Your language skills are amazing. My sister is fluent in English and French. She lived in France for several years. Ahhh, I feel you so much! Czech is my mother tongue too and I just feel like I can no longer speak Czech properly. I am even losing my English and other languages are lost for good. I guess this is really a struggle of almost every multilingual or bilingual person haha, thanks for this video. I see so many multilingual people around me and I am so envious but it's good to remind ourselves that we all are still human and we make mistakes and forget stuff hehe

I have the same "issue"... my mother tongue is Spanish (here in Argentina) but my "default" language has become English... now that I'm learning Japanese I like how Japanese has so many expressions that I use all the time. I also forget MANY words in Spanish but I fully know the meaning... but only comes out in English. FUNNY thing it happened to me: I had a surgery with full anesthesia and I woke up speaking English only 💀 I was able to understand Spanish but I couldn't speak it because "I" forgot Spanish for 2 hours while the anesthesia was going out of my body.

I can both speak italian (mother tongue) and english fluently, and I thought that having words on the tip of my tongue very often was just a skill issue. I'm kinda relieved to know that other multi-linguals have this problem too. Also, I related so much when you said that you were trying to say something in your mother tongue, but only the english grammatical form came to your mind but it didn't exist in czech. It always happends to me too

Something that happens to me and my sister a lot is, that while we are speaking spanish we try to say a word, but we just don't get how to say it, we know how to say it in english, but no in spanish. Protože mě samotného fascinovalo, jak mrštně a okamžitě jsem dokázal naprosto zapomnět, jak mluvit španělsky a portugalsky, když jsem všechen mentální prosor věnoval mluvě v anglištině na Erasmu, i kdybych třeba zkoušky z nich měl těsně před odjezdem. Ovšem pouze mluvit. Bizarní na tom je totiž to, že rozumím jim stále kompletně :D A ta slovíčka vetřelci? Na to jsem odborník! I study Korean and I’m not even good at it yet, but whenever I hear something in English I will like scan my brain to see if I know the word in korean. And one time my friends and I were talking and the word “grapes” came into the convo and I just randomly said out loud “포도!”. It was so embarrassing but I think it’s a good way to help learn a language while speaking your native tongue

2:35 Dude once i was in a language class (I’m from chile so Spanish) and i had to complete a sentence with the word “granja” and i just couldn’t remember it in Spanish, so i started asking my classmates how to say “farm” in Spanish xd

the imposter words and grammar gets is so real. Im currently living in korea and therefore learning Korean but when I go back to speaking either english or spanish with hometown friends random korean words pop into my sentences. I also subconsciously use the "A therefore B" grammar with spanish now which makes no sense at all

I think is amazing that you can keep up with so many languages. Thanks for sharing your experience, most people would think that we have to be 100% fluent to have a good level of understanding, but in reality we often use a certain amount of words we are used to. I'm learning japanese, I hope I can get to a level of comprehenssion similar to my english eventually, especially with reading.

I'm from Brazil and I am trying to improve my English while watching series or reading in English, but I have to say that the most difficult part is to speak, even though I understand everything they're saying, I still struggle to find the right words and sentences. Theses past 2 years, discord has been an important place where I tried to talk and don't be too shy. However doing voice calls it's the most difficult action, you know, that kind of fear to make a mistake😅 but I'm trying, so fighting!! Hope everything turns out well. I frequently forget the word "estrangeiro", in Portuguese, and instead, the first thing that comes to my mind is "外人" (gaijin), in Japanese, and then, "foreigner", in English. It's kainda crazy because Portuguese is my first language.

I miss words ending in 感 in other languages like 清潔感、達成感 etc. They're so snappy and useful in Japanese, but their translations sound clumsy/awkward. When somebody asks you a negative question like "So you aren't coming today, right?" answering "No." would be ambiguous because it's not clear whether you meant "No, I'm not." or "No, I actually am.", but in German you can say "Doch!" which always means the latter, which is pretty nifty. Lastly, few languages have a collection of swear words as diverse as Croatian. It's hard to translate them especially into Japanese, which has next to none.

Same goes for American Sign Language being my first language which doesn’t necessarily have structure considerably it’s fluid and more visually imaginative based however learning English at the same time, all the sudden I hear English and see signs in my head formed in English structure. I definitely can relate to words on the tip of my tongue like I’ll know the word to say but can’t remember to sign it or know the sign for that word but can’t remember what word was it for.

