world at wars mechanics also made you feel like a vulnerable human soldier with no OP guns and stupid sliding shit or OP perks (not counting verrucks glitched juggernog) thats also what made getting the wunderwaffe so fucking epic since it was the only gun in the game just just would always one shot so many zombies, being weak and slowly becoming stronger but still risking dying in seconds if you make one wrong move is what made old zombies so fun, now you spawn in OP as fuck and can just breeze through the rounds like nothing. I think that the reason the first 2 cod waw zombie maps were so scary, is because there wasn’t any way to really “win” it’s not when will you win, but how long till you die? Knowing that death is inevitable, only getting things to delay it for awhile. Knowing you’re going up against something you cannot win against.
@aviewer7749 ай бұрын
Personally for me the reason why old zombies was so scary (and still iss the creepiest now) is because they weren't as decayed looking, allowing you too see their blank uncanny faces. Its weird seeing someone who was once able to express have a vacant unmoving look as they come full speed at you trying to kill you.
@PrototypeMaserArgo9 ай бұрын

I think a lot of the horror of Zombies was the feeling of helplessness and being trapped. I think Nacht Der Untoten and Zombir Verukt exemplify this this the best and make the player feel truly helpless. The maps also just felt a lot more claustrophobic. The other thing that made these two maps in particular feel more scary was the lack of the wise cracking playing characters, Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo and Richtophen. It was just the player, the zombies and the ambiance. I'm not saying these maps were better for having less. I think Shi no Numa and Der Riese were obviously the better maps overall, but I think Nacht and Verukt had the better horror atmosphere. And thats partially due to understanding the world around Zombies less.

@@themelancholia And yet bo4 and basically everything after bo2 has no charm whatsoever (soft spot for bo3 tho bc the gameplay felt really great) Too arcade, too colourful in a weird way, imo fighting aliens is trash, the story became boring and cliché and the thing I hate most is that newer zombies games take you by the hand SO much There's no point in saying easter eggs anymore, they're just quests, the game tells you what to do very clearly, has no storytelling it's all bluntly up in your face Back then you had to look for things, it made the community active, engaged etc

One thing I think helped carry zombies’s horror factor was its variation of horror and it being set in somewhat real locations with a sci-fi supernatural twist. Each map has its own flavor to scare you but connects well in a way, for example: Nacht is a slow build up to what will inevitably mow you down, Verruct is right off the bat trying to show off a active sense of being stressful and unnervingly bloody, “FIVE” had this liminal type horror with it being mostly clean but empty, Ascension felt like a just… disturbed place. Bo3 100% killed whatever horror factor zombies had, WWII Zombies was SOOOO close with its excellent zombie designs and atmosphere, but it misses the mark of why zombies was uniquely scary. Unfortunately I don’t think zombies will go back to it.
@PrototypeMaserArgo9 ай бұрын
@commander_eaa2862 I completely agree with you. with BO3 killing the horror factor, I was going to do a trilogy on this as I want it to go up to BO2. But what also killed the horror factor was COD going into a fast paced movement system, so they was no point in putting effort to the atmosphere as you have to constantly be moving , it's pretty bad with BO4, you can't take in the environment anymore, like these old games.

An extra reason for Verruckt being so frightening is because the asylum it's in, Wittenau Sanatorium, is a *real asylum* in Berlin, Germany, and in the present day a plaque sits at its entrance as a memorial to those who the Nazis tortured and killed in asylums like Wittenau.

