Well, it may be an extreme way of losing weight, but, as you see, they care more about their appearance than about their health. Also, many people starve themselves because it's the fastest or even the only way they can lose weight. I'm not defending them or saying it's better to starve yourself instead of losing weight in a 'healthy' way. I just wanted to share my opinion.

None of them were even remotely fat. I actually gained weight due to the quarantine, I ballooned up to 195 lbs which is 20 lbs more my normal weight of 175 lbs. But after dieting and doing 30 minute exercises I lost 20 lbs in two months. The secret to losing weight is to just eat less. You can still eat all your favorite food but in portions instead of whole so for example instead of eating a whole box of pizza, only eat three slices of pizza.

I think most don't know the healthy way. Starving is easier for them than exercising. Plus, many kpop idols have really horrific crash diets. Overall, it's not sustainable long term. However, there is this popular style of eating called Intermittent fasting. It's a great way to make sure you dont over eat it also get the benefits of fasting. I typically do omad (one meal a day) and I've done adf (alt day fasting) as well. The mentality of fasting and starving are different. Many people do 3day water fast to lose weight or to heal their skin or w.e. once you get used to a life style it's not too hard.
@buzzlightyearandco4 жыл бұрын
Starving is not effective because it's not deliberate nor controlled. But intermittent fasting (if you're not underweight, pregnant, still growing or have certain medical conditions like Type 1 diabetes) and shorter prolonged fasts (1-3 days) are very effective and healthy for you

I will never forget when I used to live in Korea and taught there, my female students saying that any woman over 48 kg was not a woman. When I first got there, I weighed 112 kg, I went to the gym, got a trainer, and got down to 79 kg. His goal for me was 50 kg. I thought he was crazy. I'm 170 cm and that is too tiny. Since leaving Korea, I'm now 60 kgs and have been for the past 3 years. I eat whole foods plant based and exercise 45 minutes daily. I think 60 kg is healthy and can't imagine being any smaller.
@theemperor35572 жыл бұрын
I think 112kg for 170cm is acutually obese so it’s good your a healthy weight now which is 60-80 kg but below 48 is impossible for your height
@footballchica0262 жыл бұрын
@@theemperor3557 yes, I was definitely obese. and their standards are crazy to me. I'd have to starve to get that small and I'd probably look very unhealthy
@villainousextremity2 жыл бұрын
Reading your reply helped me understand how lucky I am to not live there. I would probably face judgements everyday about my appearance or weight. There's always a certain healthy weight range for each height and yeah 48kg isn't okay if you're 170cm tall. Unless you're naturally skinny I guess it's fine.
@footballchica0262 жыл бұрын
@@villainousextremity right? If you're that tall and naturally skinny like that, it's fine. but starving to try to attain that is not ok. I loved Korea and it's my second home. I lived there 3 years and even got married there. But their obsession with appearance is something I don't miss. People did make a lot of comments like "you have a pretty face but need to lose weight." "you have eyes like a doll but you'd look better skinnier." It bothered me. Attractive people get more, your picture is required on resumes, etc. Way too much focus on appearance
@villainousextremity2 жыл бұрын
@@footballchica026 exactly. You shouldn't try to "diet" to be underweight or look pretty in a way you probably don't want to on your own. And honestly I think being healthy and fit is a lot more beautiful than fitting in these so called standards that prolly might not last long. There are health complications when being severely underweight such as menstrual problems, risk of osteoporosis, growth issues, anemia, etc. I guess if I would u I would get my freaking ass out of that country. It's just too toxic. Ps: I think you're beautiful already. Don't listen to these ridiculous people.

I see a lot of ppl commenting they are sick, or their mentality is unhealthy..etc. As a Korean myself, most women in Korea consider themselves not good enough to fit the beauty standard. This is mainly because of our highly competitive society, forcing women to compare and put themselves down. Thus it’s definitely hard to break that cycle of going on a diet and giving up, consequently feeling guilty. I realized this only after immigrating to Canada

I lived in Seoul for 3 years in middle and high school and I can confirm that the pressure of perfection in regard to appearance is pretty crippling. Although I'm half Korean, when I moved to Korea I had never before been really exposed to Korean diet culture and such, and I moved right as I was starting to hit my growth spurt, so I very quickly became hyper-aware and self-conscious of my body. This eventually turned into an eating disorder after a year of slowly realizing that I wasn't as skinny as everyone else around me. There's so much pressure to fit into a perfect, tiny mold, and I can't even imagine how much this would be heightened for people who are entirely Korean. I love many parts of Korea and my time there but my relationship with food permanently changed during my time there and it's caused pretty severe body dysmorphia that I still haven't gotten over years later. I hope the more girls help to change the culture surrounding body image there like the ones in this video!

