My Subaru is a 2015 Forester, and I love it. It is my only vehicle. I drive it around town, in big cities, and I feel perfectly comfortable driving it to my campsites in National Forests. I hope it doesn’t make it seem less “badass” that I am a 74 year old woman.

I had a young fella in a car park point to my car (lifted ob on at's with roof basket and awning etc)and say "if you're going to do that, you should have bought a 4wd" I looked at his lowered family sedan on expensive rims and tyres with an exhaust and replied "if you're going to do that, you should have bought a sports car" You could see his brain trying to process it for a minute before he grunted and unlocked his car. Not sure if he got my point or not. Point is, we all pick our cars for whatever reason. I modified my outback coz we already owned it and it still works great. Drive what you like, let others do the same.

Part of the fun is doing something different and making a vehicle do exactly what you want it to do. I had a lowered Jeep, now that gets some weird looks. Of course there is a point where you are essentially redoing so much of a vehicle that you would definitely be money ahead to buy something closer to what you want from the factory.

@@piotrbarnowski2443 hey mate, nah it's AWD. Technically all 4 wheels are being driven all the time, but the way power and torque are delivered are different than that of a 4wd system. Basically awd is for traction, stability and safety, 4wd is for offroading. If you need a technical explanation, there are some good videos on yt about it.

I do all of this in my crosstrek as well. If I wanted to do serious rock crawling or deep mud I might consider a jeep but for what I like to do my crosstrek works just fine.

I drive a stock '15 crosstrek, my fil drives a stock '97 landcruiser. We took my car out on a fishing trip through some pretty gnarly terrains, he was pretty impressed by what my little car can do. The flat and higher undercarriage was also very beneficial.

Yeah they can handle quite a bit I had to climb a 4ft embankment in mine due to the trail being washed out and she did great. I have an '18 crosstrek with a 2"lift and bfg k02s.

No stock jeep will do serious mud or rocks without modifications. The jeep guys say jeep stands for just empty every pocket (of cash) because once you start modding and offroading things are going to break a lot. There is also a reason that most of the PNW guys run toyota rigs - reliability and excellent 4wd. You just don't want to be in back country driving anything that is going to break and leave you stranded until someone finds you.

Let me see... 2020 Subaru Forester MSRP approximately $24,500 up to $32,000 for a Limited 2020 Jeep Wrangler Sport 2 door MSRP approximately $28,300 up to $42,300 for a Rubicon Even with the addition of the lift, wheels and tires, and any additional skid plating, you're still likely coming out ahead. For the average person that extra money gets you a vehicle that isn't as comfortable and gets worse fuel mileage, among other things. So, you spend more initially, then spend more along the way to get a vehicle that doesn't suit your daily needs as well, and is overbuilt for what you actually do when exploring/overlanding. I've had three Jeeps and right now drive a Tundra (we've had several Subies in the family, and my next vehicle will likely be a Subaru). I think I can safely say that if you're off-roading warrants a Jeep, or if you just want one, buy one. We should be promoting and encouraging everyone who wants to get safely and appropriately into the backcountry, regardless of the vehicle they drive, so long as they understand its limitations. If you feel threatened by someone in a Subaru or other crossover, maybe it's your problem, not theirs.

I have nothing against Jeeps, not in the least. On the contrary, give me the keys to a Jeep and a year's supply of gasoline and that Subaru's gonna sit and do nothing for a year, LOL. I own a Subaru but I follow a number of Jeep and other 4x4 channels. :-) My only issue is with people casting judgment on what anyone else chooses to drive. I’m thinking of doing some soft overlanding. I own a Subaru Outback. From looking at videos on KZbin what I have learned is 1. Know the capability of your vehicle (you clearly defined that through this video) 2. Overlanding is about the destination and the art of enjoying the outdoors as you do it. 3. The current crossover / SUV that you have is sufficient to get started. As if your requirements don’t exceed the capability of the vehicle, why do you need something else. I enjoy your videos thoroughly. We need more content on Subaru overlanding. Thanks for doing what you do!

