It was really funny, when I went to MEPS. I told them I wanted to be a culinary specialist and cook on submarines. But they told me that I should consider something else. I asked what else they had available and then they gave me a job as a Nuclear Specialist. I was astonished to say the least. I ship out 20160105

I ship out 20151221 and they tried to have me go for the nuclear field. But I didn't want it and I chose AECF and I am hoping to choose FC in that field. But what I really want is aircrew. Is it possible to switch while I'm in the navy?
@dominiquestephenson1957 жыл бұрын
Michael O'Donnell -it used to be but I haven't been in since 88. It was called "striking" for a different rate. I tried but failed in 86 for two reasons. I saw the movie The Final Countdown in 84 and joined up to launch birds on the flight deck. I really wanted to be a pilot but I joined during my senior year of high school. The plan was to after a year apply to OCS (think An Officer and A Gentleman) and get my wings. My 20/20 & 20/25 vision was technically good enough for a waiver but that waiver never came in four years. By year 2, I figured out that the waiver was never coming so I wanted to be enlisted aircrew and chose AW to strike for. Anti-Submarine Warfare operators flew as aircrew on S-3A Vikings and the same rate also functioned as Aircrew Rescue Swimmers aboard SH-3 Sea King helos. Again I tried very hard to get there and had all the qualifications but it was never approved. Here's the important part. The main problem was that in choosing ABE, I had unwittingly selected a rate that was severely undermanned. Hooking up a Tomcat to the cat and tensioning it prior to launch may be exciting, dangerous and unique but it also had a reputation of being hot, greasy, dirty, with 18-21hr days and whatever sleep you can get. It was grueling work and I made the mistake of being guns-ho and doing a great job. They were never letting me go and indeed offered me an awesome re-enlistment bonus offer as an E-5. There was a certain red corvette I had my eye on but in the end I decided to pursue a flight career in the civil sector. I hope all this helps and is still relevant. It very well may not be at all. Maybe somebody still active can comment?

I was lucky that my dad was in the Navy and I'd been on a couple of his ships and saw some of the working conditions. He was an ET when he retired. I told the MEPS folks that I wanted to work in an air conditioned environment. I ended up being an ET and my speciality was calibration and repair so my work was almost exclusively indoors. It was a great job.
@dominiquestephenson1957 жыл бұрын
Yes there are many aviation jobs that are classified as "ships company" meaning you are attached to the boat, NOT a squadron. Basically these "V" divisions seperate the various built in aviation apparatus on a carrier. For example, I was assigned to V-2 Division which operates and maintains the 4 aircraft catapults and arresting gear machine's. (I was a Waist Cat, the two cats amidships port side). As a ships company "Airedale" you stay with the ship all the time. Each aircraft type has at least one squadron, many have two. When deployed they of course stay with the boat. When returning to home port the squadrons fly off to their respective home Naval Air Stations where they stay until the boat again goes to sea. Think of them like snowbirds, not the REAL Airedale's! ( just a little fun, in reality I wish I would have chosen a rate attached to a squadron. They are small, tightly knit units....like a close family. The Carrier is like Chicago on a boat. V Divisions operate and maintain some of the largest, dirtiest and most failure prone systems on the boat. They often include long hours (we would have killed for 12, or 14 hours on in V-2. We had to work 18-21hr days with whatever sack time you could get on cold tile floors in our workspaces. The jobs grueling reputation meant most unspecified airmen were sent to us to try and boost our numbers. I (like the lifelong idiot I am) actually chose ABE because I saw "The Final Countdown" and thought cats looked cool. In general you will work shorter hours, be a lot cleaner and feel like more a member of a family if you take a squadron job. Here is a list of the ships company air department. I've been out since 88 but I doubt these have changed. V-1: Aircraft Handlers (blue shirts, they control movement of manned & unmanned aircraft around the flight deck.). High risk job around aircraft, intakes, exhausts, must keep them clear of everything. Hours can be long depending of launch schedule. Overall a desirable deck job. V-2: Aircraft Catapults & Arresting Gear (green shirts, operate cats and arresting gear. Both are complex huge machines constantly experiencing huge forces and wear. Long hours, very dangerous, very hot, sticky and dirty. Deck positions are one of the most exciting enlisted jobs. V-3: Aircraft Handlers in Hanger Bay (blue & yellow shirts, same as V-1 but in the much tighter confines of the hanger bay). Big benefit is it's a climate controlled environment, often with good lighting. Desirable job. V-4: Aircraft Fuels (purple shirts or "grapes".). Exclusively handle fueling and de fueling equipment. Dangerous for obvious reasons. Dirty work down in the bowels of Carrier maintaining fuel tanks & equipment. Not desirable. V-5: Primary Flight Control (Pri-Fly) (yellow shirts, works with the Air Boss to oversee and manage all movement on deck including equipment and people. Very desirable job) Red Shirts are Aviation Ordinancemen. ( due to limited access to their spaces all I know is they can be assigned to several different ships company divisions, most associated with Weapons handling/ Master at arms, or aircraft maintenance depts. They can also be assigned to squadrons and they have a rotating schedule of ship & shore based commands. It's a demanding, dangerous job and is highly desirable. White shirts can be everything from damage control teams, VIP assist officers, quality control, landing signal officers and aircraft trouble shooters. Most are squadron jobs but a few are ships company. Brown shirts are plane captains and mechanics: the plane captain is an enlisted petty officer responsible for ensuring the aircraft is safe for flight. Mechanics (mechanical and avionics and electronics are self explanatory.) these are squadron jobs and highly desirable and technically challenging.

