I wanted to do a follow-up to my video about the culture of "cringey music" in the modern era, by talking about what makes music edgy in both a good way or a bad way?! Be sure to let me know down below your opinions on this topic!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

My perspective is that "edgy" is now used as a thought terminating cliche; just a way for people to dismiss something with no further thought. Even if something is genuinely "edgy," it's still worth engaging with. What is it about this music that makes me want to dismiss it out of hand? What is making this person want to create something like this?

YES. Avenged Sevenfold have some painfully edgy lyrics, but they're such amazing musicians and songwriters that it really doesn't matter. This could apply to so many different bands. I feel like people usually get hung up way too much on lyrics or aesthetics even when the actual music is amazing

I feel like a big part of what makes music “edgy” is that it’s uncomfortable in some way - be it through sound, presentation, or lyrical content. A lot of the time this is a good thing - I specifically like looking for music that’s maybe a little out of my comfort zone or different from what I’m used to, and it’s great when artists try to challenge the status quo in some way. I think the problem arises when the “edginess” starts to feel like an attention grab without any real substance or purpose to back it up. There are plenty of songs and artists that feel like they’re trying to shock/offend just for the sake of shocking/offending, and that’s the kind of edginess I don’t want to see more of.

Metal will always be amazing 🤘 no matter what. There’s some bands that are take the cringe way up but there’s some that are fun to listen to!

I think the term edgy is overused but in general it means that an individual tries too hard to be different to get a reaction from people. I can look past edginess if the music is good. When bands lack substance, a lot of them use edginess as a crutch.

Once again I will expose my age... Edgy is kind of an outdated concept IMO, when society was mostly happy looking to the future, filled with bright optimism and a complete lack of self awareness to the coming dystopian future ie the 1980s and 90s. Edgy music aka Punk, Metal, Goth, and Industrial was designed to cut societal expectations, and to cause discomfort. Skinny Puppy, Christian Death, Sui*** Tendencies, and many bands I enjoy had a way to frame how complacency leads to destruction, hate, and bigotry. Edgy music was a warning to the future, to cause the youth of that era to act and change the future. We are in that future, and my generation never did poodoo to prevent the dystopia so clearly predicted. These days, I think edgy music is less a wakeup call and more a way to be shocking. It's weird, but I would say good edgy music should be angry, the youth of today who's future was stolen by my parents generation and the billionaire class who owns everything, should let loose a scream of rage so loud it ignites a revolution of new music and action to overturn the inaction of my generation, and the theft by the billionaires. So for me edgy didn't work, but the rage fueled anger I hear in some bands today express things so much better than edgy music.

Well first of all does it have to be ? Second is it , now I mean ?? , as a kid in the 80's bringing some of this music home , well you had to sneak it in , if caught depending on your folks it could get interesting . I am sure viewers aware of the PMRC Senate hearings , or Priests subliminal message trial , and the media fascination with labeling all metal and hard rock with devil and satanic things ? Was it edgy then , I dunno we just kids , having fun , listening to or trying to listen to something other than baby , yeah yeah , or the like .., it resonated with us 14 to 17 year olds and it stuck .., I find metal now especially death or black metal that tries too hard to actually be laughable and not edgy at all ..,
