Yeah, its amazing. I just hate that a load of fucking boomers had no idea that it was a cover. Johnny Cash was a legend and always stuck up for younger upcoming generations of musicians, even during the 80s when the whole Satanic Panic shit was going off, him doing a NIN cover was a statement of solidarity as much as anything, it annoys me that there seems to be a fair portion of people who think of themselves as his fans but don't get the intent there.

Finn just completely overlooks and shit talks ska. Idk how you can think Disturbed's cover of "Sound of Silence" is good and then tear into a perfectly good cover. Every time ska is mentioned, he always uses it as an opportunity to put it down and trivialize it. Ska was a big stepping stone for me and so many others to other kinds of music and Finn never acknowledges it. It's bullshit. He never even talks about bands like Streetlight or Arrogant Sons of Bitches that were not just some goofy ska bands. They had good lyrics and really sweet melodies. But Finn will always overlook this type of music and act like everything is better than it.
@Scrinwaipwr2 жыл бұрын
@@JarmaRooMcDoo I had a brief exchange with him about this and basically he has been given a bad impression by a lot of ska *fans* - it's got next to nothing to do with the actual music. I said something along the lines of it is better to no to let other people ruin things for you and like or dislike things for what they are, not for who else likes/dislikes it. He acknowledged that as a good point but I guess it wasn't good enough for him to change his perspective. Unless he *does* like ska at least somewhat but likes winding up ska fans even more, which probably has at least some truth to it. It gets people commenting at the very least and he does work at the mercy of that algorithm.
@JarmaRooMcDoo2 жыл бұрын
@@Scrinwaipwr i just don't understand how he goes into all these subgenres in great depth and just is so shallow with ska stuff. It's pretentious and disingenuous. If he made something positive with regard to ska, wouldn't it feed the algorithm in the same way? Makes me just not want to watch his videos anymore.
@Scrinwaipwr2 жыл бұрын
@@JarmaRooMcDoo aye, being positive about ska could be better algorithmically. But it antagonising at least somebody is a proven method. My take is that someone with (or at least willing to portray themselves as if with) such a wholly dismissive attitude towards a genre has only invalid opinions on said genre. So yeah, while he continues to approaches it with such silliness and shallowness, Finn has no valid opinions on ska to me. He slags ska off and I shrug it off as "well you like to wind up the ska fans so you *would* say that." I might express a disagreement in the comments but I'm not going to get upset because that would be daft - and perhaps encourage the dismissiveness.

@William Sussman. Growing up in School during the mid to late 00’s and early 2010’s was also like that. But I didn’t get into music until I left College when I was 19 back in the mid 2010’s. I just couldn’t find a sound that I liked, until I was discovering Nu-Metal on KZbin and I finally found my sound. But growing up in School in the late 00’s and early 2010’s, you were either a 2000’s and early 10’s Rap fan, a Emo/Pop Punk fan, or a 2000’s and early 10’s PoP/R&B/Top 40 fan. And I hated all of that. I finally found my sound when I was 19 listening to Nu-Metal/Alt Metal but I’ve since branched out and like some Symphonic Metal and a like Trip Hop as well But I also don’t get those that listen to everything, I find that strange.

The thing with the Puddle of Mudd's Nirvana cover was the fact that they've done it very well in the past. Either Wes was having a bad day or, more likely, he's somewhat having trouble accepting he's ruined his higher range, hence why he tends to go lower on Blurry nowadays. Also, good god, that Korn cover of One sounds hype as fuck. Children of Bodom actually did a LOT of covers, believe they did like one per album, plus bonus tracks. The cover compilation Skeletons In The Closet is probably the best way to hear them all

2001. Ahh to be in High School again. My best friend lived down the street from Mike Cosgrove and we would walk down the street and watch them practice in his garage, when they were just a local garage band, back in like 98-99. Then in 2000 they started touring with Papa Roach. When Anthology came out they would come to our local Shakeys pizza place and hang out during Karaoke night, they even brought their tour bus one time.

16:15 I think a big part of the reason 80’s and 90’s subgrenres were more restrictive and cross pollinated less is simply due to the technology. Back then if you wanted to get into an obscure genre you needed to invest a lot more time, effort and money to acquire albums. Being into everything wasn’t really feasible for a lot of people so they picked a few genres and dove into those more exclusively. Plus with the limited communication it wouldn’t surprise me if some of the more underground subgrenres were barely even aware of each others existence. Enter the internet age and all of a sudden the only thing separating you from checking out a new genre was trying to find a good torrent or download. Then KZbin and digital distribution came along and really broke it open.