Dude your videos are legit and you trip me out. I'm swearing in the first week of March and was planning on picking something in aviation. What's the rate for yellow shirts and so on like the blue, green, purple etc.
@jtmnavy9 жыл бұрын
yellow shirts are ABH's and direct the aircraft on the flight deck, there are also blue shirts, which are basically unqualified yellow shirts. They drive the tow tractors around and help out the yellow shirts. The purple shirts are called "fuelies" and they are in charge of fueling all the aircraft on the flight deck. The green shirts are aviation maintenance. They are your "squadron" guys. IF you want to be a "shooter" and be the guys standing right next to the jets launching them off, those are the white shirts and called shoooters

Hey JTsuits. I'm 20 years old and I've been preparing myself for the Navy physically and mentally for the past 3 months. I want to build myself before I even talk to a recruiter. I know full heatedly that I want to go into Navy but I'm having a hard time deciding what I should do or figuring out what's even available to my interests. My mission in life is to help people but i would also like to see the world. I've thought about it for a while and thought becoming an AIRR fits my needs. I just have a few questions though like if that job is too farfetched, if it's not available then what other jobs pertain to me or pretty much any info you (or anybody) could throw my way would be much appreciated!

The saying “The grass is always greener on the other side” is so true. As there is a reason why the YN’s had a jacket on in the summer.... it’s freezing cold inside. YN’s over PS or LS have to deal directly with the 0’s (E7 and above - upper chain of command) and their many personalities, and must always be courteous even when these khakis are absolutely wrong. Unbeknownst to most, the YN1 runs the show, he/she is the go to person they all seek when the khakis need something done. Speaking as someone who’s Navy career spanned three decades, once an enlistedman makes E7 and above, their camaraderie with those they supervise is practically gone, as well as the work they produce. In my experience (three decades) there were only a hand full of E7 and above that were worth anything, as most stopped learning and producing as their only goal was to make E8/9. The few khakis that did, they were simply OUTSTANDING and highly respected by all they encountered. AND for those sailors who sought my guidance and counsel, many thanks, as I too was also a worker, that never lost sight of where I came from, no matter what rank I held..... the sailor always comes first. ⚓️

PACT Seaman is shit for one reason: You don't have a rate on your contract. This means that, while you can 'try out' other rates, the Navy will put you where it needs you. So basically, you're gonna be somewhere in the bowels of the ship, doing plumbing, or painting the ship every day. And that's not just the bullshit you do on the side while you're doing your main thing as an ABH or QM, that-is-your-job, you don't move on from it. You get paid for it, but you're gonna hate it. Study for the ASVAB (I hadn't done shit in math or anything for six years before I took it at age 22, and after a single weekend spent studying four hours a night, I went from a 45 on my practice test to a 68, just fucking study), be patient, and get a rate you want. I waited three months in limbo before my recruiter finally scored me a CTR seat. Read. About. The. Rates. Go to Military.com, not the Navy site, because Military.com will actually tell you what you do. Except for CT rates because that shit is super secret or whatever. Find the rate cards, just look them up. Think ahead. What job will give you a career, or the ability to start a career, after your 4 years.

