A recent music video by a female K-pop group called "Six Bomb" caused a lot of controversy in the Western media:
• [MV]식스밤 Sixbomb "예뻐지는...
So we hit the streets of Seoul, South Korea, and asked ordinary Koreans what they thought about this incident. See what they had to say about plastic surgery in Korea and the Korean beauty standard.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general South Korean population.

I am not even korean, but after getting into kpop / kdrama, i have actualy started paying more attention to how i look, the condition of my skin, the clothes i wear, etc. Initially, i did not realise it( first 2 years.) one day while i was doing the oil cleanse, i started thinking if i would be doing this if i never got into korean culture? obviously, i try not to get affected by the beauty standard of any kind, (no one should) but some things do get stuck in your head. The media is indeed a very powerful brain washing tool.

hold up This happened to me too. I started taking better care of my skin after getting into Kdrama and starting to learn the language. I don't see anything wrong with improved grooming habits. And to be completely honest, I don't think there is anything wrong with taking care of yourself as a result of watching people that take care of themselves. For me, the problem starts when people try to change/alter their features to conform to a certain standard of beauty because society has made them feel like their God given looks/features are not good enough. That's when things go overboard. No one else should make you feel like the face/body you were born with is inferior because it doesn't look like theirs or their idea of beauty. I just want everyone one to know that they are their own standard of beauty and being the best version of themselves is so much more valuable that trying to look like someone else. Oh gosh 🙈didn't mean to write this much. 😔

Because of beauty standards and the need to be loved by others. Everybody keeps saying that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...but beauty is very objective and influenced by media.

You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned an "arbitrary beauty standard". I think plastic surgery is a personal choice but the question is who is deciding what is considered beautiful? For instance why do many Koreans think they have to get double eyelid surgery? Who decided that was more beautiful? If an inherent trait of any race has to be erased in order for someone to be considered to be attractive - then that is truly sad.
@critz6719
@critz6719 7 жыл бұрын
Awhol LOtta Whopass I mean that people would naturally find it attractive even without media brainwashing people since big eyes makes someone look young, cute and innocent. Looking young is considered a good thing & it's desirable. Double eyelid just makes eyes look big compare to monolid eyes.
@tammyg2729
@tammyg2729 7 жыл бұрын
Yonji Lim unfortunately you are right, and I find it so sad that something that's an inherent and beautiful part of being Korean like mono lids, as an example, is being "erased" simply because someone has been influenced to believe it is not attractive. I'm sure that's not always the reason someone opts for plastic surgery but it is probably one of the more common things that play into it. I'm half Asian - predominately Korean and grew up wishing my eyes looked more "Asian" because I thought that would be prettier. I guess we are all influenced to some degree into thinking that what someone else has is better than what we have...human nature I suppose.

AyAReI00 generally they prefer double eyelid but sometimes they like monolid. The only time they like monolid is if it's a handsome guy with monolid(if he has nice nose, jawline and other features & it goes well with his monolid), they rarely think a girl with monolid is pretty(even if she has beautiful nose, lips and jaw. the standard of beauty for men & women is different) and/or if the monolid eyes is big, because those exist where a person has no double eyelid but their monolid eyes are still big. Asians think those eyes are also pretty so there is some exception but generally double eyelid > monolid.

I think it's quite sad that most of them are aware of the social pressures to conform but can do nothing but to accept it. Imagine being rejected for a job that you're qualified for just because your looks aren't up to par, what a loss of potential that would be. This whole culture of lookism in Asia needs a replacement by something spiritual instead of promoting superficiality that turn their faces beautiful but their souls grotesque.

They like to undermine every single part of Korean culture because they're cool and live overseas. They often misunderstand Korean culture because they've never experienced it and are quick to criticize with their eurocentric lens. People only see Korea through pop culture, that's the main issue.

