As a really really old metal fan , the day I heard Cliff had past was the first time someone other than a family member passing I cried. It broke my heart. The music world never mind the metal world will miss cliffs gift. We can only dream of what he could have gone onto do. Thank you for this Cici it brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye to see the younger generation still showing Cliff the respect he deserves. You did him proud.

When Metallica play Damage, Inc live they don't have Rob play the intro, they put on the studio version of Cliff doing it because it's so iconic and heart wrenching. I love that they honour him like that

Saw Cliff in Edinburgh on the MOP tour in Sept. '86 just a few weeks before the crash. Brilliant musician. What would Metallica be like today if he was still with us? The fact that he got the rest of Metallica to relocate to SF so that they could have him in the band tells you how much they recognised his abilities.

@@lockharthorsburgh8601 Yep, and only about £5 a ticket. Still have the programme, ticket stub and tour t-shirt (which still fits!). Frankie Bello wearing fishnets and a tutu was a bit weird though.

My T-shirt fell apart about 15 years ago (still have the '87 Motörhead shirt from a year later, but it's too fragile to wear), and I've moved around too much to still have the ticket stub, but most of the memories are still there (I had forgotten about Bello and his outfit until you mentioned it, but I did remember Anthrax doing a version of "I am the Law" several months before that album was released). From memory, I was in row J of the stalls, near the middle. I have to admit, in those pre-internet days, it was only when they played For Whom the Bell Tolls that I realised the intro melody was on bass. Still one of my top 5 gigs of all time, and not just because of what happened 15 days later.

Cliff was the first player that really made me realize what else the bass can do in a band and he's still one of my biggest influences on bass as well as a big reason why I bought a Rickenbacker (though mine is a 4003S) and why I started using a few of my own guitar pedals with bass. He was undoubtedly one of the most unique players in all of rock and metal but it's still such a tragedy that we lost him so young at the age of only 24

A nice new format for a video, any plans to do others on other bassists like Steve Harris or Geezer Butler? Always nice to see some Cliff appreciation, those first 3 Metallica albums were something else, one of the rare bassists you can actually hear. I don't know why so many bassists keep their volume down, a few of the bands that have supported mine might as well have left their bassists at home with how little they can be heard.

This video makes me want to adjust my pedal board order! I use a bass-Big Muff for my "regular" bass tone and a ts9 as a boost for solos and what not, as well as an MXR chorus and a bass-cry baby (the white one) for cleans and various solo-y effects. Despite this I've not been able to achieve Cliff's bass "growls" (like in call of Ktulu and seek and destroy)

I have a morley power wah fuzz from the 70s and its a monster but its very strange. I've heard that they have lots of problems and idk if anyone's old morley does this but when I engage the wah and fuzz the clean signal still comes through with the modulated signal so I run a tube screamer with the volume control down low and play a big muff after the morley and the cliff tone is unreal. The only problem with running with a rig like that is it huge and takes up so much space and switching from clean to distortion takes 4 clicks and the clean sound is way louder so you need to run the pedals through an fx loop pedal, for instance I run mine through the fx loop of a line 6 and balance the volumes so I can have the cliff tone and clean tones at similar volumes and to also be 1 button press away. I don't think the reissues of the cliff wah sound anything like cliffs tone so I like to stick to my huge heavy clunky setup I just wish that it could be way smaller like maybe new AI technology could replicate the eq sweeps of the effects and then it could be way more widely available for cliff burton fans to get the sound and also have it on a way smaller scale. Cliff made me pick up the bass and his tones are still my favourite of all time
@slumfiend6639
@slumfiend6639 Жыл бұрын
And if anyone wants to accomplish the cliff wah sound I wouldn't bother saving for a rickenbacker or finding an aria bass because the amount of distortion he uses you wouldn't be able to hear the difference in pickups I've played the pedals through all sorts of different basses and the tone is always the same :)

Amazing bass player and one of THE best for sure! Thanks to KZbin we can hear Cliff's isolated bass tracks as well as boosted bass! It's a real head (or ear) turner! The most amazing footage is the "Day on the Green" stadium show from 1985 just before they went in to record "Master of Puppets"; you can really see how much of a talented bass player Cliff was and he was all over the fretboard playing many more notes than you can hear on record. Just fantastic. "Damage Inc."? I think he may have gotten the idea from Aerosmith's "Nobody's Fault" song off the "Rocks" album; check it out, it is similar. GREAT video!
