The real credit for this needs to go to Kentaro Miura, as one of the main inspirations for Dark Souls and secondly due to doing what you are referring towards to a far greater standard. Honestly Berserk is so steeped in European history that it would take me at least an hour to list it all, but everything, from the philosophical concepts raised, the armour and architecture to even the systems of magic used owe their inspiration to European history and it's a credit to Miura's genius that he is capable of weaving all this together to such an extent that the majority of people believe it is internally developed. I am not poopooing the dark souls development team, but the aspects of European historical art and philosophy that they used (& dark souls isn't uniquely European inspired, the demon city is clearly a representation of Angkor Wat for instance) are but a sliver in comparison to what can be found in Berserk.

The point about the names and terminology in the game being easy to remember is interesting. When watching anime and talking with friends, it's hard to remember names all the time unless you're really into the anime, so you just end up saying something like "I like that girl with the purple hair" or something along those lines.
@sztallone4154 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's universally true that it's much harder to remember non-native words, including names. It's related to the case of nonsensible/meaningless words, because the brain doesn't store just the words itself in separate 'slots' like a spreadsheet, rather it creates association-webs with the word's all related info, and its meaning and familiarity are important. If there're no such things, then recalling the word is much harder. This works the same way on higher, text levels. It was a long time ago when I learned about this but there were a study in which people had to memorise a coherent tale, and the same amount random words thrown together, and the result was that they could only recall 15% of the random words while the story was remembered basically fully.

@bokudensuduharagmail Also, the hwacha which appear in this game wouldn't be invented for over a hundred years after the Mongol invasions, but I don't really get bogged down in details like that. This game is meant to be a kind of pastiche of premodern Japan, with Tsushima acting as a scale model of the home islands. The real Tsushima's topography is almost nothing like the environments presented in the game, but it's meant to give a broad tour of Japan's geography and seasons in a manageably small area. Hell, Khotun Khan is an invention of the developers as far as I know, and despite the references in the game to the shōgun the game takes place during a time when the shōgun had been temporarily displaced by the shikken. It's not trying to be a strict documentary, it's trying to be a love letter to a broad swath of time, place, and people, and I think it achieves that.

I'm not gonna lie, i love that this flies in to the face of those claiming that it is impossible for western finction to tell stories about other cultures without being disrepectful ("cultural appropriation" and such nonsense). Not only has this been disproven again and again, the reverse is also true: Some of the best adaption of western children/coming-of-age literature comes from Japan in form of the World Masterpiece Literature anime. Many of those have an astounding attention of details when it come to the portrayal of historical european settings, as far as I can tell as a european. (I mean it's not like I was alive in the early 20th century, so I can only compare it to our own historical movies.) Also, they often (not always) capture the spirit of the original perfectly, to the point where I would say some of these are the best adaption of the materical I know of. The only drawback I find is that they sometimes add too much filler, but even when they made stuff up it fit in it to the story nicely, it's just a bit too long.
@eagle36764 жыл бұрын
Thing is, if you respect the culture, you can make something that's not insulting. Doesn't matter what culture you're from or what culture you're writing about. Though I have to admit if Jin didn't sound like a Japanese man speaking English, it would've been strange for me and took me out of the experience a bit.
@rsmith024 жыл бұрын
That's a strawman argument. People aren't claiming you can't do it, just that it's often done lazily and badly. In the case of Japan, as a dominant country with a strong video games industry, nobody's going to claim that Japanese have been kept from telling their story so there isn't a power dynamic a play either. It's good that these ideas have so sunk in with you so that you're looking for it, even if you reflexively reject it.

4:30 this got me thinking, I think it's good that some media chooses to use average looking characters. When we look at the impact of general media and the people/characters they've used -majority are very attractive- it's set expectations for average people that are unrealistic. They see these beautiful people on the screen and think that's how it is in the world, that that's how it should be, but then they look in the mirror and wonder why they aren't so attractive, which then is destructive. Then in time entire populations struggle with it like how it is currently. But if media were to use realistic characters, it would go a long way to changing that effect, although it probably wouldn't be as profitable so idk if it'd happen.

Don't forget that Ghost of Tsushima is one of few western games to receive 40/40 from Famitsu. On a side note concerning Yuna, I feel alot of straight males have basic taste. Tbf beauty is subjective in the eyes of the beholder. But to hate her solely on that one aspect is beyond shallow. She is essential to Jin's growth as a warrior. And her values as well as loyalty are highly desirable traits. Even in game Jin has nothing but praise for her. I feel she serves way more purpose than useless "eye-candy" that gamers expect out of female characters.

It sounds like a critism of someone who likes anime girls a bit too much. That's all about the culture(s) you grow up in. I can't remember Japanese names for the life of me. Lastly, Japanese people were definitely involved in creating this game. As an Asian who lives in Europe, all I can say to those people is STFU. Anyway, Tsushima is easily my GOTY and one of my favorite games of this generation. It may have many bugs and glitches, but it's still a great experience, and it really made me feel as if I'm inside 13th century Japan. It's up there for me with Sekiro and Tenchu (OG gamers will remember that series). Also, I guess I can understand why Japanese folks call Yuna "ugly" (I disagree), since she isn't your typical "Anime waifu", just like how Jin isn't your typical "Anime husbando", but I'd say that she still looks fairly realistic with regard to the game's setting. A 13th century Japanese thief certainly wouldn't look like Ayumi Hamasaki or Aika...

Yeah, but it actually represents the 16 or 17th century Japan. Samurai didn't look like that nor didn't had swords like that in the 13th century. But I think that's all fine. They wanted the typical Samurai atmosphere from old movies. Most of these movies take place in the 16 or 17th century (edo period). The real islands topography is almost nothing like the environments presented in the game. They wanted to add the whole topography of Japan. That's fine for me too. The game doesn't have to be all accurate.

One little criticism I heard on another YT video is that the American man said that he wanted better computer code for the combat mechanics. He said he was disappointed that so much effort was put into making dozens of individual blades of grass and leaves on trees flutter in the wind but the actual sword swinging was too clumsy and imprecise for his liking.

Damn that one reviewer really going so low to complain about the female character being “ugly” that’s how you can tell the game is a 10/10

@Hersh Shorsh no, it's the facial features. There's plenty of dark haired and dark eyed characters in japanese media.