Yeah I hear you but they're out there getting damaged when they do that over and over LOL I look at it this way if they really want to go off-roading without the risk of scraping and messing things up why not just have a real 4 x 4? I mean there's never been a time where you're thinking darn I wish I wasn't in this Jeep because the Subaru would have been better at this or that LOL I mean unless you're on the street but in that case then an economy car or luxury car would be even better. I drive a 2000 Land Rover Discovery 2, front and rear solid axles traction control 2 inch lift on 33s and you never see that in America hardly. Yeah all over the UK there like Jeep Cherokees around here. But seriously if I'm just being honest and not even trying to sound like a bully I just don't get why someone would take something less capable and more likely to get damaged down rough dirt roads that slowly turn into random high-clearance trails and try to do it or have to turn around when they could have just drove something there that can haul more cargo and do more

@@ronaldrrootiii6040 I get what you are saying, but at the same time why bring more vehicle to a trail than you need? Its much more gratifying to push a vehicle to the limit making it down the trail then just walking over all the obstacles in a big, lifted truck on 35s. I own a softroader myself (92 toyota carib) and even in its stock form on some bigger mud tires I can make it down 90% of the trails where I live. And lets be honest, to get to these offroading spots in the first place you normally need to drive on pavement for several hours, often on some quite nice twisty roads. Thats much more fun in a car based softroader than any 'real' 4x4. And when you get there, you can still make it to the end of the trail (if with some difficulty!) and the trail itself is more enjoyable because of the challenge. Not to mention the conversation starter it is when a bewildered 4wheeler spots you out in the middle of the whoop whoops in your Frankenstein 4x4 car With regards to damaging your vehicle, its nothing a lift, a set of skidplates and some common sense cant deal with. No more risky then pushing a proper 4x4 on a tougher track, and the parts are way cheaper if you do break something

Oh and I should add that softroaders are as good if not better than real 4x4s on the beach. With a low cog and only 1100 kg to drag along, once youve aired down you skip over the sand no problem, and recovery when you do get stuck is far easier since you arent trying to push/dig/winch/tow a 2200kg disco, or whatever it is out

As an avid Subaru guy that follows y.t. channels that have “off road” content -there’s almost always a Jeep or 4 runner person in the comment section. With their arms folded, sternly looking down: “you SHOULD NOT being going off-road with that vehicle!” I get there is a line or grey area of off-road difficulty...when a crossover starts going to far into the world off a true off-roader.. As a Subaru driver, you just have to know your limits..

I think it's all about compromise. I recently bought an Outback. I'm not going to go rock climbing in it. It's not built for that. Going off into the woods on old forest roads that my old Civic might not have been able to do is a nice advantage. Actually - That's probably the key bit for me: Going off into the woods on ill-kept roads that I otherwise wouldn't be able to drive on is nice. I get to go exploring. For me, I'm really not interested in rock climbing, having a spotter, and all that. I just want a little more than a highway car but, at the same time, I want a nice highway car. That's where the Outback comes in. Just to make sure I don't ruffle any feathers: I completely get why some want to take their Jeeps/other vehicles out and do rock climbing with spotters. I enjoy those videos. If I were into it (and maybe one day I may be) then I'd go the Jeep or similar route, too.

Drive whatever you want, so long as it accomplishes those two goals. If you're traveling to offroad, then you prioritize offroading. If you offroad sometimes because you want to travel, then you prioritize whatever makes that possible.

I had a 1981 Subaru hatchback ... factory equipped with white wagon wheels, manually adjustable height suspension and a dual range 4x4 system wth a proper lever between the seats. Made skid plates and rear diff protector in my HS shop... gave all the Jeep and pickup crowd fits when the little bastard out climbed them on hills. Loved that thing..

The body attaches to the frame and, while it does provide structural support, the body is not as significant to the structure as it is in a unibody vehicle. As sergeant slaughter pointed out Subaru’s have the best have the best all wheel drive system’s in the world. They are very reliable get more then decent gas mileage considering it’s all wheel drive , not to mention it’s your daily driver while Jeeps are great. We took our '23 Forester Wilderness 4 wheeling a couple days ago. Scraped the skid plates, got it covered in mud and sand, my wife pinstriped both sides. It was great fun, and all the jeepers and SxS drivers had their jaw hanging open lol. It's only got 6k miles on it!