I think that if you feel plastic surgery is what you want to do, that is great. No one should criticise you for making that choice, but I think it is completely fair for someone to question or criticise what it is in society that may have brought someone to either questioning their looks on a personal level, or questioning if their looks are enough to get them far in an industry where looks shouldn't be important. I'm glad I live in a society that doesn't have that pressure put on me. I feel plastic surgery should only ever be a personal choice. When it comes to doing it to improve job prospects, it shows companies are putting beauty above actual talent and skill in the workplace. It completely goes against those that actually wouldn't want to have plastic surgery. That choice they make could be the difference between living on minimum wage, and living a comfortable life. That's not right in my opinion. I think that if some countries like Korea didn't have the competitive and rigorous education system that it does have, where everyone ends up having similar skills and qualifications, then this might not even be a thing. They've passed the point of requiring those with the correct skill, and now want to create a utopia of homogeneous beauty based on only one type of ideal.

Appearance is an asset if one sees it as one. The root of the problem is not the values of materialism (such is the physical world we live), but rather like you said, the homogeneity. Having nearly the exact same skills and qualifications. The same old resume format. The same old university application letter. The same old career goals. The same old beauty standards. The same old family values. You'd wonder why everyone is so competitive about nearly everything in life.. With the acknowledgement of this extreme sense of homogeneity, the plastic surgery phenomenon is totally understandable, at least for me. I see it as a dystopian phenomenon. But it is not so much the root of dystopia since homogeneity is a part of the Korean identity and can be generally interpreted as a strength in its own right. But with strengths comes with weaknesses.

Figureight No one would put themselves under the knife for aesthetic reasons unless affected by society standards and media pressure at a level!! So at any circumstance, even if appeared as a "personal choice", society and media is at question. The problem with S. Korea that the society and media are more pressuring than others. Because of the materialistic, superficial and competitive mentality that manifest the society, it created a standard. And this standard is being promoted by media and entertainment industry. It's a non ending ugly cycle.

Beauty Standards can be really annoying sometimes. For me as a biracial Korean I sometimes have struggled with feeling the need to look a certain way because I want to be accepted. There's expectations for all us 혼혈 (Mixed Koreans) to all be "attractive looking" or the "perfect blend of eastern and western." And at the same time there's Western beauty standards that are the exact opposite of Korean. If I dilligently follow Korean beauty trends more people accuse me of denying my other culture or saying I'm losing my "americanness." If I keep up with Western standards I'm the foreign girl that speaks Korean. It's tough when people try to define you or when the media defines what makes someone beautiful. It's something everyone has dealt with at some point in their life. At the end of the day I think it's most important to do what makes you happy. Don't let the media make you feel like you need to look a certain way or else no one will ever find you attractive. There's so much more to beauty than physical appearance. Learn to love yourself and then others can love you. 💕

+H B Americans don't nearly pay as much attention to mixed Asian people as South Koreans do. In fact it is more than likely for an American to see an Asian person as better-looking than a mixed person, and the reason is because race usually doesn't play a part in American standard of beauty. Everyone already knows Asians tend to be misrepresented in the US in comparison to white people, anyway. Mixed white-Asians are usually a safe bet to fitting in Korean beauty standards. Even if they don't look too appealing from the start, their appearance can easily be enhanced with the use of Korean makeup to look like they belong to Korean standards.

So people inevitably get surgery. It's just my thought.

쏭지 I was told similar things by other Koreans I met and also that there usually is a lot of social pressure on people which makes them do all kinds of things to get a job. That sort of social pressure is probably the worst factor and that everyone is kind of aware of it but at the same time submits to it. I still don't believe that so many Koreans get plastic surgery. But since I don't live there I can't know for sure . . .

Yes i do agree a part in your opinion but the thing is,in korea, the society is giving you a "beauty standard" in order to tell you that you are beautiful. Yes, I dont disagree with people getting their faces done but having the reason of doing that because there is a standard to comply is just so wrong...everyone is beautiful an unique in their own way. If being beautiful means having those typical WHITE WESTERN LOOK than wouldn't the earth be so dull and boring?

I'm not against plastic surgery, but I think it's kind of sad to have a "plastic surgery culture" in a country. I think that it's okay to have PS when you have really big insecurities or if there is a Physiognomy problem, but it shouldn't be something automatic. Plastic surgery is an important change, it's a really big decisions, you're changing something that you had since you're born forever. I don't think that it should be unmarked like this. Furthermore, for me a lot of koreans features are beautiful like the monolid or the shape of the face. I think that sometimes we have to accept how we look and not conform to a beauty standard, your appearance makes you unique and it's your legacy. We should be pride of what we are given and how we look, the world will be so bland if everyone looks the same.

