Hi! I do not understand how you can simultaneously compress and exhale? Did I misunderstand something maybe?
@SINGANDSCREAM2 жыл бұрын
Compression does not mean that you squeeze everything shut. The cough stop or HUH! is there to show you how where the false folds are. You are not supposed to hold everyting shut and then talk, as this of course doesn't work. You might have more luck trying out the ''grandpa voice'' or talking while you are ''taking a poop'' or while lifting something from the ground to get the feeling down. All of these are unfortunately easy to do wrong and hurt yourself with so practice with caution.

ayyy dude so update, turns out this whole time ive been doing your fry scream from the 30 sec fry scream tutorial and even went through ur website as well and lots of great info, i just have a question about the twang. when i use twang and go a bit louder i get like a “buzzer” noise. then when i add compression it already basically sounds like the fry scream u do. im just not sure if i have it down because, when i get to the last step “add extra breathyness” it seems to stop all the other things from happening so im wondering if im unintentionally already adding the breathyness and just adding extra on top of that which ruins it, or, im already doing it right. lol. another thing, how i got here is i was trying to learn how to do a “false chord” scream because thats what everyone says corey taylor is doing. i suppose my question is a) how did i get a fry scream while trying to understand false chord screams and b) well since im at the fry scream now with the breathyness, i find i can get mid and low sounds and thats my limit. i can i suppose “sing” a high note but as soon as compression is added it sounds very low or just back to the standard mid fry scream. i am using the flat tongue with back of tongue being at roof of mouth with mouth open very wide (i cannot open my mouth very wide lol) but i still get mids/lows. however, if i start by using vocal fry or the grudge noise and add compression it automatically sounds very high (kinda like nekrogoblikons vocals). am i heading in the right direction? lol also this paragraph could have been way shorter i apologize in advance for the novel posted here.
@SINGANDSCREAM3 жыл бұрын
If it already sounds like a fry scream its likely already a fry scream, so skip that step then and go with what feels and sounds good to you! You are likely doing a fry scream with compression and vocal fry inside instead of breathiness

@SINGANDSCREAM3 жыл бұрын
There is a pretty hard cap with fry screams. Where it is depends on many things BUT don't pursue loudness just to get louder. In the end you sing into a microphone and this evens out all the volume differences. A louder scream in the room sounds of course more impressive, but in the mix or live into the mic it will not necessarily translate this way.

Trying to do this method, and I can't tell whether I'm being a coward or if I'm missing something. I can sometimes hit a decent false chord scream, but any time I try to get my false fry compression it just. I can't get past the blockage I feel no matter how intense I'm going- I've had these issues with most techniques based on compression (as a singer who has the experience of 'dear heck do not push the voice you will cause damage' and learned it the hard way through vocal rest)... my false chord scream relies on everything being open in the throat and posture, and I can only do it in my low range. I would like to expand my scream versatility, but I feel like I'm hitting something wrong whenever I try. All I get is a lot of coughing from spending too long against the compressed near-cough space, and I can't put any fry into it or the back of my throat just gets all stuck (I've heard that if done right, I shouldn't feel too much and I definitely shouldn't feel any negative aftereffects. So I'm pretty darn sure I'm doing it wrong, but I don't know what I'm messing up, or how to fix it to keep my voice healthy- I'm a lot more experienced with clean singing and I really want to keep that part intact. Of note is that I'm also basically always congested, so I imagine that has an effect.
@danielbrennan1231 Жыл бұрын
I’ve found screaming with mouth closed (like humming) works to overcome this because you can’t force that much air without your mouth open so very little risk of damage. Regular vocals warm up with humming too