Loved these clips. We got into Subarus in the early 1980s going to Fraser Island for the same reasons, cheaper to buy & run, more comfortable, a lot more capable then people think. Subaru has definitely enjoyed it's own special niche of offroad capable crossover. Mitsubishi's S-AWC in the Evolution is incredible system but it's in a vehicle that has always been 40 grand. The latest offerings from Toyota and Kia have vastly improved but still not quite as good as a Subaru. Haldex version 5 has at least matched Subaru. GKN and Honda twin clutch rear differential AWD systems are very advanced. GKN equipped vehicles are expensive tho! While iVTM4 is available starting at $33k.

Comparing Subaru AWD to a 4x4 system is stretching it. Apples to Oranges! But comparing to other AWD systems - it’s a slam dunk, Subaru really is the best. I burn through company cars every 6 months/ 70k miles. I’ve tried them all, but my current vehicle is a 2019 Subaru Outback limited 2.5 with Blizzack studless winter tires. I was driving up to Sun Valley, ID at 4:30 AM this morning on Hwy 22 in blizzard conditions: 15-20 ft. visibility, 40 mph side wind, and 5-6 inches of standing snow. Going at a safe speed, I was completely safe and in control. Man, I love my Subaru. I think I’m gonna buy out the company lease when it’s time to turn it in.

I live in Vancouver, BC so also out exploring the PNW and so far, the biggest obstacle that has stopped me have been the ditches on decommissioned FSRs when the culverts are removed. There simply isn't a lot of room to work with. I'm considering an outback (which compared to forester has longer wheelbase and probably worse approach/departure angles) but any thoughts on getting through "ditches" vs a more off-road oriented vehicle? I am definitely pavement driving 95% of the time, but also regularly explore forestry roads for camping or remote trail access, and ideally I don't want to be stopped in my tracks!

Liked before I even finished watching it! we all know these videos are always good :) flexing is overrated and 3wheel subaru drive is the future! lol I absolutely agree that you can still explore the backcountry without having to buy a jeep. 90% of the time you arn't rock crawling or doing extreme trails just to get the nicest view or to reach an area to be able to enjoy the outdoors. Most offroad scenic trails are light to moderately difficult. The subaru's stock come with enough ground clearance for most light duty trails. And if you meet something more challenging you can always give the subaru a bit of lift and some good all terrains and youll be doing 90% of the trails :) I also agree with Bruceyyyy "Yes a low range, frame, two solid axles, and a locker is more capable. But I don't need that to drive on a dirt road." FAVORITE QUOTE OF ALL TIME!!!!!! "Yea if I had a jeep I could go drive all of that stuff you just saw with no problem, wouldn't even have to think twice about it. The part of what makes this especially enjoyable is the challenge of doing it in a vehicle that is not necessarily what it is designed to do"

I have a 2010 Forester and I have also owned a 1989 Jeep Wrangler. The only thing I miss about the Wrangler is having the top and doors off. I have taken the Forester everywhere I have taken the Jeep and more. The Subaru is a very capable vehicle .

Its a perfect daily car for people who do outdoors. Nice video! I just found your channel through Primal Outdoors. Totally agree with you. My current rig is a 1993 Ford E-150 conversion van that has been converted into a camper van - everything in an RV except a shower. My previous rig was a 2003 Chrysler Town & Country minivan. The minivan had aggressive-tread street tires while the E-150 has a light off-road tire and 2" lift in the rear. Since I travel full-time in my van I need to balance a lot of things, including off-road capability to explore and camp in the wilderness - but off-road access is only one component, and I am not interested in rock climbing or mudding. My minivan took me nearly everywhere I wanted to go - including up 4x4 trails like Hurrah Pass in Moab. My E-150 is a complete beast with the off-road tires and, as I frequently tell people, will happily take me down roads/trails that I don't even want to be on! LOL The right vehicle is the one that best meets your overall needs. Thanks for sharing :)

The ride " EVERYWHERE " is what's important !! Subaru is comfortable, quiet, reliable, economical.. My 2014 Forester has done a fair amount of off highway / forest roads in the NW . Good A/T tires , skid plates, rock sliders , and basic recovery gear is all that's needed really .

Subis are an excellent choice and a great combo of capability and reliability that Jeeps don't give, "cool factor" and rock crawling aside. For the roads you described at the end, that are very manageable, you don't need a Jeep. Plus, your Subi got some of the badass flair with the tires and all :) great jog!

