Some years ago, on my first visit to the U.K., I was invited to dine at a tony London restaurant with my sister and brother-in-law, who had been living in England at the time. I should begin by saying that my brother-in-law is a Brit (well, English really) and that we’d been joined that evening by both of his parents. After we finished the meal my brother-in-law’s father ordered a round of brandy for the table, and when the drinks arrived his mother reached into her purse and withdrew a very thin cigar (which I later learned was laced with a little marijuana) and proceeded to light up. She was apparently very fond of this “special,” Jamaican-style of cigarillo and would order them by the case-load. Well, not a minute later, we heard some audible grumblings coming from the table adjacent to ours. Without ever breaking the serene smile that had been plastered across her face throughout the evening, his mother leaned back in her chair and turned her head ever so slightly to address our indignant neighbors. “Is the smoke from my cigar bothering you?” she asked, to which, they all vigorously nodded and grunted in unison. “I’m so terribly sorry,” she then announced, “but I’m enjoying it far too much to put it out.” at which she abruptly turned back to our table and continued to suck on her noisome cigar. Well, I nearly spat up my cognac. While I was admittedly beyond amused, I do remember thinking at the time that any American would have quickly apologized and stubbed out the offending cigar. But not so here. To paraphrase the ever-naive Dorothy Gale - of whom I am very much a friend - I was no longer in Kansa but more certainly among a very different breed of people.