@@atagami.654 Well depending on what region you mean, if you mean like within United States then there are “accents” as in the same word may be signed differently in one state than another yet still means the same thing. If you mean North America then it very much vary considering sign language isn’t universal like you might think since like there’s every difference language then also different sign language like there’s Mexican sign language for Mexico and Quebec sign language for Quebec in Canada.

For me, the fact that I'm forgetting words in my native language is more apparent when it comes to "literary vocab" (by which I mean mostly descriptive words that you rarely see/use outside of books). I haven't read any book in German in years; I'm either reading in English or in one of my target languages. I'm used to having people around me who at least understand a decent amount of English, so I often end up using a mix of German and English. But the other day, I was running a game of DnD where some of the players didn't understand English all that well. Since English has become my default language, I also do session prep in English so I had to translate my notes into German. I didn't off the cuff cause I figured "I understand what all of these English words mean. German is my native language so it'll be fine". Yeah, no. It went something like this: "So as you take a closer look, you notice there's something... En...engraved? On the... Uh... What's the word for the part of the sword where you hold it?"

Ahhh so that's what it is I speak English Hindi Assamese But my Mother language is Dimasa I remembered once I Went grocery shopping and i couldn't find chillies there so I asked help from a person there but the problem was he only speak Hindi/Assamese. And my brain just couldn't remember what it's(chilli) called in Hindi . My mind knew what it was called in English and Dimasa but couldn't remember it. Later after stressing for a while I remembered what it was again and I was pretty shocked with what happened.

I speak 3 languages fluetntly and have been my whole life because of growing up in a bilingual family (+ learned English from the internet, nows its sort of become my default language even if i still live in the country of my mother tounge)! Im also growing up in a small country in Europe so having more language skills will help me since not a lot of things outside my country are available in that language. Theres a lot of russians here but funny enough i have almost no idea how to speak it, i have only picked up some words and slang. So my next languages im targetting are Turkish, Russian and maybe Japanese for fun since i dont think i'll need it. i remember when i was in elementary, I would try to speak french and some russian words would slip in there because my family speaks russian (my main language has always been english, but my family speaks some russian, and I live in quebec so I'm meant to speak french, i still can't speak french too well, but I've been trying to learn some more lately) when i would try to speak french, i guess my brain just went "these are words that aren't english, USE THEM.." and then the russian words slip into my french sentence

I don't know why, but japanese always tries to get into my Spanish... Also, when I have to hastily start writing a word, and that word happens to start with a syllable that exists in hiragana, my brain just thinks "oh, why don't I just use the muscle memory for that hiragana", and then I have to cross it through and continue with latin script...

I'm a russian native speaking person (because that language were used in family from childhood) but since 5 yo I'm learning Ukrainian and at 7 yo started learning English in school. A lot of content I'm consumed in English for last 20 years, and it was very funny then my brain starts switching. Few years ago I left russian language only for speaking with friends and family and go only Ukrainian in public places. And it was only 2 weeks switch. And even my first language is russian, right know a lot of reflections (in meaning inner voice and etc) is Ukrainian. After ruzzian invasion in Ukraine, I have started to learn other languages since April, and that was Spanish. Because google and youtube watching us, youtube starting propose me videos in Spanish... and guess what? - i could consume simple content even not switching my native inner voice. Since I started, I'm learning each day, at least 5-15 minutes in each mobile app I have (1-2 hours in total for all languages daily). I always was shocked how people in Amsterdam switched from any language to English, then to Dutch and then in one another language (maybe their Dutch MaryJane gave them some abilities, I don't know) - it was so motivating for me each time in Amsterdam. After six month of Spanish I added Catalan language, and the last in this trio is Portuguese (sorry Italian and French :)). Right now my language pairs like russian(Ukrainian)-Spanish/Catalan/Portuguese/Japanese, Spanish - Catalan/Portuguese/Japanese, English - Spanish/Portuguese/Japanese. I'm switching between them few times per day because using different apps - Duolingo, Busuu, Mondly Languages, DuoCards, Memorise, Babel, few more. Now I'm trying to learn Japanese , to switch to Korean after half a year if I will have success with Japanese languages. For current moment I'm very happy how my brain could switch and able to learn new languages despite of I was 20yo twenty years ago. Learning languages helps to be in clear mind in hard nowadays and gives some feeling of FRESH air and hope. I'm happy that I have motivational almost for 300days and didn't miss any day for learning, even it was 5 minutes. So don't waste your time, start today, because in current world tomorrow day may not start for you and those you know PS I don't mention C++, Java, Python, and other programming languages I'm used in my career :) but it's possible that I just not seen my abilities to learn real languages before, while spending my time learning Java to get better job.
