@@DCookStaVideo That was only really an issue with 1000 series, the memory controller wasn't good at all. Memory stability was vastly improved with each new iteration. I can throw literally any DDR4 kit at my 3600 and my 5800x without any instability. I even got a 3000 MHz kit stable at 3600 MHz.

If you do not overclock your CPU, and do not use CPU intensive applications, you would not notice much difference between motherboards.

@@jponz85 Watch some of Hardware Unboxed's motherboard roundups on B660/Z690 motherboards, that will give you a good place to start. You might not understand everything they're talking about, but you'll get the gist of which motherboards are decent and which aren't. Some general stuff to look for: The cooling. This will be obvious from looking at the board. The more heatsinks there are, and the beefier they are, the better. However, use caution if using a large air cooler like a Noctua DH-15, as heatsinks that are TOO beefy can interfere with its mounting. If you plan on using a higher-end CPU like a 12700k or 12900k, this becomes more important. If you're using a 12100, 12400, or even a 12600k (to some extent), it matters less. The power delivery, measured in phases. The more the better. Not something you need to worry about too much unless you're overclocking, but something to keep in mind as you compare boards. The rear I/O options. You'll want to buy something that suits your needs. For example, do you need wi-fi/bluetooth? Do you need more than one or two USB-C ports, or a lot of high-speed USB ports? Do you have a surround sound system that requires a lot of audio ports? The internal I/O. One thing I often see overlooked is that if your case has a USB-C port on the front I/O, you'll need to connect that to an internal USB-C header if you want that port to be usable. Not all motherboards have such a header. Also keep in mind how many RGB, ARGB, and USB 2.0 headers you'll need. If you're using standard fans without a splitter or fan controller, you'll also need a good amount of fan headers (though, as with (A)RGB headers, getting a splitter is always an option). How many M.2 NVMe drives you plan to use. Make sure to buy a motherboard that comes with enough slots. Most B660/Z690 motherboards have at least 2 (though some have as many as 5, IIRC), but smaller and lower-quality mini-ITX boards might not. How many PCIe slots you need. If you're using something like an internal wi-fi card, capture card, or sound card, you might need more than one. Again, most boards come with at least two, but smaller boards might not. Also, keep in mind the spacing between PCIe slots if you plan on using a beefy GPU, as you might be prevented from using the lower PCIe slot if your graphics card is too big. Your EPS 12v cable connections. Most lower-end boards have 8 pins, which can be provided by most standard power supplies, but some boards have 8+4 or even 8+8. If you're getting such a board, you should also buy a power supply capable of providing those connections. Most of the time, you can boot and function well enough with only 8 pins connected, but I've definitely heard of cases where a build wouldn't POST unless all of the cables were connected. This is also really important if you're overclocking. DDR4 vs DDR5. You'll need to buy a board that supports the kind of memory you intend to use. For my money, I'd say that DDR4 provides the best value right now, but sooner or later the market will be transitioning to DDR5 exclusively, so bear that in mind as you consider the longevity of the system. Finally, the brand. The brand determines everything from what kind of customer support you can expect, to what the RMA process will be like if something happens, to the usability and user-friendliness of the BIOS, to the general quality. This is a subjective category. For me personally, I rank ASUS near the top and ASrock near the bottom (I have an ASrock motherboard and would not recommend getting one). But some people have a bad experience (or experiences) with an ASUS product and swear off them forever, and some people have nothing but good experiences with ASrock. I'd do a bit of research here. Look up professional reviews of the motherboard(s) you're looking at, as well as regular customer reviews, and poke around on the brand's subreddit to see what their customer service might be like.

Results are actually not surprising. First of all, K series of CPUs are actually designed (binned actually) to be overclocked and run hot. Now, if you hobble them with low frequency single-channel RAM, they would actually idle for most of the time, waiting for other components. If you put non-adequate Athlon cooler they would heat up, maybe throttle a bit at highest temperature, but would still idle about the same. If you put them on low-end MB with otherwise good RAM and GPU, power delivery of said motherboard would be a limiting factor and cause for throttling. Overall, you don not "torture" CPU with low-end components, you only make it wait for them and then it runs slower but uses less power.

Down blowing air cooler cools the VRM, that's why it's working better. I suspect that is why all the 'stock' air coolers blow down, to help cheap mobo's VRM not melt a hole in the PCB.

Either of those would be a beast of a machine. Honestly it really depends on if it's primary for gaming or if you'll be doing any streaming, video editing, etc. If it's just gaming I'd go with the Intel CPU. If your streaming or editing also then I'd go with the Ryzen as its better at multi tasking those things.

I think the comparison between different speeds is not quite fair in this one because of the memory capacity being halved. As is seen in the video, bf5 uses ~12gb out of the 16gb of ram. When you decrease the total memory to 8 gb, it is bottlenecked by the capacity (as seen, it takes ~7.5 gb which is full assuming windows and other stuff takes memory too) and having to read/write from pagefile, which is slower. I think you should do a test with 2 kits of memory with the same size and different speeds to see how 12th gen really fairs with different speeds! (maybe even single channel vs dual channel but of the same capacity)

Thank you for this video. Whenever I build a budget system for a Client(part time hobby / pocket change) I have been going with 10th Gen Intel 10100f, 10105f, 10400f, whatever happens to fit the build and is the best value at the time, I have been sticking with the Asus TUF MATX board which is roughly 140$ US. Whenever I send the parts lists I always get the question of why is the motherboard so expensive, you could go with X for 40 or 50 less... the boards they reference never have built in wifi, are limited 2400-2933 ram speeds, and have no VRM cooling. Normally I can explain it and get them on board but there is always that 1 guy who knows that they are basically the same thing one just looks cooler... I will send them this video from now on.

Actually, if you use i3 or i5-10400f you could use cheapest boards available because CPUs in question do not really benefit much from VRM cooling and WiFi dongles are cheap. To benefit from more expensive boards you would need higher end components , both CPU and GPU.

@@aleksazunjic9672 I get the slightly better board for the XMP compatibility and Wi-Fi 6(35-45 dollar dongle)and I have yet to have one of these show up DOA. I have had to return multiple bottom tier boards that showed up DOA and have had several fizzle out early. Getting the MATX is the compromise to keep pricing reasonable. Spending 40 or 50 extra in this area gets a lot of performance per dollar.

@@RegazozoGaming WiFi on motherboards are usually of very low quality, most people do not need Wi-Fi 6 , as for quality that depends what do you do with board. If you put them in a case with bad airflow, and insufficient power supply they tend to break. In real life budget boards with components that are not overclocked tend to last longer than medium, or even high-end boards that are put to their limits.
