I remember his Strayhorn album being seen as his comeback (just like how State of the Tenor and One Night with Blue Note were his ‘80s comeback). But the critical response to the two subsequent “songbook” albums was more muted and mixed. It’s nice that, with the passage of time, Joe -- and this album -- gets his due.

I'm loving this series! Could you review "Oscar Peterson meets Roy Hargrove and Ralph Moore"? I'd love to hear what you think!

One album I really like by a jazz artist doing bossa (after the craze, e.g. early 60s) is Oscar Peterson's "Motions & Emotions". It's a mix of popular tunes that are bossified. Wave for me is really killer. Great arrangement by Ogerman What do you think? (Btw. Nice seeing you guys last night!)

Can we talk about Herbie's solo on Triste? Dear Lord it burns. One of my favorites of his on record.

Was about to comment this! I remember first hearing it in my car and saying “what?!?” out loud at about 2/3’s into his solo

Great post, and you once again alerted me to a fabulous album I had overlooked. I love your channel and a paid subscription is likely unavoidable soon. My playing is improving with every session I do with your free videos. THANK YOU. But, I have to disagree on the album art rating for this one. OMG this is a hot mess. It looks like a paper tray-liner at a Taco Bell, advertising Extreme Burrito Combos. Every trend of early computer layout is here - small caps fonts that aren't real small caps fonts (the capitals are just enlarged versions of the lower case characters, so they're fatter than the lower case letter, which makes them too prominent); those splashed, deconstructed graphics; the color grading on the main photo (that "extreme" thing again), and just because we can, why not vignette another gritty black and white photo on top? I'm pretty sure the art director is looking back with a teensy bit of regret - most of us who created these kinds of things are! But… this is an album so good you could have packaged it in a Glad Bag, and it'd still be a masterpiece.

Peter mentioned being shortlisted for one of the Henderson Verve dates, and that another young pianist got the nod instead. Looking over the albums, there's only one that features a pianist who isn't a legend (Herbie, Chick, Flanagan) or at least mid-to-late career, well-known artist (Eliane Elias, Ronnie Matthews), and that's the "Lush Life" CD that kicked off Henderson's Verve run. So it sounds like Peter can hold a legit grudge against Mr. Stephen Scott! (Unless it was for that one track on "Big Band" with Helio Alves, but seems unlikely.)

Good stuff, although I preferred So Near So Far, in particular his rendition of Flamenco Sketches.

Love all the different content you guys put out and like this new series of zoning in on a particular album and reviewing it. PS: Not sure if you are aware that the great pianist, George Colligan has an album coming out on 31/05/24 and he has aptly titled it: ‘You’ll Hear It’. Sure he has also taken inspiration from you guys! Keep doing what you are doing! 🙏☮️

nice to go back to this, particularly No More Blues, which just tears it up. have to disagree on cover art at best a 3 -- the bar is set wbar set so high by Reid Miles and Francis Wolf of classic blue. some of the best graphic design anywhere, any time.

Thank you for picking up “Double Rainbow”! This is one of my favorite jazz album, not only great musicians involved. Love bossa-nova touch sound and harmony, especially, Herbie‘s solo on Photograph.

Thanks guys. I think this would be even better if your categories were weighted with sound, playing, and vibe being weighted heaviest, and things like cover art very lightly weighted

Killer album too, the nice thing is its got two ensembles, a Brazilian Jazz and an American Jazz one, each honoring the compositions its honest and expressive ways, I gotta say the way they interpreted 'Triste', w/ some reharms and some harmonic rhythm alterations, the solos and the whole 'musical conversation' is really refreshing
