I think minimalism just means getting rid of anything that doesn't add value to your life. For example, I have a LOT of books but each adds happiness and value to my life. Its about keeping what adds to your life and removing the excess. I think it also ties in to being more mindful about buying/bringing new things in

The whole small wardrobe thing always make me feel bad about myself for enjoying fashion lol. My own closet generally fluctuates anywhere between 100-150. Most people wouldn’t consider that “minimalist” but it def is to me. It’s a number I feel very comfortable & peaceful at...plus most of the pieces are functional, intentional & versatile. It works for my lifestyle and gives me joy w/o overwhelming me. Idk why I need to feel guilty about this lol.

I agree, I live in a 4 seasons climate, and have owned 125 pieces consistently throughout my 4.5 years as a minimalist. I have capsules within this for 5 seasons (the 5th is Christmas). I wanted to get down to 100 items because it sounded cool, but I can't justify it because it's arbitrary, and everything left in my wardrobe brings me value.

Yes! My goals are to stay within my monthly budget, only purchase intentionally, and only have things that I enjoy and use. That being said, I love fashion and have A LOT of clothes. One of the reasons for this is that most of my classic pieces are good quality and I have had for many years. Everything in my closet is in good condition, fits both my body and my style, and are in the colors that suit me and work together. When I add something new, I think about it for months, and usually by waiting am able to buy it second hand. I don't really care whether I fit into the minimalistic mold. But I LOVE this channel, and it matches my goals, however you label them.

I think the extreme views of minimalism make it hard for people on the fence to adopt the thinking. I've heard from a few people "oh I could never be minimalist, I love my clothes too much", not realizing they can still love clothes and be minimalist.

Being a minimalist is a small aspect of my life. It just means that I am intentional with how I manage my inventory, and I try to keep the number low. There are so many aspects of life to manage when you have a family, pets, a house, live in four seasons, and have multiple hobbies. It is natural for someone in the prime of life to accumulate more communal things too like party supplies and camping supplies. For me, this stuff fits my lifestyle and gets used.

A big challenge to minimalist life to me is breaking the association of value based upon what I’d spent on an item. I could sell things but that takes time and I’ve found it’s best to just get it out immediately to whatever charitable organization is open that day. If it doesn’t serve me, it has to go NOW.

Love this! To me, minimalism is simply about getting rid of what isn’t working, carving away the excess. For example, some of my rooms would look minimalist (bedroom, yoga/meditation space) because I need to avoid to visual clutter for a calm environment , but others are what some might call maximalist (office, I’m looking at you!) because I need the energy and creativity around me.

This is so important for people to hear. Minimalism doesn’t have to be about the end result. It can be about the process and journey. I personally love the minimalist aesthetic but my life doesn’t look like that and I’m okay with it. I have around 20 top and bottoms and 15 handbags…. Is that excessive if handbags bring me joy in my wardrobe? I also have around 10 different haircare products but zero makeup products… because eyeliner doesn’t do it for me but leave in conditioner does! It’s about using what you love and loving what you use.

YES to everything! So well put 🙌 One of my favourite quotes is, “Simplicity is in an inner reality that results in an outward lifestyle.” It helps to reminds me of the bigger picture - that I’m not owning/buying less just for the sake of it, and minimalism is not the end goal or solution to everything - but a simple lifestyle helps me to focus on the things that I find most valuable & life-giving.

All very well said. Minimalism to me is being aware of "all" the things that I own and being very mindful of what I allow myself to bring into my home, which also translates into me being responsible for properly disposing of said items at some point. I just want freedom from having to manage so much and controlling what I can control....like myself!

I like Joshua Beckers definition of 'minimalism' best. "Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things you most value and the removal of everything that detracts from it" . It all starts with what 'I ' value ...has nothing to do with anyone else.

I just started watching and right at the beginning when you said "you have too many clothes", "this doesn't look minimalist at all". I think that ALL or most of this comes from people focusing on minimalism as an aesthetic and/or COUNTING the number of pieces one has. Some people act like if you don't have Japandi home decor or plain jane clothing (and even if you have a small NUMBER of pieces but that are very colourful, patterned, etc), means you're "not really minimalist". This to me is an ignorant and narrow-minded view of PRACTICAL (rather than aesthetic - which people are obsessed with - everything must be grey/beige/greige) minimalism. PRACTICAL minimalism to me means being mindful about what you bring into your home, consuming goods more slowly, and valuing and getting use out of what you already have - from watching your videos, you're already doing this Christina and I really enjoy your content! I'll come back and edit my comment if I have anything else I want to add after watching. :) Edit: I agreed with everything that you said. I think you touched on that minimalism is not a journey to a specific number, which SO many people still think it is. Unfortunately, like with other movements/practices, some people try to make it into a "X than thou" type of thing. I understand that sometimes people like to attach themselves to certain practices/labels without actually making an effort/doing the work (e.g. They'll talk a whole lot about certain diets that they embrace for health reasons but...they aren't really sticking to it. They just like to be associated with it.). We have been watching you on this journey though - it's not like you're just talking and not doing. I mean, at this point Christina, some people might only be satisfied once you start filming in a bare room, maybe just on your iPhone only in natural light, no makeup, no furniture (maybe they'll allow you to have a floor mat?). Sorry for the long comment but again, I really enjoy your content! Yours is the only minimalism-focused content I've been watching consistently. Also, I blame you for my newfound (but low-key) obsession with Anine Bing. I signed up for the mailing list LOL.

