When & if you decide to re-watch at some point pay attention to how Lee takes photos. She times her photos between cover when she has cover fire while at the same time Jessie has the tendancy to try to take pictures while actively being shot at! Probably at least a dozen times throughout the movie she gets pulled back & saved by someone. Truly a great film. I do enjoy the decision to not fully explain why this civil war is happening. Garland really wanted to show the audience that this is a beautiful nation that can easily be death around a corner. I can't remember if it was in your reaction but I love Lee's monologue about how every picture was a warning back home. Do we truly want this? Look at this gorgeous landscape. Do we truly want this?

I was already feeling anxiety during the riot/bombing scene at the beginning and it didn’t let up the entire movie.

@@FlixTalkI don’t know if it’s your camera lighting but it looked like when Lee was shot and killed at the end, your face seemed to pale like all the blood went out of your face.

Jesse Plemons is incredible at being a Jackass in movies.(even when it's not for an entire movie or most of a movie) A great bad guy or bully.(Like Mike as an example)

As for the towns staying safe because their people are guarding them, it's similar to what happened in areas of Chicago after MLK was killed. There was a gang, who through extortion (of course), provided protection for local businesses. They did have the rationale right - "looting and vandalizing your neighborhood makes no sense."

I haven't seen this, but having now seen it through your eyes, it looks like a 3/5. It also looks like the screenwriter was caught in a trap: they apparently didn't want to define the war, probably because if they did, they would have alienated half the audience. But this isn't like Rick waking up in The Walking Dead: these characters have lived through everything before the movie opens, so they know what's going on, but again, choose not to tell you. Which would have pissed me off, I think. From your reaction, Jesse Plemons might rate a Best Supporting Actor nod for this. He's only in it for seven minutes, but Beatrice Straight and Judi Dench went on to win Oscars for roles that small, or smaller.

React to the film: CRAWL (2019), the best killer animal horror of recent years, it has tense and brutal moments.

As for unsettling scenes - "The Last House on The Left" and "I Spit On Your Grave" (and the two sequels) - do NOT watch them. Made me want to take an industrial shower with Ajax and a Brillo pad.

Isn’t it all the more horrifying to see your nation as war photographers experience and depict other nations? The spilling the movie is it shows you the chaos and senselessness in the US with as much detachment as we see in Gaza or South Sudan or Yemen. I think as a British person I don’t recoil as much as US audiences do. US audiences have to know why or how but to an outsiders eye you’re just another war zone. Thats the challenge this film sets down to viewers - esp Americans - are you ready not to be the heroes of a drama but just fodder for the news cycle?

I would like to think this is how the Purge Series Ends. That this President was one of those New Founding Fathers....I know Purge Forever kind of ruined that but I also consider Purger forever a Desperate Grab at trying to prolong the Franchise as long as they can.

First, as a TEXAN, there's NO WAY WE would do anything with California. With that said, I respect that the director did it that way so there was no political bias.

Also, as a Texan, there’s always a way …. If Texas can vote for an orange con man with a hard on for Dictators, then it’s not far fetched to believe they team up with their rivals to overthrow an actual dictator… Don’t be so ignorant lol

I imagine the President in this movie will have had to just bugger up THAT badly that Texas & California thought, "Yeah, we hate him more..."

I’m a Texan also. For the purpose of the scenario in this film, you have to put aside the the differing politics of both states. They’re not allied for politics, they’re allied for their substantial financial, material, and military resources. It does make sense for a potential alliance to combine the might of their collective resources to depose something as tyrannical as a an unconstitutional third term Presidential administration. Moreover, the film is nothing to do with the stupid tribalism and politics behind the war. The war just serves as a backdrop over which the story of the journalists can be told. The title could have just as easily been “The Journalists,” but that’s not very compelling or provocative enough to get butts in seats in the theater. Also, this movie needs to be experienced in the theater. It’s okay streaming at home, but the sound design hits much harder in the theater. The most realistic sounding gunfire I’ve ever heard. You could see people jumping in their seats in a few scenes with sudden gunfire, myself included (lifelong gun owner and retired military veteran). It sounded like gunfire inside the theater. It’s not the most realistic premise, but I understand what the filmmaker was going for.

Some zombie movies focus on the zombie outbreak and society collapsing. Other zombie movies focus on what people are doing during the zombie apocalypse. I think this movie is like that but in depicting a civil war in the US. The how and why aren't important. I think this is underlined by the President's last words. Don't let them kill me. This was not a great battle of ideology, this was one guy and his supporters trying to seize power. That's why at the end he had nothing meaningful to say. In some ways it mirrors Nazi Germany. Hitler's desire for power and the actions he took resulted in the German people ultimately suffering brutal revenge, especially from the Russians. In this movie the President's power grab results in destruction and death for his supporters as well as for other people, with nothing to show for it at the end.

Just sucks they don’t delve into the war itself. Like how they’re fighting or with what? Don’t show how the battles are going or anything?

None of this is as interesting or believable as what is happening in real life. A modern American civil war is fought with intelligence agencies, not secessionist armies. Now we have an "assassination" attempt where the shooter was a member of the same party as the "target" and found without a sniper rifle, but an assault rifle. The Secret Service are claiming that they were told to stay away from the location of the shooter before the attempt. This looks like the shooter was staging an assassination attempt by merely shooting into the crowd of spectators and didn't have any intention of hitting the "target".