Using up all my gigs watchin your videos! Lol very sweet personality. I ship out Dec 21 and Im ABH I cant find shit about my rate! Like I saw a few things but mostly negative :( can you tell me more about that rate? Will I be on a squadron or carrier? Also I have a daughter that will be with me, did u know any moms in your work,crew? Also do they work a day shift? And I want to be on the west coast but cant really get a direct answer about that
@jtmnavy9 жыл бұрын
BlackHippie I worked and knew a lot of ABH's on the Lincoln and George Washington. They were always a really hard working group of guys/girls. If you want more info on the rate they are also called Yellow Shirts. Before you can become a Yellow shirt and direct aircraft on the flight deck, you are what is called a "Blue Shirt." Blue shirts are basically the trainee's. As you blue shirt you will be driving the tow tractors around the flight deck, and helping hook them up to the f-18's and other jets with what is called a tow bar. Its a really fun and exciting job, you'll also be around the flight deck boss and other higher ups on the ship so you'll get a lot of visibility and chances to look good. You'll definitely be on a carrier,,, like 90% sure. I didn't know a lot of moms but I know there is really good daycares on base ect.. For your shifts, its going to depend on where they need you, could be night check , could be day check..... and you won't really get to pick orders, its pretty much needs of the navy right now, unless you score really really high in your A school, then you might get to do a "dream sheet"
@StingM3Naptural9 жыл бұрын
JTsuits thank you so much for answering so quickly😘 ok so yellow shirts , I look that up. How do you rank up in aviation , is it tests?

everybody advances in the navy the same , you will have an advancement exam twice a year and have evaluations also twice a year to determine your overall performance and that will determine if you will advance, but that docent happened until after you make E-3 , because you make ranks e-2 and e-3 automatically.

Hey what's up bro, I'm in in the process of joining e navy reserve, but I stuck on what job to get. My goal is to be come a police officer or something the law enforcement field. I want the MAA job but should I pick a job that's going to give me another skill or stick to what I want in the future ?
@RxninXIII8 жыл бұрын
I wanted something a little more exciting, but no one really broke down the contracts for me. whoever issued the rates seemed to really be pushing the yeoman position. He guranteed school for yeoman, he couldn't do the same for the other positions.

Is the post 9/11 gi bill an entitlement by law or does it have to be in your enlistment contract??
@jtmnavy9 жыл бұрын
Andre Jenkinss it's a benefit you receive after completing your contract active duty , if you go reserves its a little different
@andrejenkinss71929 жыл бұрын
So after? I cant use it while I'm in active duty? Basically I'm trying to bust my ass and complete my degree online during my enlistment contract...and so I am clear its not something I need in my contract? Because I dont want to get to meps and be all demanding to get it in my contract looking stupid or screw my chances of getting in lol....thank you for your videos and your time by the way..really helped my decision to join...if you can stay that cool after being in..made me feel comfortable as to what it would mean for me..thanks bro
@jtmnavy9 жыл бұрын
look up Tuition assistance , thats what you will use when active duty , you use your gi bill when you get out

Are you biased towards jobs in Naval Aviation in your recommendations? How about the jobs that make the ship go places, instead of being tied to the pier?
@SpicyTamale7 жыл бұрын
ok some army recruiters told me that you can't choose your job in the Navy 💀? I was like nahhh that ain't true & they were like "yea we're the only branch in the military who let's you pick your own job!" they told me all this when I took the asvab practice test with them, I told them I can't choose between navy & army.
@BeeboTheBoops8 жыл бұрын
ok shoot. You won't get your hard copy orders to tell you FC or ET until you are leaving boot camp and that's just because it hasn't been decided until like the last week of boot camp.

When your enlistment ended, did a senior enlisted or even officer take you aside and try to get you to reenlist? Did they offer any incentives to reenlist such as bonus or choice of station? Did you fill out a survey on why you were not going to reenlist? My LPO talked to me for five minutes on reenlisting thats it!

