Have you ever wondered what makes American English sound American? If you’re studying English you’re likely hoping to become more and more fluent in spoken English. It’s not easy is it? Even if you’re an advanced/fluent English student it can be tough to master American English Pronunciation. When you are reading and writing in English it’s really not necessary to think through things like reductions, stress, and linking-these are the things that define spoken English but are tough to master. When students ask me about what makes American English sound American I always talk about these elements. And if you’re fully studying English it’s these elements-reductions, stress, linking-that you’ll need to master if you want to understand what makes American English sound American. You can absolutely improve the way you’re American English pronunciation sounds and by studying English elements specific to spoken English you’ll be on your way to sounding more and more like a native English speaker.

Rachel, I really appreciate your job. it helps a lot. I`ve been watching you for years. I`m wandering if you could resume by any chance to break down some episodes when people are speaking ebonics or a sort of afro american manner of speaking. For the non-americans those accents are hard to comprehend.Thank you from Russia with love)

I've been studied an awful lot English on my own by reading books, watching so many videos on YT from different coach/teachers and so on but sometimes I feel a little bit frustrated, specially when I heard an utterence like that: "I wouldn't have even..." spoken by natives English in a daily normal speaking. Even though I've heard this sentence a million times I couldn't have even understood it. This sentence, mostly, are being hard to me. But one thing I'm totally sure, I won't give up. Thank you for your efforts. Yours videos are a quite useful. Regards from Brazil.

I think it's great that you use the show FRIENDS as your source material for your lessons. Apart from it being very popular, it has a lot of realistic dialogue and I noticed that the actors had stronger american accents than today's generation. It's a product of it's time. Also, it's a great vehicle to teach people of other cultures about american humor.

Thanks so much Rachel! You know, in China, the English we learn is too formal! I've never been taught like this in detail of American pronunciation! I'm go a short-term study in SGP where English is everywhere. This is the first time I've been to a country whose first language is English. The way local people say is never same as what I was taught in China. I felt so much frustated and couldn't sleep well last night. Cauz I really love English and I look forward to master real English-not that kind of in China. I figure out the right way to open English is to use it every day. I sincerely hope to get encouragement from u, a big fan of u from China:)

So, I'm very interested in your academy. because I do have weekness in my spoken English. Actually, I can't even open my mouth! My mind would become empty when I want to talk in English, and I don't know why! I've clicked your website and watched the introduction, But I still have several questions about your academy: 1.will the academy help with my spoken problems(empty mind)? 2.I don't think I can completely master the sentences if I only watch Ben Franklin video once, so how should I use these videos? 3.if I join the academy, must I use a computer to learn? 4.Do you have a study progress plan for srudents? like how many lessons should I finish in a day or week, and how can I test myself to see if I'm different.

Hi Rachel, I have a grammar question about this video: Could you please tell me why did Rach use verb tense 'I wouldn't have hired me'? I think she didn't say the whole sentence, maybe I can put an if clause before her sentence to make it easier to understand. I guess I have some confusion about using ' would have + past participle'. Thank you for help in advance, by the way, this video is very helpful!
