My only advice as someone who is older is declutter slowly. There are so many things I’ve decluttered that I would pay ten times the amount to get back. In the spring our daughter quarantined with us. We pulled out and used beautiful tablecloths, crystal etc that had been handed down to me and I was going to sell. Now, every so often I pull these things out usually when our daughter visits. They make ordinary occasions seem extraordinary. Instead of decluttering, I do declutter but very deliberately, I make myself use or wear things I might have gotten rid of. I have become more cautious about what I bring in and I’ve identified what I do and don’t like and why. If I buy it I have to use it like it or not.
@susie5101
@susie5101 3 жыл бұрын
I have the same issue, so I started using it or losing it. I found that I was of the "save it for a special occasion" mentality. So my lovely things were just gathering dust. If I put it on and don't want to wear it, or get out an item and don't want to use it, I donate it. I know selling things would help me recoup some of my money, but it's too tempting to just keep them if they don't sell.

If it sparks joy, you keep it. Joy, not something else dressed up as joy by our minds. I see a lot of ppl commit to the Konmari approach to decluttering, and then try to make joy, out of many of the things CM discussed here in this vid. Especially with items they’d totally forgotten. You don’t need to justify joy.

We did the 30 day declutter this January (and made mediocre videos on KZbin to keep ourselves accountable haha) and honestly the hardest part was just feeling the "waste guilt"...so much stuff we should never have bought that we not only spent money on, but those items took resources, some of which went to landfill and for "stuff" we didnt even truly need 😥 Pledging to do better and try a serious no-buy going forward...love your channel, it's great motivation!

I really love these insights you shared! One of the biggest lessons I learned from another KZbin channel (A Small Wardrobe) is that most stuff loses its monetary value the longer we keep it. If we're holding onto things that no longer serve us or no longer bring us joy, then the value of that item will continue to deplete and it'll just take up space. This has helped me put the idea of stuff owning us in a whole new perspective. Stuff shouldn't own us or be an extension of our identity; we should be the owner and decision maker of what we allow into our lives :)

100% guilty of the “so nice” comment. All. Day. Long. I have heard my mom say it so many times in my childhood when we would go through our things for a garage sale. And now I find myself doing it as an adult! Now my sweet mother is battling a huge basement full of things she spends an inordinate amount of time decluttering in her retirement. We are learning together to unlearn these behaviors!

I've decluttered so much over the years and continue to do so on a regular basis. I've actually found it pretty easy to get rid of the "expensive" stuff because the resale value has been decent. I think what I struggle with most are "cool but useless" items like tiny vintage bags that fit NOTHING inside but are just sooo cute even to look at so I've actually started using them as home decor and they bring me joy that way.

One thing that made it way easier for me to let go of my clothes specifically is giving them to mutual aid organizations! It changed the question of keeping something from 'will I ever wear this again?' to which the answer is a wishy-washy 'probably', into 'would someone else be happier to have this than me?' to which the answer is YES and made me excited to put it in the hands of a new person.

Some of the items I let go today, the style was 1) outdated, not my style as I'm not in young 20s 2) clothes I'm not wearing for 5-10 years! I let go of them finally. Though their quality was perfectly fine, I knew I would never wear them. I'm leaving maybes but I should let go of old items that I don't like so much... Decluttering is surprisingly hard. I had to do it because I moved into a smaller place. I'll admit even in my big place the amount of stuff i was gathering was starting to agitate me, so when I first started purging it was kind of easy but i felt a lot of guilt about how wasteful i had been, it's almost a bit embarrassing that i did that, because before I moved into a big house, i never really had a lot of stuff. Anyway, Now I'm living in a unit, and even though I hope to get into a proper house again someday when circumstances allow, i decided to use this unit space as a benchmark to be realistic about what i need so I'm still decluttering. I really had to think about what brings me joy and what is there because it's just ok. The main places I've had to adjust my thinking on is the kitchen and my closet. I don't know if my goal is minimalism as it is portrayed on KZbin but it definitely feels better being rid of all that stuff and I need to make sure i don't do that again.

Thanks for your video! I move from country to country every few years, thanks to my God-given mission. As a minimalist, I always downsize my belongings to a couple of suitcases, before next move. Having lived already for 3,5 years in the same place, I am surprised again how much stuff I have collected, although I am living in a furnished apartment. Fortunately, I still have plenty of time, to go through my things. This time, I have started listing down my belongings, using different subcategories, like "books", "clothes", "dishware" etc. It actually helps me a lot, to make decisions, which things I will take with me for sure and which I won´t.

I had a really hard time letting go of some of my books. I re-visited them week after week. The "will I read this again?" question helped, but some books I will keep whether I re-read them or not, other books I wasn't sure, and others still, were books that I so enjoyed that just looking at them made me nostalgic. But was that a good reason to keep them on my shelf? Then I thought, "well, would I be willing to read this as an ebook?" If my answer was yes, then I'd declutter the actual book. I'm not sure replacing a book with an ebook counts as decluttering, but it has cleared up a large swath of my bookcase.

