Dr. Phil's analysis is correct. She was always on the defense. I know she got humiliated in other portions of the show - but not in this one. She was very, very clearly hurt and let down by her father. But I will say I'm almost proud of her for rising above and using that pain to make the lives of her and her mother better. Good on her. I have a strong feeling that a huge part of Danielle’s behavior is also due to her not having the proper support when she needed it. Somewhere along the way, she tried to express her feelings and vulnerability and somebody shut her down, leaving her emotionally damaged. Hence why she refused to open up or show sentimental feelings. See here is the difference of perspective. She didn’t just become who she was at 13. She saw that behavior and developed from her environment. Low self esteem and low self worth? I saw someone unique with a special way of protecting herself that the world doesn’t understand. Everyone doesn’t fall under the labels that society puts us on as we develop the defensive mechanisms to protect ourselves from childhood trauma. She just wants people to love her and understand her and not leave her behind like her father did. And Dr. Phil saying how she should open up more is difficult to do a just day especially for a child who was abandonned and doesnt really trust adults. It takes years of trust and courage to open up to do that. Making her feel safe first and accepted for her flaw would have been a better move by the show.