In general, individuals in Korea (any gender) are incredibly appearance-driven. I’ve had male students go on extreme diets. I’ve also had male adolescents and adults both tell me that I would look better if I were skinnier (I’m 158cm and 50kg). The problem is *systemic*.

This is so common in my country and many other Asian country. Commenting on someone's looks or weight is one of the go to ways to make small talk and it's sad how normalised it is. If I get offended for someone saying I look fatter since they last saw me, people would say that the problem is me.
@marta67552 жыл бұрын
My family is like that, it is terrible. 🥺 And my friends are like that if they see you losing weight, it will be first thing they say. So that means they see if you gain some too but don't say that. I find it all so strange and messed up. I don't notice weight first when I see person nor change of it at all if it wasn't very drastic. And even if I did I would never see it my place to point it out. If it is bigger difference they know it and I myselfe have no idea about reasions for it (esther gain or loss of weight) so I shouldn't talk about what I don't understand. And if I am worried about them I should check about how they are feeling and doing generaly in life. That is real reasion effecting weight and only important thing in all of this.

The word "DIET" did not mean losing weight in the first place. It's supposed to point out proper nutrition. And I must say, I do apologize, but dancer or not, subtracting 115 from your height in cm to get your "ideal" weight, is a whole level of BS. Men and women alike should think like the ladies at the end of the video. EAT. Properly. Because, would you rather be skinny and dead or sick, or be at a manageable weight and happily enjoy your time with family and friends doing stuff like sports and the like? People will always have an opinion. To some "you need to lose weight"; others, "you must have an eating disorder" (which may be true). Just strive to be healthier physically and mentally. Remember that for the celebrities that we aspire to be like, they have access to resources, dieticians, fitness coaches and of course good ol' photoshop. So please please do stay healthy.

Because korea is easily influenced by their music and modeling industries. Here in the US some of the mdoels, wont say the majority, eat very healthily and exercise A LOT. Some korea might, but majority starve with VERY small portions. Like eating one apple and tea every day. Or eating only one chicken breast everyday, cutting out healthy carbs (which are bad when excessive.), or they will eat what fits into a really small cup for the entire day. This extreme dieting and expectation can lead to body dysmorphic and eating disorders, which are highly common in korea.

@minilex31855 жыл бұрын
@@gobwinn1ng Not most. A lot of them follow diet of eating one apple and drinking tea everyday, eating only chicken, or eating only what fits into a tiny cup. Even keto diets, in the moment it is good, but in the long run it hurts your body massively. You need carbs, but people associate it as bad because they take in too much. Which is where portion control comes in. Most korean diets are implemented by the pop industry artists, who in fact starve themselves skinny with their small portions of only eating one thing per day.

I am 5'8 (173cm) and 134lbs (60 kgs) and a size 4 and i consider myself to be pretty slim but not super skinny. A Korean girl once asked me how much I weighed and when I told her she looked mortified! Then she kept assuring me that I was much thinner than that and there is no way I could weigh that much :/ Is this a normal thing that koreans don't know what is the healthy/expected weight for someone of taller stature? That they assume someone who is 5'4 should weigh similarly to someone who is 5'8?
@fishseas2 жыл бұрын
Late reply but… Women in Asia are generally much shorter, the standards are based off of a woman who is from 5’2-5’5 at most I would assume.

@LisaKirova3 жыл бұрын
@AllenLee idk what exact research they’re referring to but it’s true that eating a larger amount of right / healthier foods consistently (think nuts, eggs, brown rice, chicken breast, tofu) is better than going on a calorie deficit or fast, which is almost always followed by not being able to resist (bc it’s just human temptation) & binge eating to excess (the so-called “yo yo diets”)
@LisaKirova3 жыл бұрын
@AllenLee that’s why I say largER amt not large 😅 I do agree with u about the rec calories tho, bc in my personal exp I def eat under 2000 let alone 2400 bc I’m mostly eating nutritionally correct foods like low carb or low fat. But in the past I used to do crazy things like 500 cal a day diet which is a terrible deficit & inevitably end up over eating after. So that’s the part of dieting I disagree with bc it fails & you get a yo-yo effect. Moderation in everything.

Their cultures have such strong influences and travelled upon the oceans. Compared to other places, south korea has really high beauty standards so even though they are fit to foreigners, they constantly beat themselves up (not literally) and call themselves fat, ugly, and unattractive even though they really aren't. They have to pay so much attention to their appearance that it's concerning, but sometimes they don't even notice if they starve themselves to fit korea's standards.

I'm guessing They re not all fit. There's a thing called skinny fat, which most of these girls are. They weigh less than the average women but Asians have smaller bone structure i believe, so in reality they could be fat. Weight means nothing a lot of the time. If they dieted and exercised they would probably weigh more but look way better. I am very insecure about the way I look not how much I weigh. These girls would be surprised how much exercising correctly and putting on a little bit of muscle could do for them
