I’m using closed cell insulation for cold and below zero temperatures. I use 1/2” thick foam which I glue down with rubber contact cement after prepping with simple green degreaser. Some places you want to double up to 1” thick, in bow sleeping area. They also make 1/4” foam which can be doubled and tripled up and glued to the smaller compartment areas, where clothes are stored. I am running a Planar diesel heater 2D which is fine. At the marina I run a electric oil heater mostly at 750 watts and a 200 watt “my heat” electric heater on my feet if needed, this is efficient and quite. I like to blast the diesel heater when I get up in the morning to get it hot quick or double up with my electric heat when it super cold in the San Juans. The planar will heat your boat alone efficiently on its own very well. We love your videos! If you want a challenge have a baby or two! Cheers!

Congratulations Amy & Matt, I know that you are a long way from home, but you have crossed over your track since 2017. Well done indeed. I have thoroughly enjoyed your adventures; even the 14 months stalled In Indonesian waters. Other than covid19, I won't mention, some of the less exciting or unenjoyable parts. I'm very proud of the scuba diving training both of you did. With many lumps in my throat as I tried not to be jealous of your adventures. I'm just 75 and have longed for my own boat, but when I came to the USA, from Australia, in 1974, I had to give up all those personal wishes and help raise Joanne's 3 kids from her first marriage. So, thank you for allowing me to share your trip. I have thoroughly enjoyed myself sailing with you in spirit. Oh, my deepest condolences in John's passing. Another thing I despise Covid 19 for. Every time I see you sail that little No.1 I think of him. Chins up. He's still proud of you both. Excited to hear that you're not stopping sailing and hope you keep us posted on You Tube, as you fit out "Florence" for the arctic circle. God Bless and keep you both. Tons of Love. Now, THIS IS WHY SALING FLORENCE IS OUR FAVORITY SAILING CHANNEL. Congratulations on closing the loop. And thanks so much for sharing your adventure with us. Your understated tone mixed with genuine excitement about the jounney is so refreshing. After you have seen Scotland, Norway, Svalbard (?), and other parts of the North Atlantic, you may want to warm up with an autumn, winter, spring voyage back across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, through the canal, and then up into the North Pacific for a taste of coastal British Columbia. (So sorry about the problems re: entering into the USA.) You can avoid those by voyaging offshore from Mexico direct to B.C. It is about 1,400 miles, but well worth it. The prevailing winds turn to the northwest (on the nose) after April/May, so try to get up there early. We have spent our summers in B.C. since 1975, and have logged 35,000+ nm on our 1976 trawler M/V Iron Wind, which we bought 1982. We also reaaly like your thoughtful approach to things. Your list of things needed on Florence can all be accomlished for much less than a different boat would cost (and it would probably also require many of the same upgrades/repairs). Great decision making. And thanks for unintentionally reinforcing our many decisions over the years to "reinvest" in our little old trawler rather than "moving up" to a more expensive boat. Now , "The older we get, the better the fit." (LOL). BTW, think about a combination solution for heating in cold climates. We installed fixed AC heaters for winters in the marina. They are augmented by an Espar forced air diesel heater for cruising. We replaced the original Espar in 2022. Two thumbs up on that new unit. It is even better than the original, more efficient, and quieter. When the electricity on land went out for several days during a Fraser River Polar Outbreak (a 50 kt nor'easter and -10C temps) in December, we just moved onto the boat, turned on the Espar, and were snug as can be until the winds and cold moderated. We had several land-based friends "drop in for a visit" because their houses were dark and frigid. LOL. Fair Winds; Hec and Jan

As a fairly recent discoverer of Sailing Florence I have been binge watching the back catalogue. Quite extraordinary! I congratulate you on your decision to keep the monohull but as a resident of northern Scotland I wonder how those plans will pan out. No swimming with turtles here! Big tides in Orkney, less so in Shetland but sitting in a cockpit going upwind is bitter until early July. I am able to drive home for a hot bath after sailing -you wouldn't be able to do that. It's a bit warmer but a lot wetter on the West Coast. I love the fact that you sail your dinghy for pleasure - it has been said that the pleasure you get from a boat is inversely proportional to its waterline length. I have a 14ft trimaran which I sail for thrills, a Phantom which I race and a 22ft cruiser which I sail a bit further out to sea to feel the waves and occasionally sleep aboard. If you are ever passing Findhorn (near Inverness) do drop in! PS Congratulations on the new ensign!

