Russia Ukraine War | Ukraine Crisis | Conflict in Ukraine | Ukraine Russia War | Raisina Dialogue 2022 |
From the NATO-bashers to Russian dissidents, West-is-best brigade to Russian revanchists, all thought the war should end at the point it stood. However, their motivations were not so aligned.
For much of the West and Africa, President Putin was singularly blamed, placing the war in the realm of the irrational, and thus, beyond that of justification, as a kind of barbaric mistake that serves neither country’s interests. Igwe argued that both Russia and Ukraine would be taken back at least 20 developmental years. At the root of the conflict was a basic zero-sum calculation that seemed more zero-zero.
Otherwise, the conflict was said to be born of Russian security concerns, enflamed by the eastward expansion of NATO. A select few saw this as a legitimate jus ad bellum. For the Russians, this conflict is a great balance of power exercise-inseparable from decades of Russian attempts-to achieve geographical security from a combative and encroaching West. There was not a single mention of denazification, fascism, or much at all on Ukraine as a culture or threat in its own right.