First I want to say that I really like the videos you make. I am a Subaru lover, I have one (Impreza 1997) and my next project is to acquire a Forester and install a 2 "lift kit (actually manufacture, because here in Brazil it is impossible to import the Kit). I am inspired by your Subaru, including I will ask for some tips when I go to assemble My idea is to take a walk with my daughter and wife, explore alternative places, take her to get to know nature up close. Great video 👍 I have a ton of respect for people who wheel Subarus. I recently bought one for my wife to drive (same gen Forester as yours) and I will say I like it very much. It won't replace my Jeep but I definitely understand why people choose them for the purposes you illustrated here. They are great on dirt roads and rough trails but the lack of flex seems to be their achilles heel. If you are traversing a lot of uneven terrain (gullies, rocks or deep washouts ECT) then the solid axles rule but for cruising dirt trails and forest roads, the great AWD system, independent suspension and good ground clearance of the Subaru make it a great choice.

Indeed, there's frustratingly little flex to these cars and it's really only thanks to the traction control system braking the lifted spinning wheels that I am able to surmount some of these rutted spots. The advantages of solid axles is clear. Fortunately, those seriously rutted segments are few and far between in all the exploring I've done around Oregon, so I get by. If someone was dealing with terrain like that a higher percentage of the time, it would get old fast and investing in a 4x4 would start to make more sense for sure. With a Jeep and a Forester in the family, you guys are well set up for whatever the need may be. Thanks for watching!

I had driven quite a few cars on "back country" roads before I bought my 2013 Crosstrek. These days I still use it (stock), because it is featured the best for my need. Should it be rain, snow, dust, mud, it takes me where I need to. Our woodland tracks are narrow, so the size is perfect (the only reason why not a Forester). On our rocky roads its high ground clearance is a must. With decent tires its AWD gets out from quite incredible swamps. On the other hand it does the job on many-hundred mile snowy motorways - and it does it swiftly. And it still looks like new without much ado. A well built machine with modesty. I appreciate performance cars, and the obsession to upgrade them (I am not free of it myself) but I could not imagine a better car for my lifestyle. Thanks for the video. Done a great job. I think you've just hit the nail by the head.

Great Video Donald! I was just going to release a similar video "preparing for the Mojave road". As you know from my recent Instagram posts, I've just completed the 130 mile Mojave road. It was me in my Honda Passport and my friend in a 2005 Baja XT with slightly taller All-terrain tires, no lift but skid plates, factory LSD (still working). We came out here to "Overland", and while off-roading is part of overlanding, it's not part of the overlanding mindset, which is to explore, experience, and develop self sufficiency.

Exactly...offroad "obstacles" are just one element (and usually a rare one at that) of the greater journey and experience. I mean, it's telling that I could boil a year and half's worth of the most "off-road-y" segments down to under 10 minutes...out of countless hours and hours driving in the backcountry. I'm honestly happiest when I can do miles on nice soft dirt and just enjoy the wilderness scenery without chunky stuff getting in my way. That said, the occasional challenge keeps it fun and interesting. :-) Can't wait to see the Mojave road video(s)!

I have a "true" 4x4 with low range and a rear locker. Know how many times ive used the locker? 0!! My truck isn't all that comfortable and really its the mpgs the keep me from getting out and exploring. So, i think the crossovers do good enough and jdz has me looking really closely at the passport. Love the videos!

I have a 1500 (interstate) mile trip to the mountains. Once there, I feel good about my Subaru getting me around in the snow and I also have a very comfortable drive all the way there. Not to mention about 33 mpg. Nothing really against jeeps but I can't imagine driving a Jeep that far.

Love your videos and after watching so many I gotten myself a forester about a month ago, Subaru are great cars that does very good off roads plus very comfortable and great gas mileage. People I know who owns jeeps hates the ride of their Jeep not comfortable back breaking and gas sucks! The amount of actually off road very little on their Jeep and most of the time it’s on a trailer till destination. Subaru is perfect for everyday driving and off road, keep doing what you do that’s why I watch your videos and not crazy rock crawling Jeep videos.

I couldn't agree more with you! Having had an '83 CJ7, '94 Toyota Pickup (4x4, pre-Tacoma), '98 Jeep TJ, a '98 Dodge Durango... I've also had my share of Honda Civic and Ford Fusion. Crosstrek is much closer to Jeeps than Civic for off pavement capabilities, but on pavement benefits of the passenger vehicles. A happy blend for my likes and interests. I'd been looking at a Crosstrek for a while and couldn't be happier... The fact that you can accessorize and get more capable vehicle than OEM is gratifying. Get out there!!