The expensive items are definitely a big one for me, as are pieces that were given to me as a gift or that were bought for me because they thought I'd love it or that it was a staple I needed to have (looking at you, black trousers and white button ups!). But the hardest one are clothes I used to love. Like shirts that have fallen out of the rotation or jeans I wore all the time and don't anymore. They always have so many good memories attached, but they don't fit my style anymore (usually because it's a cut I preferred and now don't like on me), and I end up having a lot of trouble letting go of it. My closet is full of clothes I used to love and never wear anymore. But I can't bring myself to give them away. It's very difficult.

Yes! When you said the item you forgot in your closet, you won't think about it when it's decluttered either I was like damn that is too true! I've abandonned the idea of a capsule wardrobe because I wear a ton of colour so I have a lot of items in very different colours (but the same scheme so my blues, burgundys, mustards, purples, greens... all go together :D). But the more time passes and the more I let go of things that are perfect but ONLY if I go to a party, or things that are the basics that everyone should have but that I litteraly never choose out of my options (like the small black dress that every woman should have :o) Also decluttering gets easier the more you do it so i'm better at it now than I was 5 years ago (including for not attaching too much feeling to a piece of clothing, a thing

I never had expensive items, almost everything I own is second hand or from a thrift store. I was able to declutter most possessions pretty easily as I don't get sentimental about clothing or housewares, etc. My issue has been getting rid of things in an ethical manner so I am not adding to landfills. The nearest thrift store is a 2 hour drive away & under our current lockdown.... I have given away as much as possible. I own very little....and yet I still find myself looking for things that I can let go of. I own 40 clothing pieces and a kitchen place setting for 4. We have a total of 11 furniture items in our entire house. We have very little tech (phones & 1 laptop). I would like to declutter further, but my husband is uncomfortable decluttering further, so I have slowed to give him time to adjust.

The way I declutter name brand expensive stuff is to give them as gifts to my best friend and mother in law. As a minimalist, I didn't want any purses etc. that show what brand I was wearing/carrying. Now I only buy items that don't display the brand, my only purse is from Banana Republic now and it has no logos on the outside. I think our value comes from the way we carry ourselves.

I had a hard time with this too because the pandemic means we use less items in our daily life (work clothes etc). I am afraid of seller's remorse later if I sell something that I actually would need in post pandemic time.

one note i will give: sometimes you need occasion pieces! for example, i dont wear my white button ups ever, except during the jewish holidays where since im in syhagogue for sometime multiple days, i need two nice shirts to wear. dont feel guilty about this!

I really struggle getting rid of things I picked up traveling years ago. I never buy touristy/trinkety things when I travel, mainly art/wall hangings/pottery. So as my style evolves, I find that I don't want to display them but I also can't get rid of them. Same thing goes for anything I buy from antique stores. I'm working on letting go of them, because what's the point of keeping it in a box??

For me it’s not so much how much I’ve already spent on the item, but it’s “is it worth storing for a bit until I can potentially use it? Or is it better to declutter it and perhaps repurchase if needed in the future?” . I say this as a new mom of a ten month old, who is currently 6 month pregnant with my second. It’s hard to see my old clothes and think of fitting into them anytime soon, so I want to purge them (especially as I get in nesting mode), but I know that I will need/want them by this time next year and be annoyed I didn’t keep stuff. But in the meantime, clutter and things I’m not using regularly take up space and it makes me nuts sometimes! Edit: all this to say, I think “where you’re at in life/where you think you will be in a year” should be considered when decluttering, but in a way that isn’t focused on your “fantasy self”, but rather a realistic projection of your near future

Do inside/outside sports, stretching, dancing, read books (some e books are even free, some classics), do research, watch documentaries, write down goals and try to achieve them, create art (writing, painting, sewing, songs, videos, movies...), DIY things (foods, your own recycled paper, your own inside garden...) and try to find a new job or side hustle, indulge in self-care... There are so many things. ❤️

I have no problem getting rid off sentimental items and gifts bcos I just don't care anymore as I get older. none of that matters. they're mostly coming from bad memories oopps lol. i even sold gifts I got from my friend, so free money 😂 however I have a huge problem while letting go expensive items cos first of all I spend on my hard earn money for that. I wanna get at least half of what I paid. that's why every time I purchased something nowadays, I would ask myself if this can be sold in future?

Honestly, I think a lot of my hoarding tendencies came from growing up in the lower socio-economic end of things. When you have less you try to hold on to more "just in case" because then you don't have to spend that money at a later time. Unfortunately, even after you clearly have more than enough and are no longer struggling financially, these habits of "waste not want not" turn into piles of junk and 20 extra pairs of pants you never wear.

I feel this is actually a more sustainable way. The populist movement of minimalism is actually creating waste in our landfills as people are on a decluttering frenzy. Which defeats the whole point of being minimal. I think balance is the key along with being mindful of our landfills and the waste we are creating.