World at War is still one of my favorites in this series. Has an this unique sense of tension and atmosphere that none of the games before or after can match. Zombies benefited from this greatly as it was creepy in s way I never felt after WaW. There was a haunting feeling to them and each map had a unique feeling as they experimented with different mechanics and designs in those earth days. I remember realizing in Verruckt and Shi No Numa that there was some vague semblance of lore. It was so fun back then finding all those details as time went on. Some of the favorite parts of my childhood right there. Verruckt is still one of the creepiest maps to this day. Speaking of Shi No Numa though. I remember playing my first match of it on release at like midnight without having read the description. Needless to say the dogs scared the crap out of me that night. Especially since I played on PS3 so it had extra dog round sounds that I didn’t know until recently aren’t present on Xbox and PC WaW. The radio used to creep me out as a kid too because all the radio sounds reminded me of the sounds from Aftermath in CoD4. I disagree on finding MotD scary at all. Overall find that map pretty overrated. Overall I’m happy to have grown up in this era of CoD it was an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything. I had the same sentiments towards BO2/3 zombies back then but my older self had come around to liking them. I only wish I’d appreciated them back when they were more active.

Old Zombies was scary because initially there was no storyline. You were legit just left behind on the battlefield only to find the Nazis had begun to reanimate. It was the sense of mystery and unknown that made it scary. The lack of music outside of the round changes and the easter egg songs also made it very isolated and amplified the alone/left behind feeling. The cutscene with the running zombie post credits implies this was the case.

They are very well designed don’t get me wrong, but there’s a little too much focus on grotesque body horror. The animations are what really give the zombies that unsettling feeling.

I used to agree that Mob of the Dead was scarier than Verrukt, but recently playing i came to agree to something i hadnt considered. On another video or somewhere, a user described Mob of the Dead as an overdecorated haunted house, with too many hanging bodies and blood scattered all over to have a shock effect. Almost as if the map is trying TOO hard to be scary. I have come to agree to this over the years. IMO, MotD is not as terrifying as the WaW maps. MotD lacks an ambience that brings home the scare and mystique factors. I dont hear the haunting whispering voices, cries of souls of inmates being tortured, or metal creaking. It just doesnt match that unsettling disturbance that the WaW maps capture so well. Even the wildlife of Shi No Numa frightened me. Feedback: When you are discussing anything sound related, radio logs or ambience, in the maps, i would have cut the background music for those segments, sometimes it is difficult to hear what is described because even the quiet music mumbles everything. Altogether i am looking forward to your future videos, much excite!

I preferred Nazi Zombies over Zombies, despite the latter having banger maps in the Black Ops trilogy, because it was a survival game mode with Easter eggs. Now the “Easter eggs”are just a story mode but with extra steps. It’s too over complicated. It became so convoluted, they had to give you a larger health pool just to survive. They fixed problems they made. Not to mention it made the stories convoluted. It was dinner when you had to figure it out yourself or watch theory videos explaining the possible lore through investigation. Now they pretty much tell it to you or even show you with cutscenes, often when you’re just trying to unlock PaP. It’s also why it’s less scary than WaW Nazi Zombies, because the Black Ops Zombies forced everything to the front, whereas the original was an unexpected reward (followed by DLC) and those first four maps hid their secrets in mystery for you to investigate. It made the “lore” more eerie and not some horror action movie. In short, Nazi Zombies are like Dead Space and maybe even Dead Space 2, but Zombies are Dead Space 3.

WaW Zombies is still scary! I'm 20 and it still terrifies me! Not for the same reasons though. Not because of the atmosphere and setting. But because the unpredictable movement of the zombies, and the fact that they are magnetic. They pull you in and don't let go until you're dead. Spooky stuff that zombie pathing and collision is. who knows? Maybe that added to the scary factor back then as well.

i wouldn’t want to control zombies anyway. they don’t even know anything. it’s a part of their brain that only responds to movement

The reused assets have never been a problem for me personally Sure all the maps are reused from campaign and multiplayer * (Even Shi No Numa apparently which is apparently the DLC map knee deep but I don’t see it) But if you go through them, the creators have clearly and deliberately altered the maps for plaything them out Verrukt may be be from the campaign and multiplayer, but they all play and feel different in each of their modes The base in Nacht is only alike to the one on in airfield and campaign in layout. Each of them are unique