I lived in the Tropics for over 15 years and I can totally understand why you want to experience the Northern climes ! I found myself missing proper seasonal changes after a while and I especially missed seeing the leaves change colour in Autumn and seeing the English countryside bursting into life in Spring but I hate cold weather ! It took me about 6 years to fully acclimatise to the British climate again and I have had to buy really good quality Winter gear so I can ride my motorbike through Winter ! If you have the right clothing you'll be OK and if you can insulate the entire hull then the boat will not freeze but I have a feeling you'll not be staying up in the Arctic Circle for more than a couple of months ! You have to have some kind of plan though, I agree with that !

Congratulations, guys, on sailing round the world, in such style and with such a well told story. That must be most satisfying for you and a great achievement. Well done! I love your channel. I love boats and water, and although I am now nearer 80 than 70, I row fine boats and skiffs regularly and keep fit that way. I’ve sailed with friends, but never, in my 60s, became any more competent than jibing a Laser without falling out. I’ve done 20 knots, out on the trapeze, on an Hurricane 5.9, bounced across Falmouth Bay in a Westerly 33, explored Cornish creeks in an 9m Catalac and rowed the 23 miles of the Thames Great River Race in a120 year old Thames Skiff, but I would love to have had the courage to do what you have. I only found you recently and so I have gone back to the beginning and I’m up to Episode 67. I love the visual, audio and content quality of your videos and you are now firmly my top sailing channel. Congratulations also on your approach to local communities and people. You, and folks like you, are doing more to foster world peace than any politician. I just had to break sequence and watch this video because of the title and I’m delighted that you will be continuing and with a real new challenge. You are certainly going to need that heater! So congratulations again, and I’m delighted that I will be able to continue to share in your adventures. “Sailing Florence Around the World” certainly would not have been quite the same without Florence!

The higher latitudes hold a special fascination for cruising. It is a different ball game, for sure. No more bucket showers on deck. Endless discovery about where condensation can take place. All that and taller waves and stronger winds. What's not to like!? Well, the wait is finally over! I'm relieved that Sailing Yacht Florence and her crew will continue to tantalize me with tales of far-flung cruising. This is great news!! I'm also looking forward to hearing all about the re-fit of Florence. You mentioned insulation. I added insulation on a previous sailboat on board which I lived during winter. I used two layers of Army sleeping pads as material, cut into the various shapes and sizes needed. It was available, made of closed-cell foam to avoid water issues, light, and inexpensive. I secured it without glue, just kept in place by covering material. Install CO2 sensors in addition to your standard smoke detectors. And, have not one but two heaters, along with a calorifier for warm water. Oh boy, what fun!! I can't wait to hear about it!

Glad taht you don't go for a multihull, keep on on a "normal" boat which is maybe a challenge but also an example to normal people. Bravissimi.

Glad to hear of your future endeavors, wishing you the best. Having sailed the southern oceans my only comment is you are extremely brave doing any sailing where bits of ice are floating in the seaway. Kika and Dan have done it on Uma but they were lucky in my opinion. It is no fun to have a chunk of plastic taken out of the bow, so I'd look for a steel or aluminum hull.

Thank you for the updates! I am overjoyed that the "ratrace" is not going to suck you back in! It will be facinating to see what you do with Florence and also to see your new cruising grounds. Bring some warm clothing! I'll be right here awaiting and enjoying your productions!