I find the fact that we live in a world who's revolving around beauty standards pretty sad. I feel like people have to meet up some expectations set by the media or the society, which are purely artificial. For example, regarding the monolid/doublelid thing, I think the monolid is extremely beautiful and an unique trait of your race. As a foreigner I noticed that most of girls's faces (kpop stars) have really similar features. We'll end up "wearing" the same face. How can we express ourselves if we all look the same... Anyways, this is, in my opinion, a problem of our society. Thank you for the video and I did not mean to bash anyone who had plastic surgery, I believe this is everybody's choice, I just stated my opinion.

The skin colour, the hair, the eyes, or so it seems to me. I see kpop stars changing their look quite frequently. They dye their hair, put on contact lenses, undergo doublelid operation etc and achieve a look that is different from the traditional asian people and this is what I find odd.

But they also said that the oversea's people are overeacting about plastic surgery, but actually in Korea it's kind normal. In other countrys plastic surgery is unusual, even with TV stars it doesn't sound really normal. It's not about insecurity. It's more about securing a better position, being ahead of others in the competitive society. To give you another example, there even is a huge private tutoring market for pre-school students where they finish off elementary & middle school academic courses in a year. Asian societies are way more competitive than western ones. So it's hard for a lot of westerners to understand it. But it definitely is something that needs to disappear some time later.

Although getting ps is a thing everywhere, getting plastic surgery on your face is a much bigger deal than for example your but, why? Because your face is unique, that's what people most see that define you. Your body parts are mostly covered always but your face is always shown, you look at the mirror and what do you see? Your face, because that's you. I think it's a personal decision whether or not to get ps, but you shouldn't have to change yourself in a unnatural way in order to survive (get a job), also getting a ps on your face is kind of in a way changing your identity and who you are

So sad. I remember when I was in South Korea (3 years ago), Gangnam had a whole street filled with plastic surgery clinics. Anywhere you walked there'd be before and after advertisements on boards. Heck the subway is filled with plastic surgery/beauty makeup ads. South Korea feeds off its citizens insecurities that's why these people don't take it as a big deal because getting plastic surgery is like going for a facial to them. & most people give up and get plastic surgery done because they know it's less likely for them to get in a good job without looking good. ( In South Korea you HAVE TO attach a photo of your face on your resume). Yes, plastic surgery happens in other countries but not to this extent.South Korea's super high standards (work, school, beauty, etc) are why their Suicide rates are ridiculously high.

i think it's better to stay natural and i think that doing a plastic surgery would be good only for someone who has a real problem with his face like if people look at him in a wierd way or something if that thing is really making this person not at ease then making a plastic surgery can fix that and can make the person feel better about himself and feel more acceptable in his surround.

That girl from 5:35 mark nailed it. Korean entertainment industry is so big right now, that people just look at these pretty/good looking celebrities on tv and mags everyday, that they have set ridiculously high expectations/standards Hence, more people are getting plastic surgeries to look more like those celebs. Until the 90s, plastic surgeries weren't so common in Korea and it used to be frowned upon. But I think this one particular celebrity came out in early 2000s and admitted she had some procedures done, after that the taboo/shame associated with plastic surgeries have disappeared from Korea. I know for a fact that a lot of other ppl in other Asian countries (like China, Taiwan and Japan etc) get procedures done too, but they don't talk about it at all.

To those who says that PS is common in other countries as well, please rethink your statement. Yes, it is common in other countries among CELEBRITIES, ARTISTS, and not ORDINARY people. In my country there are absolutely no high schoolers (let alone those in middle school) that get PS. PS among ordinary people is almost 0. Idk any family members, friends, whatsoever that does PS. Hell, it's not even something that people talk about. It's insane and ridiculous. Those who have gotten into major injuries and accidents are the only ones that are considered acceptable to go under the knife (for repairing and the sake of their own health, but it is never because they want to look 'prettier' and 'more handsome'). And I don't know about you, but I think for those who says 'Let them do what they want, it's their life, it's their choice,' etc. Isn't that the same as saying let this person become overweight even with a high risk of obesity and diabetes in their life? It's toxic and there's nothing right about that. We're human beings and every one of us is different. We ARE MEANT to look different, have DIFFERENT body shapes, and DIFFERENT skin tones. We're not manufactured goods that should be altering God's creation and thinking it's okay just because a lot of people do it, it's the beauty standard, and the society puts pressure on it. Let's just cast our ego aside and see what is truly right for humankind and future generations. (I know this sounds dramatic but seriously though)

