Braid to leader for all applications, nothing beats it. When done properly with the right knots it never fails. Definitely wouldn’t throw swimbaits on it if braid to leader is new for you. Too risky until you’ve mastered the connection knot. Once I got comfortable with it I started saving sooo much money by only tying a new 8-15ft leader every trip

Just got into big baits for stripers and got my 1st gut wrenching SNAP with power pro 65lb and saw my 6oz trout swimbait fly! Thank god it was only a $20 bait... switching to 25lb mono. Just sucks cuz I only carry one rod n reel with me and I like to fish top water too. I may have to start carrying a dedicated topwater set up with braid. Great video James. Keep it up

I have a HUGE QUESTION! Please Help! I am new to bait-casters, used maybe a few times to cast (2-3), and last summer, and before that I was an avid fisherman using spinning gear. Cheap BPS Combo, Pfueuger on a 39.99$ blue rod, it was a combo. I was using 20LB braid I believe with a 12lb Flourocarbon leader..... I love tossing plastics, SENKOS, any kind of creature bait, but I am looking for a setup (baitcaster) in the 200-250 range (ROD/REEL). What would you SUGGEST????? I want to be able to use this new bait caster for throwing senkos, but doing things I COULD NOT with the spinning rod......like toss jigs, spinnerbaits, chatters, buzz, etc without my cheap rod BENDING IN HALF trying to reel in the Jig or Spinner.....It was horrible! I tossed a jig out, and tried popping it off the bottom & it was just bending my top rod half.....so I wouldn't know what was on there!!! People have been saying go with the BPS PRO QUALIFIER & JOHNNY MORRIS ROD (MedHeavy) (This was the employees opinion over Lews, Quantium, etc. I dont have the money to buy a rod for each setup, but I want the combo to be able to handle weightless senkos, all the way up to a 3/4 oz jig without having to worry about the rod bending, I want it to cast like a dream (Hence the bait caster), be durable, and ya, just something that can handle most things without having to change my line........COULD YOU PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR OPINION I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT, everyone I talk to says go with the Qualifier, or Go with DIAWA, or LEWS, mostly Quantium..........I am totally mindless! Keep in mind again I only have 250$ to spend, and I NEED IT TO be able to toss Finesse without backlash, throw finesse jigs, as where I fish the bass are tricky, last summer all they wanted was senkos, and its the truth....not a lot of fish in our lakes in MASS esp. where I live. Is it possible to get a setup that will do swimbaits, senkos, buzz, and all the other types I listed?????? Please Respond Anyone.

Hi, I got my hands on a used Daiwa Luna 253 that I was hoping to use as a starter swimbait reel. My question is would I have enough "workable" line capacity if I decide to go with 25lb mono/copoly to throw a Deps 250? Mfg indicates it can hold 150yd of 17lb test (so I would guess I would have around 90-100 yds spooled). Thanks!

Gotta offer an opposing viewpoint. I'm straight braid through and through unless fishing ultra gin clear water. Even then, I've caught plenty of quality bass and stripers to 35lbs using straight braided line on big swimbaits. I don't buy into snapoff theory. I've snapped off more lures in a lifetime on mono than on straight 65-80lb braid. I religiously fish the CA delta and honestly can say, if I'm not slow rolling a hudd or something, it's straight 65. You guys really think a fish that's keyed in on that 8-10" glider is paying attention to the line? Matt Newman has a few articles about this. He fishes straight braid on all of his hard/gliders and he's a legend in his own right with tons of big fish under his belt. The reason being, when you swing on a big fish on a 3-6oz lure, you penetrate those 3-4X hooks way deeper and keep fish pinned better than mono could ever come close to. Mono flexing results in many lost fish or shitty hooksets IMO. Mono does reduce hook wrap. That's about it for me. Just an opinion, nothing wrong with using mono, I just dont buy into "these big fish that eat rats, ducks, footlong trout, carp and each other are line shy"
@SwimbaitChronicles
@SwimbaitChronicles 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Armstrong totally valid points and I know matt fishes braid. But for most beginners casting something like a deps is hard enough for the first couple times. Mono to me is a safer choice to reduce snapping off. But I'm with ya on braid. I run it more than I say but I don't like to recommend it to kids spending their lunch money on expensive Lures. To each their own. That's what makes fishin Great everyone finds their own way they like
@erikmonclark8023
@erikmonclark8023 7 жыл бұрын
Daniel Armstrong do you die the braided line or use a sharpie. I love straight braid but sometimes I feel like it discolors and fades. I sometimes use a sharpie but sometimes I don't even care. will the nasty smell of a sharpie discourage a fish or mess up the line? I just never care for tieing on a leader. I recently got dark green J braid and I feel like that keeps its color way longer than suffix 832 or power pro.