@bahamankris8 жыл бұрын
+Adrian Aldape Corpsman hands down. Trust me. The only rates in the navy that anyone should try and get are: CTN, Corpsman, IT, and the rates that have to do with writing articles etc. These rates have high quality of life and are usually shore duty. Trust me man, DO IT.

@jtmnavy9 жыл бұрын
A school for AM .... pretty easy , i didnt know shit about anything , even about using tools, and I did fine. It is almost impossible to fail A school and C school ,,, like when i say impossible, you'll literally have to try to fail, like in my 5 years in the navy, I heard maybe like only 1 or 2 people that didn't pass A school, and I think even if you fail, they just set you back and you do the training over >,< Daily routine for an AM ........... umm , get ready to work your ass off where ever you go, its a hard , but rewarding rate, and we always have the most fun :P

I know this is one of your older videos but can you elaborate on being on a carrier? I will be a yellow shirt and also after a school will I be able to get an apartment before,I start duty? Im married and have a daughter, Im not sure if the husband is coming (its complicated) but my daughter is. also do you know typically what an abh work hours are? and I see where u said its a hazardous rate..kinda freaked out about that bc Im only 4'11..and when u said "always on a ship" do u mean just workin on a ship that's in port?
@jtmnavy9 жыл бұрын
BlackHippie watch my video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJyoaICcnNidedWd talk about working on the flight deck. After your school and after you get to your first ship, you should be able to move out in town and get in apartment for your family. And abh's are mostly always on a ship because your rate is all about directing aircraft
@jtmnavy9 жыл бұрын
BlackHippie i also have a couple of videos about being on a carrier so check those out also !

Im joining the navy reserves, while attending community college, I've thought long and hard about the job, and ive come to a conclusion of being a navy corpsman. I have some ideas of why, because my mother was in a coma during some of my childhood and was partially paralyzed, so I had to be kinda like her nurse in and out of the hospital, and I was thinking of being a fireman, but that could be my job while in reserve, when I fully join, corpsman. Idk if thats a good idea or not,if you have any opinions or d Suggestions, I'd be happy to be inform by it. P.s, try puckering as you blow
@jtmnavy9 жыл бұрын
Devon Daniels sounds like you'd be a good fit for corpsman. Just make sure u prepare for the asvab because youll need a higher than average asvab score

Dude it doesn't work that way, well at least for me it didnt. My recruiter told me that whatever jobs they have available at MEPS that I would have to choose one of those. I got a 56 and qualified for mineman, information systems technician, yoleman, and some job on the subs. o picked IT though.
@jtmnavy8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Barrios what do you mean "it dosent work like that?" what are you referring to exactly
@ShmokeNaPancake8 жыл бұрын
+JTsuits what I'm referring to is about the Job Description. Here in El Paso, TX at the MEPS center it's whatever jobs that are open to you, you can choose when you get a score of a 50 or higher. It necessarily doesn't work in that sense of way that you said it in the video, but it does give you options like how I got. Here in El Paso the minimum requirement to get in the Navy is a 35 and that would qualify you as undesignated. Although recruiters here wouldn't put you in with that 35.
@ShmokeNaPancake8 жыл бұрын
+JTsuits vids are very helpful tho. Liked that review on the book camp video. it was tight.
@jtmnavy8 жыл бұрын
ahh i gotch you .... yeah maybe its different down there for yall ,,,,, but when i went through in 2010 they said I can go back home and pick a job when it comes up if I don't want what they offer at that moment ,,maybe now that the navy is really overmanned they aren't lettin u do that anymore ,,, but yeah man thanks for watchin and commenting ! good luck with IT
@ShmokeNaPancake8 жыл бұрын
+JTsuits Thanks bro really appreciate that. Yeah that's exactly what they told me. They want more women in the Navy and they allow them to have scores under a 50. I mean don't get me wrong I wouldn't mind some babe's on the ship, but i would rather have the best person qualified for the job than a person that's under qualified you know what I mean.

I'm not the best with desk jobs and lots of papers but I do like working with my hands and being out in the weather getting dirty so I was thinking that aviation would be the best for me. Also do you always get the adrenaline on the flight deck that you would like say your first time on it, or does it go away?