AWD is an offroad vehicle. I love my 2020 RAV4 it has been on AZ rocky hills to NC sandy beachs. Never a problem. I have passed many trucks and jeeps that were stuck. So with my RAV4 I get to offroad and get 45mpg on road trips. It is an all gas RAV4. It does not matter if it looks like @12:08 or @12:14 A 4x4 or a AWD will take you thru them and get you to the other side. I have a RAV4 and it is great for offroading. Keep that camera rolling.

Your Subie is doing absolutely fine for the places you are exploring. The AWD system on a Subie is in fact quite capable really. If you are rolling a Jeep, your channel will not be called "Soft" roading the west anymore! It'll be just another Jeep offroading channel. I owned a Jeep prior to buying my 2016 Subaru Outback and I had nothing but mechanical issues with that junker. When I got my Outback I loved the fuel economy and the ability to go wherever I want to go and the fact that they are so reliable and mechanically sound. Have an 09 NA forester manual. I entirely think the reason I got a forester for offroading was because its handled most of what I do anyway as a stock vehicle. Out of 9 years owning, only the last 2 have been offroad upgrades and even rebuilding the engine to fix the common SH problems. Fast forward to today after a decent sheet of accessories found their way on my car, and Im still doing mods to it. I think its more about the fascination rather than whether or not its 4x4 capable or not, and I do believe you can make these offroad some of the intense 4x4ing that you can get, and really it all just comes down to the mods. If i put 15-20k (AUD) back into my car for offroading I have to justify that its cheaper than running a 4x4 for the same purpose of 4x4ing terrain that i can do, and that the insurance is matched up to that of an enthusiast build, or you can just full send it and not worry about the battle damage. Awesome in sand and dirt/gravel trails if only modded to the basic builds like tyres and bash plate, but further into the builds you can definitely put on air lockers and heavier centre differentials, higher lifts, coilover strut packages, snorkels, winches, lower gear ratios designed from earlier models, and I guess you have to pick what really stayed as a subaru forester when you have a very capable mini 4x4 that uses 3-4L less per 100km to do similar of what 4x4s do. The only thing JEEPs get recommended for is that of their front lockers. Subaru you can rear diff lock, centre lock or use 20, 30, or 40kg centre diffs, and partial lock the front with Cusco LSD diffs. You can definitely get very close to 4x4 capable, and the reason you should pick a forester or a Jeep just highly depends on your preferences for off road. I dont go rock crawling or through mud crawler types of BS, so ive never needed front lockers, although I found a forester investment enough to bring low range to 1.59, 2mill diff oil rear vlsd, and 1mil centre diff (20kgs), and that handles 90 percent of what i throw at it. Next is a snorkel and taller tyres.

I enjoyed watching you go to the extreme in your Subaru Forester. You are not the first or the only KZbinr to use a Subaru for remote off grid camping. The more I see the more I appreciate the durability of this little car/SUV/4X4. Because of the compatible going in price, durability factor, decent load capacity, the nice towing capacity, good gas mileage, small foot print and projected lifespan. I am seriously considering making a Subaru Forester my next vehicle. I have to say that I agree with you about the largest percentage of the roads are mostly semi improved gravel/ crushed stone.

The biggest thing that forester could benefit from is lockers. I'm a jeep guy (tj's) but always wanted a forester for long fly fishing road trips (more comfort and room). I'm not real big on the new body style but I will most likely be looking at getting an older Forester. I'm really digging the channel and I can't wait to see more content.

Torq Masters recently introduced a rear locker for Subaru diffs. I don't have one installed, but I've seen it in action. It makes a little noise in low speed tight turns but is quite effective on the trail. I've been surviving diagonal wheel spin situations thanks to the traction control system, but for older Subarus the locker makes a huge difference. And I'd still consider it for mine as well, you can see how much my car has to hesitate and think about it before getting the power distributed properly. In most cases I'm able to move on past the obstacle but in some situations, that hesitation is enough to keep me from going any further.

Great video. Subarus are pretty badass. All wheel drive and with the right tires, you can do alright. I have felt that true "4 wheeling" is more of a skill set--the machine is only the beginning. You have to know your machine, observe your surroundings, plan your path and execute with just the right combination of finesse and momentum. Well done sir!