It is a global problem but I feel like it's worse in Korea. In America, we have a lot more people who speak up for individuality and who say you don't have to conform to certain beauty standards. I don't know as much about Korean culture since I only follow k-pop, but whenever I watch a Korean program they always talk about how important beauty is. I rarely see a Korean program where someone says it's inner beauty that matters more. I feel that in the West, there are more people who are comfortable being non-conformist and challenging beauty standards, but in Korea most people just try to fit in.

The world is very superficial, Korea society is on the top list along with the western world. It is not only Korea Celebrities who get plastic surgery but koreans regular citizens are also judge by their appearance in the work force to get a job. My personal opinion is why would any Asian change who they "really" are by changing their characteristics. Be who you are stop trying to look white or have western features. Plastic surgery yes may change your outward appearance. But it can not change your DNA genes, no matter how many plastic surgery you have, your future children will still have your original features and characteristics. Love you Love your Asian self.

Meh.... the beauty stigma is a global problem, it's just that Korea takes it to a whole new level. The media no matter which country is always displaying their own perspective of beauty. Compared to Korea I don't think most around the "World" or "Western" countries will casually talk so freely of plastic surgery as the population in Korea will. Sure plastic surgery happens around the world but Korea has earned the title as the "Capital" of plastic surgery from all around the globe following the K-POP hype. I do think it's a problem because Korean social media have a ruthless reputation for calling out or starting rumors over Korean celebrities having had plastic surgery or not despite being a "Pro" plastic surgery culture. From the perspective of a resident in the US I don't mind plastic surgery as long as the person doesn't become unrecognizable. I certainly wouldn't recommend plastic surgery unless it involves a health issue or due to an accident of some sort.

Nice video as always, Asian Boss-- thank you! I may have an unpopular opinion (and I don't disdain other points of view), but I just find it really depressing how accepting [Korean] society is of plastic surgery. We're all brainwashed to some extent, but witnessing its effects on this level is pretty disturbing. It's amazing how "modifying" your features based on media influence is readily encouraged. Getting plastic surgery for reasons outside of injuries and birth defects is a blatant statement to low self-esteem; it bothers me that body dysmorphia is cured with artificial procedures such as this.

I think people should embrace the way they look more. The media tells us what is considered beautiful and what's not. If it wouldn't be promoted so much, no one would care. That's why peole nowadays are getting into a depression very easily, if they are for example not as skinny as some celebrities or models. In the end it's all about the money. They make so much money out of the beauty industry, it's incredible. If nobody would care about their looks as much anymore, it would be a huge deficit for the industry. (Just an unpopular opinion from Germany 😉)

First, and God knows I have no idea why I wrote this much, thanks so much for giving light to these people's perspectives and thoughts on such a complex issue. It, like every other vid I've checked on your channel, was super insightful and interesting. Now, for my thoughts. Another aspect to this that's really interesting to me is that there is certainly a culture/presence of plastic surgery in the West, so while South Korea regularly gets attention for it, I want people from the West who express judgment, pity, or otherwise look down on it to remember that. When Kylie Jenner can shoot to her current fame and mass exposure ONLY after getting enough procedures in her teenage years to look like an entirely different person (literally new face and basically new body) + scandals made possible and relevant BY that transformation (and her relationships), we have to admit to ourselves that if it's a problem, it's our problem too, just a different country and cultural context. Attraction is powerful, beauty is powerful, being treated well and advancing in society because you /look/ the part enough is powerful. Whether we like it or not, I 100% understand the push factors toward getting them. I would love for people to love the way they already look, but even makeup provides a slightly different look than our natural selves to enhance our features, so I can understand trying to make those enhancements and all the benefits that CAN come from it more permanent. Furthermore, I believe in the right to choice, so ultimately, my opinion feels like that of the girl with the red jacket and pink sweater, or the guy with the glasses and hoodie, plus or minus some extra considerations. I don't think any group of people's natural and more distinctive features that become racialized on the global stage (like monolids for certain Asian groups, tall nose bridges for white people, or full lips, noses and figures in the black diaspora) SHOULD be treated like problems, because in reality if it's not harming your life and it's natural, nothing's genuinely wrong with it, and I personally think all peoples and features can be plenty beautiful in all their variety and combinations. Unfortunately, we're far far removed from societies that run their beauty standards on what's truly natural as a rule. People in mass numbers DO subscribe to various beauty biases, and it DOES affect people's lives. Attractive people are treated better and "unattractive", with some exceptions, are not. With that in mind, plastic surgery or beauty enhancement procedures are almost like an investment in your own social standing and personal confidence in your body image. Actually, many times they flat out are. So again, I defend that it's a personal choice and I can understand why others do it, but my hope is for a world where we aren't so strict on our guidelines for what can be beautiful or attractive, that we can all, regardless of what we look like naturally, navigate throughout the world feeling comfortable in our physical form, therefore helping out our mental too. Not everyone has the option to get this stuff done, or even wants to, so should they just...hate themselves for not having the body enhancements of an instagram model or the face of an idol? My hope is a future where the answer is no. Alright, if anyone read to the end of this, you're the goat.

