I'm not the biggest fan of just slapping your logo on a garment and calling the design a day, but man, Arc'teryx's is so damn cool. It works perfectly as a logo as it is recognisable, descriptive and fitting, but it also works as a simple graphic that would still look good without any brand connection.
@skankytrick
@skankytrick 2 жыл бұрын
My Piedmont vest only has the logo printed very small on the back on the very bottom. I didn't even know it was there at all until I saw someone mention it online as a detail that they most liked about the vest. In fact, this completely clean look is what drew me to the vest in the first place, and then when I read the reviews, at least 75% of them mentioned they were delighted by the lack of branding. As an honorable mention, I have a Rag & Bone wool jacket that also has no external branding. It is a $600 jacket but is so nice that it doesn't need to lean on its branding in order to stand out. I think that is the pinnacle of quality: such outstanding quality and clean presentation that a product does not need to prominently display a logo in order to leverage its brand recognition.

I'm someone who enjoys the outdoors and skateboarding, so I see where you're coming form in terms of brand image for Arc'Teryx. But Palace is kinda like the Arc'Teryx of skateboarding; a more underground company that was more interested in sport and intended use than hype and fashion. Though Palace has evolved to have many collabs with other brands, those collabs are just genuinely out of fun and creativity instead of hype.

Arc'teryx is great, most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. I love how the jackets etc don't raise up when you raise your arms. It's kind of worrisome if it's getting super popular with people who don't care as much about durability and functionality because the quality is probably going to go down. Five ten switched focus to biking and the guide tennies are absolute garbage: which lead me to la sportiva, and then I got a pair of konseal shoes to see what you got for the extra 50 bucks over la sportiva which was way more comfort and functionality. I get diminishing returns for quality and I get paying a hair more for a name because you can say oh it's this, I know it's good. But if I have to pay a ton more for trendy bs I'm done with the brand at that point.

Tbf moving away from Gore-Tex isn't neccessarily diluting your brand from aperformance perspective, it's a valid move once you've reached a certain size. Gore's important patents have expired and at this point, Gore-Tex' biggest advantage is their outright ridiculous mindshare when it comes to waterproof membranes. Though that could also change quickly, considering the greenwashing trend in a lot of outdoor companies and the fact that greenwashing a prodcut that relies on ePTFE membranes is nigh impossible. At some point, developing in-house, proprietary technology just becomes a ton cheaper and much less of a pain.
@ThisIsAntwon
@ThisIsAntwon 3 жыл бұрын
That's very true and a good point. On top of that a lot of people don't necessarily need the level of water resistance Gore-Tex (or an equivalent 3l membrane) offers, so 'less performance' in that respect is not necessarily a bad thing because you might get greater comfort or breathability (or a lower price!) as a resukt
@JohnSmith-fe1id
@JohnSmith-fe1id 2 жыл бұрын
To add to your part about arcteryx gaining credibility for using gore-tex, it should be known that gore-tex wouldn't be what it is today without arcteryx working with them for decades. Arcteryx helped develop gore-tex to match their performance requirements.

Weird how it's popularity now has more to do with Veblen hype ("Expensive means good!") of cheaper, lower qualit current Arc'teryx, than the product requirements and manufacturing that made the pre-2001 stuff expensive in the first place. High performance specialist mountain and ice climbing gear made in Vancouver. Now it's just another WPB membrane shell made in Vietnam or Indonesia that sells for 5x the price of the WPB membrane shells made beside it in the same factories. Ironically often for low cost higher performance outdoor brand Mountain Equipment Co-op (who basically just initially copied the business model of REI Co-op in Seattle, but did expand to designing their own gear rather than just importing existing stuff), also founded and product designed in Vancouver long before Arc'teryx. What Arc'teryx did is develop excellent, but very niche, specialized equipment for a very select hardcore outdoors clientele and made it to a very high standard locally in Vancouver. That justified the price at the time. "Made in Canada", "ethical" wages, environmental "standards". Then they quietly off-shored more mainstream outdoors gear to cheap labour countries (like everyone else to be fair) for the casual outdoors people who would hear how awesome it was from the super hardcore climbers. Kinda a bait and switch. Then Adidas bought them and brought them out of the mountains with collabs, and it was all down the hype mountain from there... Still decent stuff, just extraordinarily overpriced compared to other functional gear literally made in the same factories.

@@mw5360 that honestly depends on what Arc plans to do. They can easily take this and run with it, do collabs, sign celebs, all things that Nike and Adidas do for instance. If they go about things as they have always, then yes, you are right. I do hope those plebs don't discover the Arc outlet store I have near me though.

I want a video about how covid-19 has changed techwear. It's had a huge effect on fashion in general from streetwear to high fashion so there's no reason to think techwear hasn't changed. I mean what's your take on this? I've seen some comments about a 90's and early 00's extreme sport renaissance in the comments. I've also seen so many comfy fit's lately with fleece or wool sweaters.

I’ve always been aware of this brand, but this guy at work talks about Arcteryx the way I talk about Patagonia or LuluLemon so I’ve been thinking about actually picking some up recently. It seems pretty solid from what he’s described about it. I’m not a big fan of the logo though.

I work in the film industry, and I noticed a few months ago that the only the hardest working and most dedicated individuals brandished an Arc’teryx garment in one form or another. It’s how I found the brand, I feel like it makes you look like a professional.

Wear it everyday for work on the wet coast of BC, don’t buy it! Not any better than any other gortex and I have worn many name brands of gortex outerwear over the last 25 years! It would be alright at a quarter of the price but it is not worth the money. They do honor their warranty but at the price they charge it should not rip or tear or wear out as fast as it does.

Cambre pants (that denim looks intriguing), Convex LT pants (because moving to a hot&humid country soon), and one of the Frame shirts you recommended (in dire need of quality basics). Very much looking forward to a more visually toned down side of tech wear to see how it can mix with other styles.

There is an on-going love affair between Arc’teryx and W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore-Tex), ever since Arc’teryx revolutionized Gore-Tex Shell Jacket in 1995. There is no other company that loves Gore-Tex more than Ar’cteryx, with an exception of Gorewear (part of W.L. Gore & Associates), which conveniently does not compete with Arc’teryx. If you want to buy outerwear with Gore-Tex, your best bet is Arc’teryx.

Funny enough I am (potentially) one of the few whose interest peaked thanks to the skate/graffiti side of arcteryx, as a Minnesotan bordering Canada it’s always been around as an outdoor brand, but I really dove into the brand after getting its exposure in those worlds, around that time I was lucking out in thrift shops grabbing 1,000+ dollar jackets for 5-10 dollars and authenticating them at our local store... good times
