Marcus Aurelius was one of the wisest and most intriguing humans to have ever roamed the earth. I rate him alongside the likes of Lao Tzu and the Buddha, among the very best of human beings in history. Meditations captures human nature extremely well and should be required reading for anyone looking to make a positive impression on the world.

Stoicism, Marcus Aurelius and you, Ryan Holiday-have helped me to develop a better approach to life. Stoicism helped my marriage and has given me more resilience in dealing with life’s challenges. Thanks again Ryan.

Thank you for your comment, and I have a question that is a bit nosy... Do you mind, to please share how it has helped your marriage? I like to do self improvement too, and I know that even good things can be made better.
@Fourvirtues

@@pbsamanthamarie certainly. I learned how to control my perceptions and emotions on a deeper level. Journaling, noticing my thoughts/impressions and not just reacting to them. We argue less now over minor things and can talk rationally through major things. It’s overall helped me to wrangle in my temper. We can’t always control how are spouse might handle certain things, but we can control our reactions. Stoicism has some very beneficial practices and an outlook that can really help retool the way you see things. Reading Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Seneca, Discipline is Destiny and Ego is the Enemy (along with How to Think Like a Roman Emperor), really helped. There’s strategies in the last book I mentioned that can really help you develop the mindset. Momento Mori, Amor Fati and all the other Stoic methods can help you to get the most out of your day, and help you to focus on what matters.

6:00 rub an oily rag on the pole that the bird feeder is on. The squirrels won't be able to grip it to get up. It will be fun to watch, too. Also, please be nice to them and give them their own little bowl of snacks, and put it away from the bird feeder so the squirrels have their private area that you can watch. That bird story made me laugh!

I wonder what Marcus would have done if he met my other favorite philosopher, Diogenes of Synope. I’d imagine their exchange would be so much different than it was with Alexander the Great- another emperor and leader of men in his own rights and fashions. Thank you for what you do Ryan. Such words from our ancestors are lost through all the sins we cast upon them, sometimes without fully knowing better in our modern “enlightened” era.

Stoicism may not be about superiority, but Stoics are definitely superior. We may not be perfect. We may make mistakes just like everyone else. However, it's 1000x better to be a Stoic than people who are constantly enslaved by their "needs" and desires.

Were Marcus Aurelius and Avidius Cassius “friends”? I doubt it. Cassius was critical of Aurelius’s perceived softness. He was a general feared by his troops for cruel discipline. He had Syrian kings in his family tree. No, not friends, but wary rivals. Cassius thought he had an opportunity to take over when Aurelius “died”. When Cassius realized he hadn’t died, Cassius still didn’t back down. Aurelius pardoning Cassius’s men was merciful, certainly, but it also cornered Cassius and inspired his men to save themselves by killing Cassius and surrendering. Hi Ryan. I asked Google's A.I. to write a poem based on the Stoic philosophy here it is. The Stoic I am a Stoic, I stand tall and proud, I face the world with courage, I am not afraid to be loud. I am a Stoic, I am not moved by emotion, I am not swayed by opinion, I am not controlled by my ego. I am a Stoic, I am not swayed by pleasure, I am not tempted by pain, I am not ruled by my desires. I am a Stoic, I am a master of my own mind, I am the master of my own destiny, I am the master of my own fate.

Because it's natural for them to do let them be, as Marcus Aurelius said in his Meditations “to expect a bad person not to harm others is like expecting fig trees not to secrete juice, babies not to cry, horses not to neigh the inevitable not to happen. What else could they do with that sort of character?”
