This week I asked my friend and a part-time colleague Chandler to put together a video as he was in China on what to do on a date with Chinese. This was filmed in Shanghai so we're aware it would differ strongly city to city, but enjoy regardless :)

I loved those who mentioned to not fall for the stereotype or the gender. Regardless of where you are from, when people try to date you for your ethnicity and not who you are it’s off putting when up front and a sure way to a disaster in all cases. They are Chinese and might love food from other places, just like a Latina might love Japanese and Chinese food 💞

When listening to the part about food, I was getting confused and beginning to second-guess things. I am a man from America, and I live in China. I love the food. When I go on a date, I want to eat Chinese food, not American food. The foreign food in China is mostly pretty bad, anyway 😂

Aww, I was quite disappointed by the video. As a western girl who has lived in China I feel as though this misrepresented the various nuances of dating across those borders. Maybe it was the people who were interviewed. Most of them seemed to base their advice on stereotypes rather actually dating 外国人 (foreigners). Many of the interviewees seemed "cold", so to speak, which was not my experience with Chinese people at all.

@@user-wg6ek8bv9y Facts! Depending on which region you are in, you WILL get different responses. I'm Chinese and have traveled to many areas of China and none of them are alike, from the way people speak, to mannerisms, and food. Also, depending on how many wester tourists come to a region, it will affect how people act towards them. In the more populated cities like Beijing, and Shanghai, people there are pretty used to foreigners. However, in more southern areas like Guilin, people aren't so friendly to foreigners.

@@didiprangsak1757 Not really, splitting the bill really a bit of a faux pas. Not just when dating, but any social dinner. Only if with colleagues or less close friends would Chinese split the tab. Otherwise one person would normally pay, but there is often a playful argument about who gets to. Some girls will happily pay, especially on a second date if you make a good impression. (or, eat in one place, insist on paying, but then suggest that your partner treat both to ice cream/coffee at another venue. second date in the same day.) It is not about being cheap, or Chinese girls expecting guys always to pay. Splitting the tab shows that you are more interested in saving pennies than the person you are with.

Two things here: first it is a bit alarming how the values begin to divide and it's not "westernization", "democratization", "modernization", just different moral options. that's why asia should be careful with the influences they allow from outside, because they are subtle but their effect is dramatic. Western knowledge, products (some of them are targeted from the west itself), even democracy are ok (true, not any country can afford the same degree of democracy but it can do enough to make its people feel free). immorality, consumerism, importing pre-made behaviors - not so much. i appreciated the connection with the parents, even if unfortunately it can't apply in my case - but that's a good comparison between a healthy society and an insane one. As for me, realizing what happens only few years ago and letting myself fooled for the rest of my life really shows that I tried. otherwise, i am even ok with the idea that dating is a closed game for me - i just need the rest, because the evil would have a too big victory otherwise and would set its new rules over all.

I don’t think this short video was that deep. But, yeah, I think you have a point. I’m from America, and I’ve spent a lot of time in China. The Chinese way of thinking is very different. But they have adopted some of the behaviors of Westerners. Their minds are still Chinese, but they enjoy some of the trends and “moral options” from the West. Chinese girls love to watch American TV shows that show a certain way of life for women. I haven’t watched most of these programs myself, but I’m used to hearing of them: Desperate Housewives, Modern Family, Sex and the City, and Friends. Friends is an old snow, but it was already portraying a certain lifestyle.

In the minds of many Chinese women, marriage is something that is mostly unrelated to love and sex. Some Chinese women are interested in romance, but they generally see it as something that occurs outside of their serious relationships. Having a boring boyfriend or husband, and having a deeply emotional, romantic love with another man at the same time-this is not unheard of. Chinese women have explicitly told me these things. Since I’m a white guy, some of them open up to me and tell me things they would never tell their boyfriends or husbands.