I agree with this SO MUCH! I used to be that person who would subscribe to all the minimalism creators, only to find myself getting bored with them after a while. I find that most minimalism KZbinrs post the same content over and over again to where it becomes trite and like a lecture to piggy back off of what you were saying. Christina is one of the few minimalism creators who has never given off that impression

To me, minimalism isn't having the same wardrobe forever. After several decluttering cycles during quarantine last year, I was able to curate a wardrobe of cohesive pieces that all work together. Now that I've been wearing every piece several times for the last 7 months I can feel myself getting bored because I love fashion and keeping things interesting. I think it's totally okay to have a revolving wardrobe for different seasons and moods and even bring a couple of interesting items in from time to time. I find the one in one out rule helps a ton with keeping myself in check!

Excellent conversation about minimalism. When I first started on the minimalism path (with just my clothing), I got rid of a ton of stuff based on the rules and suggestions ... such as getting rid of any duplicates (which were only duplicates based on same items, but in different colors). Purchased items so all colors would match and the styles suggested. Bleh .... really not me. I had to start over by figuring out my reality of who I am and what I actually wear. My wardrobe at one point had grey, white, black, beige. I stood in my closet one day and was so bored and decided I need some color. I figured out I don't need to live with only 33 items and that I can have duplicates in the same and different colors when I really love the item and wear it all the time! It's definitely been a journey and a process and that will continue.

A lot of what you've shared is something that I can resonate with. I know that at one point in time during my journey, I got stuck inside this comparison trap, and other times, I was thinking too much about the decluttering process itself. For me minimalism translates into my life as intentional living. Think twice about what I being (clothes, books makeup, groceries plastic, etc.) in to my life and space. Find ways to help the environment and nurture my well being. I try and avoid buying plastic, even when I plan to buy makeup, I’ll rather go to the store vs having another package come in to my home. Instead of buying new plants I learned how to propagate the plants I already have. I’ve learned so much from you, and you’ve made me think about my choices and purchases before I go through with them. Thanks Christina.

For me, minimalism is about saving time and energy. A living room with lots of negative space, some plants, but no nick nacks or rugs is practical with a dog and a cat - easy to clean. A kitchen with clear counter tops is super quick and easy to clean. As an aside, I like the way it looks, and it makes me feel calm, but it's done with a view to function and practicality. Like you say, different for everyone. And with regard to clothing, whilst the number itself is not important, I have found that having a rough target has helped with recognising what I don't need, or love, or use, and helping me to declutter items that I love aesthetically, but don't like to wear. Another great video, and very slick editing -thank you. I hope your continuing Toronto lockdown is going ok. Love from Cornwall UK x

the beauty of minimalism is that everyone has their own unique definitions for it. and LOL at the biceps. Matt's biceps are not very minimalist though 😂

I realise I am a true minimalist. And I can remember when I started becoming one. If something has no value in my life or in my home, it has to go.

The hyper-consumer culture has created this Overton-window, where people have redefined minimalism as middle-ground between average consumer behaviour and actual minimalism. If having 50 t-shirts is your normal level, 25 t-shirts would feel minimalist to you but it isn't actually minimalist.

I'm on my Minimalist journey, but I love my spices, seasonings and fully stocked kitchen. I like my black and Ivory clothing palette, but out of 14 t-shirt that i own 100% of them are graphic design. When I decided to begin my journey i decided to be intentional about my lifestyle regardless of how it looks to others and i have myself a HUGE no touch area. Dog toys. My pup didn't choose minimalism so she keeps all her toys so long as I can wash the dirt, grimme and stink. If they break they gone and no new toys unless is grooming day (the reward for doing what she hates the most on this world) which happens, maybe 3 times per year

I embrace some aspects of minimalism, like being mindful with my spendings. I was never a collector of stuff and I prefer owning less but higher quality that will last for a long time. I spend more on travel and cultural events which nourish my soul, my knowledge and open my mind.

I really hate having to have 2 different profiles of myself. I see who I want to be in my head( easy t-shirt, jeans, minimal makeup and jewelry) but the work me can't look like that. I'm not complaining. Just saying! Loved this video.

I looove extreme minimalism! But I’m a minimalist. I don’t have excess but I love the idea of even less. Like Fumio. Love that idea!

I have moved 5 times in 5 years each time I downsized. I am an aspiring minimalist. I began with a fairly uncluttered 1 bedroom flat. I now live in a single room. Unfortunately It still means it is very cramped. The local charity shop has got at least 15 bags of household and other items. People own more than they think.

I doubt I would be considered as looking like a minimalist as I like books, arts and crafts and recently bought a lot of hair products (when I should, of course, have only one!!!). However, I also decluttered my books from 1100 down to 300, sold half my fabric stash, gave away 75% or more of my stationery etc, so I call myself a lot more minimalist than I used to be. If someone else who has no connection with or impact on my life disagrees, that's too bad - for them! ;)

a style or technique (as in music, literature, or design) that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity. That’s the official definition. Ten years ago I started exploring minimalism but found it to be a little contrived for my lifestyle. So I lean more toward seeking simplicity, KIS and the opposite law:the more you strive the less you achieve. The Buddhist concept of the middle way is a realistic compromise. But you have to call it want feels right for you.

Great video! I feel I’m leaning towards “mediumism”. I want to have things in my life, but I want them to be things I use. I’ve realized during the pandemic that many of my habits and hobbies (like shopping) just weren’t good for me. So I’m looking for things that are good for me and buying what I need to achieve them. For example, working out in VR makes me feel great, so if I work out and get sweaty everyday, then having enough sports bras to support that hobby makes sense to me.