Your doing a great job with your videos, It's hard when you don't have a bunch of Swimbait rods and reels to have so many different lines rigged up on a single outing,how do you get around that. Do you just plan on throwing what you know you'll be using a spool up with that line on that reel?
@SwimbaitChronicles
@SwimbaitChronicles 8 жыл бұрын
+Ifnotforgrace316 I usually take minimal baits out. Reduces tons of choices and forces me to fish each bait to their max potential and reduces a ton of line choices. A good all around line is 20-25lb mono. I've had trips where I was lazy and that's all I spoiled and worked fine for the day

I'm really confused so isn't fluorocarbon better than mono because no stretch because people say they use mono because no stretch or did u just say it so nothing will break off
@SwimbaitChronicles
@SwimbaitChronicles 7 жыл бұрын
Lunker Chaser I use Fluoro for soft sinking baits because most of the time they have a jig hook. So you want the lack of stretch for the hookset on that and the sensitivity of Fluoro to detect a bite on a soft bait. On glide baits and most treble baits I'll use mono or co-poly because it does have a bit of stretch in it to act as a shock absorber during head shakes so the fish doesn't spit or throw a hook. And on really big baits I use mono for the same reason and also for casting because if a big heavy lure stops mid air for any reason the line will give a little and hopefully not snap off that expensive Lure.

For backing, wouldn't using cheap mono be better than the braid if you are looking to save money? I've just never heard of people using braid as backing since braid itself is somewhat high in cos, and due to the lower diameters I'd think you would have to use a pretty good amount to get a solid backing no?
@SwimbaitChronicles

TheBushwooky I use braid cuz of how long you can keep it on a spool. I've had same backing on one of my reels for probably a year or more. Not saying that couldn't be done with mono or that mono Isnt cheaper cuz it is. Braid just lasts way longer. I use 80lb for my backing usually. Sometimes 65lb. And I usually get the big spools online on Amazon for cheaper than going to bps or big box store

Swimbait Chronicles I guess that's a good point. I'm just used to using really mono backing on my conventional bass gear and changing it out when I change out the mainline (which isn't all that often due to how much I fish). On my swim bait setup I just have 20lb mono right now no backing. Thanks for the info though, your channel is awesome!

What beginner swimbaits reel can u recommend to me with $100
@SwimbaitChronicles
@SwimbaitChronicles 7 жыл бұрын
Bass Slayer used lexa 300 or lees super duty wide spool I think it's called. Both cheaper good solid reels that can be found for around 100 give or take

Bass Slayer depends on what your throwing man. 17-25lb mono or Copoly will get you through most situations

Does Izorline Copolymer float or sink
@SwimbaitChronicles
@SwimbaitChronicles 7 жыл бұрын
Zack Briggs it sinks but it has an extremely slow sink rate compared to Fluoro. It still can be used for top water applications if your moving at a moderate to medium speed. Or you can crank it down, maybe not as deep as Fluoro but pretty close

i've casted many 2-3oz jig heads for lingcod and SOMETIMES it will snap off of my 65lb straight braid. Depends how hard you cast it. about 30% chance snap rate for me when 'backlash'

Good ol jimmy jack funk. What's up dude. I remember ya ripping me a new one on the top 3 baits video cuz I accidentally said walk instead of wake. I've been throwing big baits 7days a week on the lake I live on for about a year my friend. And sporadically before that. But about a year ago I ditched all my regular tackle and went 100% sb for my everyday fishing. You know Anthony right? .
