And produced by the late and great Jerry Finn, let's not forget. TLA absolutely took it to the stratosphere and beyond but Finn got those tones and magnificent recordings.

I watch a LOT of mixing and mastering content on YT - I own all of your courses as well. I'm not sure if you realize how unbelievably profound some of this is (at least for me). You have hammered this home on your mixing courses (which I'm beginning to think I should re-watch), but what you mentioned about the bass specifically was SO true. "Its there if you go looking for it, but its not the centerpiece or top tier instrumentation". You had always mentioned the "tiers" of attention/importance with regard to mixing (and if I remember correctly, low end as well - "there can only be one lowest instrument"). Seems like an obvious and casual thing, but I needed to hear it. I took your course a couple of years ago, and have been mixing every day since. My mixes are good, but I will admit that I have been trying to prioritize a bit of everything, especially the vocal. I think what separates the truly pro mixes in many cases, is knowing what to draw focus to - and adjusting the other elements accordingly. Leaving a comment so I can hopefully come back to this principle and not forget it in a week or two

Excellent Justin, thank you so much for your insights! I've been learning and listening like never before, at my 46, it is fascinating how I keep finding out that my favorite music (rock, metal and a lot in between) is related somehow to a group of the same engineers and producers.... Everything falls into place, like full circle. Looking forward to your courses, really soon. Greetings from a Venezuelan lost in Ecuador!!!

You didn't mention the synth that's there in the na na na section. It's not noticeable if you don't think about it. It merges with the vocal parts. But when you do notice it, you realize it makes a huge difference.

Yes, Finn produced the whole record. Tom Lord-Alge mixed most of it. But the producer usually has a substantially bigger impact than the mixer. -Justin

What makes a mix ADDICTIVE? the answer is simple: you resonate with the artistic vision as a listener. This means primarily the performances, the story telling, the arrangement, the production first, and mixing and mastering to sharpen them. But the mix is 10%, mastering is 3%. Want to become a better mixing engineer? Biggest difference you can make is to work on better productions and songs. A great arrangement screams the right decisions at you, a mediocre arrangement will remain indecisive and leave you constantly making compromises.

My favorite part of this song is how that one big guitar strum is slightly out of tune. (Both times too) And it’s flat not sharp so it’s not from pulling too hard on the strings. Idk. Maybe it’s an over-dub or something. Either way. It feels pretty punk rock.

Technical okay and great arrangement, but the song sucks. Btw Justin, if you want to see the full bitdepth on the SPL, lower your master output with 0.05db and you will see the full pattern, I'm not sure this is a bug in the plugin, but I had it too, until I lowered the master bus, with 0.05db. Very informative video, thanks!