@ Finn: You made me smile when you described Children of Bodom as a serious metal band. Anyway, they always released cover versions. In the beginning, they took the usual suspects like Slayer or Scorpions. But later on, they covered songs by Creedance Clearwater Revival, Pat Banetar, Andrew W.K., Kenny Rogers and even Poison. And I do think that it´s always better if you take a song from another genre. I mean, how many metal bands released covers of "Angel of Death" that sound like the original? Killswitch had the advantage of every single member of the band being extremely talented in their genre. I personally think Howard is vastly superior to Jesse but even he is pretty great. Plus Ronnie James Dio was such a talented singer that only someone as good as Howard could cover him successfully. And I think they also incorporated the metalcore riffs and the screams successfully without it just sounding like “Our Last Night- Holy Diver (metal cover)” or something
@princealigorna74682 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it works surprisingly well. Going back to that Dio tribute album though, Rob Halford's take on "Man on the Silver Mountain" sucked. I was so disappointed. I think he intentionally held back because he and Ronnie respected the hell out of each other and he didn't want to step on Ronnie by oversinging. But I think that's what everyone wanted! We wanted Halford to pay respect to Ronnie by going full Halford! Just like if it were the other way around, we'd want Ronnie to pay respects to Halford by going full Ronnie! Most of that album is fantastic though. Anthrax, Tenacious D, Metallica, Doro, Biff Byford and Lemmy, Klaus Meine, Corey Taylor, Lzzy Hale, and Glenn Hughes especially put in fantastic takes

Howard Jones is a better metal vocalist, but Jesse is a better hardcore/heavier vocalist. I think their cover of Land of Confusion is so much better. To me, they captured the whole vibe of the original, but in a more metal package. @neek11262 жыл бұрын
For me, it's not that I can't stand the cover so much as I can't stand how much people absolutely gush over it. People acted like Draiman is the most versatile vocalist the world has ever seen because he can go from singing soft to doing his nu-metal yelling. It's just hard for me to echo that praise when I can think of like 20 metalcore vocalists that can do the same thing, but they get swept under the rug because people think screaming is scary.

On the topic of the Garage Days covers: School of Rock using Metallica’s cover of the Wait by Killing Joke had a huge impact on me in the long run. The opening two note riff, the chugging and Lars’ caveman drumming just enhance that song to another level energy wise.

Nevermore also covered The Sound of Silence on their album Dead Heart in a Dead World which came out in 2000. I’m not a huge fan of the band although they are very talented, but the cover is amazing. It’s a great example of a band taking a song and making it their own. They start the song off with the original riff but all the music after that is completely different. Disturbed cover is damn good. Yes there is a huge difference between original and cover, but to ME the AGGRESSIVE tone in the disturbed cover fits. I Prevail and A Day To Rememebr honestly to me have the BIGGEST influences on my life. Especially A Day To Remember, when I lost my best friend in a motorcycle accident, they were a band we jammed the fuck out to on some bad days we had. Those were days where we drove around in our cars and just BLARED and sung the best we absolutely could. Kill switch with Holy Diver, when that first came out I honestly didn’t know Holy Diver was originally done by Dio, but I choose Killswitch because I like them and their tone more. I discovered I Prevail when they released the cover but ever since then I’ve been hooked, and this turned out to be one of my absolute favorite bands. ISMFOF and TDWP were the good ole days lol. Scene days huh? The golden days I call them lmao But if anyone really wants some DAMN good covers, look up Fame On Fire, if you’re into the "punk goes pop" or "heavy" if you dig it. A Day To Remember - Since U Been Gone.

Machine Head’s cover of “Battery” is amazing… as is their cover of “Hallowed Be Thy Name”. And Throwdown’s cover of “Baby Got Back” is classic.

There's no reason to listen to the Battery cover over the original though.. I'm not saying it's bad, but it definitely isn't superior which basically makes it pointless since its pretty much identical to the original. The only Metallica cover I think is superior to the original is Bullet For My Valentine's version of Welcome Home.

@@Joshua_Froschauer yes, it’s definitely a good version. Never been huge into CoF but they still got a cool sound.

I think "making it your own" is critical when it comes to cover longevity

I agree that it is hard to cover Linkin Park. Memphis May Fire covered Faint and every time it pops up on Spotify it makes want to listen to the original. Also the band Blind Witness covered Backstreets Back and it is amazing! Check it out!

Also, the Puddle of Mudd cover was actually GOOD...if you listen to the live version they did years prior to that.