This whole video/comment section is very interesting to me: as someone from the Midwest US who's never met or known anyone with PS or cosmetic surgery aside from what's needed after an injury(most of the girls I know don't even wear makeup except for a date or job interviews lol) it's hard to get enough perspective on it to form an opinion. I know PS is VERY much looked down on here, but this is just one small part of a very large country so.......I guess it just all comes down to whether it's societal pressure or if somebody is actually doing for THEM, not just to fit someone else's standards? If that's the case I see nothing wrong with tweaking yourself a bit. But then I've always hated my nose lol😖😂 BTW it's kind of hilarious reading people from around the world's ideas your culture, some are so off! But then I'm pretty sure we're all thinking that at some of these comments, wherever we happen to be from.😊

wow! this is just so surprising. I've always grew up believing to cherish and love what the mighty above has given you. Of course there was a point in your life most especially when you are in high school thinking how you look. but other than not to the extent that it would affect your work, friends how society would look at you and etc. the root of this mentality is insecurities, bullying. my friends would always bully each other that "you're so ugly", 'what the heck are you wearing?" "you're so black i can't see you in the dark" "you're so pale did you eat?" and stuff like that but it doesn't really bother us. I guess loving yourself and knowing yourself makes you to be able to deal with these kind of things..

What a frank and insightful discussion. It's great to have these voices out there. I like how most of them brought it back to diplomatic reasoning : it's a personal choice, who are we to judge others? That's refreshing seeing as what the media tends to circle when it comes to Koreans is overzealous K-netz and society. Seems like the younger generation are opening up to being less reserved and judgemental.

Since I started to watch k dramas, listening to k pop or in general be interested in the korean culture I started to think more and more about my outer appearance than before like clothes, beauty, makeup etc. After watching your Videos I think that this kind of trend is only in Tv and Media. The people living there aren't like that. I think they are normal like their appearance, weight etc. But they also know that plastic surgery is something common in Korea and already normal. I live in Germany and here are the people not like that. For example in a job interview they just want that your appearance is polish. They don't care if you don't fit in the standard. I don't think in Germany is a beauty standard like in Korea at all. I think in Germany they just care about what you have done so far in your life like grades, how long have you worked, are you ambitious, are you confident to get the job and stuff like that. They just care if your are healthy. They don't think that much about being thin unless you are obese. In Germany they care about your personal opinion. Sure there are people who care about your appearance and that kind of things but it's not extreme as in Korea. If you have a plastic surgery in Germany and people didn't knew it they think you are not confident about your appearance before. If you say just freely that you had a surgery they think that you are even more confident to speak about it. But all in all in Germany it isn't that common to have plastic surgery and if they do it than only to have bigger lips and that was a beauty standard from Instagram like all these bloggers. It isn't also common that guys wear makeup or use beauty products. And maybe they use beauty products if they have acne or something like that. I think that the countries have a big gap in beauty standards and do something about it. I liked your video a lot because I think to watch videos like that people will recognize that beauty isn't everything in life. 😊