Hello, dear friend! First of all, I must say a huge "THANK YOU" for all these videos you make because they are incredibly helpful and you deserve a hell better than what you recieve from them! My question is, can I contact you in some way if you could help me know a little more about two techniques that I've been using for some time, but I kind of learnt by accident? I'm a guitarist, vocalist and beatboxer and I l'm really into discovering new unique types of vocal techniques and most from what I've learnt are distorted. Not sure if you know that, but if you've seen some beatboxers in the last couple of years, there's a huge variety of different unique bass vocal techniques, which are 100% vocals with no editing and all of them are really unique and with its own mechanism. So, I would say I'm able to do around 20 different distorted vocal techniques, including screaming techniques and bass vocal techniques. But my question is, if you could help me know a little more about those two I was taking about above, if you know some other vocalists using them or if you know a little more about the anatomical mechanisms of these two because the interesting thing is that, I've never really been only into death metal or deathcore music, as I know most of the time false cord and fry screams variations are mainly used there. I guess fry screams are a little more universal and versatile, as they play role in other genres sometimes, as well. I'm working the most on alternative rock music and one of my biggest goals ever, was to learn how to add tonal distortion to clean vocals, and still is. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not working that much on too heavy genres, but I would just love to master the techniques. Now that I've learnt a lot more unique, distorted techniques, after all, I'm still struggling with what I want to learn the most - distorted singing vocals. In one of the two techniques I was talking about, there basically a vocal fry, combined with falsetto without any type of tension, straining, compression or even too much breath control. Just tonal control is a little harder than usual, and to me it sounds like a more tunes version of a fry scream, with which I'm able to sing with distorted fry falsetto. The other one is a combination of whisper "compression" or more tightened whisper with a vocal fry synchronized. There's no tone in it and to me it sounds more like a quiet version of false cord scream but it feels really soft in your throat, as I think most vocal fry techniques should be. However, when I swallow or drink water after it, for some reason I'm not able to do it again in the upcoming seconds right after the swallowing. It takes me a couple of seconds or sometimes around a minute to get it again. I learnt both techniques from mimicking, almost two years ago. The tonal one, I learnt from listening to a lot of alternative rock vocalists adding grit to their singing. However, as I know, some of them like Kurt Cobain, were doing it wrong, putting the tension directly to their vocal cords. While listening to this, I was doing it in a completely different way. As I mentioned, adding a little vocal fry texture to falsetto singing. The other one I learnt was by listening to one bulgarian death metal vocalist. The second vocalist of the bulgarian band 'Grimaze'. You can check out some of their songs like 'Inner Engineering' or 'Endless Life Force' for example and you'll see what I'm talking about. You can also check out one of their acoustic covers when they play a 'Gojira' song and you'll hear how quiet it actually sounds, compared to other techniques. Their lyrics are in english, by the way. I may not do it the same way he does it, but I'm pretty sure that if it's not the same with what I do, it's pretty similar. I think it would be a lot better if you are able to actually hear it, instead of me only explaining in theory. I really apologize for the insanely huge comment... I hope I haven't wasted too much of your time. Thanks in advance for everything, mate! You are truly awesome! Greetings from Bulgaria! 😁💛🇧🇬🍀🔥💯🎶✨

Hello there and thank you so much for the kind words. You can send me some recordings of you via mail weidenauerlessons@gmail.com and I will feature them either in the next live stream or give you my thoughts when I have the time. I also give 1on1 lessons. You can find out about my lessons on www.singandscream.com/lessons What I would encourage you to do is digest everything you can find about vocal effects on the internet. A good resource is the Complete Vocal Institutes material on vocal effects. There are also lectures from them on KZbin iirc. You can also read the guides on my website singandscream.com for more Infos on these effects. You can combine many things in unique ways together to create cool sounds. As long as it feels comfortable and doesn't leave any impact on your voice after practicing you should be good. Cheers!

Everytime I try this I get a weird falsetto sound mixed with fry
@SINGANDSCREAM3 жыл бұрын
that sounds like you are doing a vocal fry then. Have you tried finding false fold distortion via compression first?

@@SINGANDSCREAM Yes I have experience with grit/compression in chest voice. I just dont understand how to go from a vocal fry into the fry scream you show in the video, my voice automatically slips into vocal fry when I try to add hypercompression. any tips ?
@SINGANDSCREAM3 жыл бұрын
Try playing around with the volume and also the pitch you sing inside the compression. It's not unusual for your voice to slip into vocal fry when compressing. If the compression feels good try not making a single note but try to talk and see what happens if you raise your voice little by little and focus on the pitch that you are talking at. Vocal fry is an indicator that you don't have enough volume for your voice phonate regularly.

Man! Is it possible that my false chord do not close or do not exist. Coz ive been trying false chord screams for almost 4 years now. Yeah i can do “whisper fry screams” where its not at all loud…. But i do the compression thing and when i try to sing a note or anything through it i get a little bit of rasp but it hurts like hell and i cant sustain it at all. Im really confused. Can anyone help???

If you are hurting yourself you are doing something very wrong and you should stop what you have been trying there. In this case I would advise learning with a vocal coach and not try to teach yourself. In the meantime you can work on your singing to get an overall better feeling for your voice.

Hey bro, sounds like I do the same vocal technique as you. I’ve been searching for years now to find someone who does my style. Would love to get in contact and see what else I could learn from you! Regards, Zach.

@@tomhiryu1601 have you checked whether it affects your voice? Voice changes, range limited? People sometimes get this when they do a NEW tecnique. Should go away after a coouple of days, week max. If not it points towards something in your technique being wrong

If I’m not mistaken it’s actually your arytenoids activating since they are right above your chords. Doing this feels completely different from actual false chord technique.

I’ve only got the one pitch atm taking it slow. But holy shit I’ve been trying to learn this for many months now more the Chester pitched scream but this style scream instantly worked for me. I’m coming fresh from one of those accidental screamers and instantly know what you mean. I was using pure fry only thinking it didn’t make sense but I’ll try. All that gets you is Maria Brink sound lol. Then again Cradle Of Filth also I do actually believe. Then again the man kills his face like this style so maybe it’s actually more this. Not gonna try that one til I get this one pitch down lol.

Man your video is the most helpful I’ve found out of the hundreds I’ve watched. I am going horse every time I practice though I just wanted to see if this is common at first and will get better after time? Thanks for the very helpful video we appreciate it

I think I tried learning fry screams 10 years ago but never even got close. I learned how to do false chord screams in the 90's but even then I always seem to have to re-learn them I don't do them for a time so I can record songs which I don't do often enough.
