They're semi-legal in where they are established. "Utah: Balisongs or Butterfly knives are legal as long as they aren’t covered or concealed." Thing is, laws are wonderfully vague. What exactly do they mean by "covered or concealed"? Not allowed to be stuffed in your pocket or pants? I reckon it may mean that and what's the point of a butterfly knife if you can only have one when it's dangling out of your pockets or pants.

If viewing knives as tools there are many reasons to carry. Many knives (especially traditional knives) were designed for specific tasks. I carry a mutitool when working and a folding pocket knife when not working. While many days may pass that i never use the pocket knife the times I do need it I am glad to have it. I also grew up with everyone carrying pocket knives or wearing knives on their belts but they were used for working, camping, fishing, etc.
