I am a sailor on a 38 SS Catalina . I use to sail in St. Lucia and St. Vincent . Sorry to hear it is un safe . I was there in the 80s. I now have learned about Martinique through you and others . I am glad this is a good island to cruise to. You are my favorite sailing vlog.

Excellent video. Liked the video of the windvane shaft when beating upwind, as we rarely see them from behind in action, they seem to operate in similar but varied ways, some with ropes or lines, some on the end of rudders. Thanks.

Next time the prop hub is "spun", drill holes in opposite sides of the prop and insert two self-tapping screws until tight against the central spline. It will last for a long time if you keep the rev's down, for example a full season in the Bahamas.

You bring back great memories of a decade of winter sailing in the Caribbean. Bequia, Tobago Cays and Martinique were favorite haunts. In those days the Tobago Cays had no moorings and folks just anchored there to their heart's content. We would load up with provisions in Trinidad at the start of the season and restock in Marin mid season. Marin is the only place we found with a first-world grocery store a short walk from the dinghy dock. Once provisioned, the outer anchorage off St. Anne is a much nicer place to hang on the hook.

I sailed in the Caribbean in 1974 and could relate to your provisioning issues. We stored a lot of our canned goods in the bilge. We removed all of the paper labels and marked the cans with a permanent marker since the moist conditions in the bilge cause all the labels to come off. Also I was sorry you couldn’t stop at the anchorage between the pitons in St Lucia it is not comfortable but very memorable since you bring a stern line to the beach and tie it to a palm tree.

Hey guys, a super nice video and thanks for the tip on restocking in Martinique. On the cars with the bad pins you have it right, rivet a new pin in there so that it will be all smooth with nothing sticking out to chafe. You could use a soft pc. of stainless or even a brass rod and rivet them yourself on the boat. If you car is aluminum it would be best to use either aluminum or stainless rod due to corrosion issues. If you have a little vise, clamp a bit of rod in the vise and "head up" one side of the rod. Put the rod in place and mark it to be a bit longer than needed. Then back up the side you headed up in the vise with something metal and heavy and use another hammer (a ball peen works best but any old hammer will work) to head up the remaining side. Keep going until the rivet is pulled up tight and then if needed do a little filling and sanding to smooth, good as new. No doubt you can do a professional job and save yourself some cruising money. Looks great doing the provisioning. A tough way to get the the supermarket but at least you can get vegetables. Believe it or not there is VEGETABLE RATIONING! at British supermarkets at the moment. Really I am not kidding the country has gone crazy. So enjoy the Caribbean shopping experience

@@ksc743 it’s not as simple as the BBC would have you believe. Yes there has been slightly colder weather in Spain and Morocco but this only led to a small reduction. The real reason is that the Growers can’t be arsed with Brexit import paperwork and lorry drivers don’t want to be caught in 70 hour delays and so the EU gets the vegetables. Oh and UK electric prices are so high UK growers can’t afford to heat their greenhouses. So we get veg rationing.

@@Sailing_Antrice that's true. I read it used to be cheaper to import and transport fruit and veg than grow it locally, but as you say, it's become much more complex now. What a mess. Looking from the outside in looks like Brexit needs to be reversed.

@@ksc743 absolutely it was a scam. There ought to be laws here against telling lies in Government but there aren’t so a whole bunch of people where conned. The biggest problem for British Yachting is the 3rd country 90 day rule which means the Med is now largely unavailable to us.

As for the lies governments tell, I live in South Africa so, believe me, I can relate. I think America can relate as well. Seems those at the 'top' place their own agendas above those of the people - something that needs to change asap. I still find it hard to believe tho, that people voted for Brexit. Even I could foresee that would be a disaster. Zuma, Brexit and Trump - my three worst events politically of the past decade.

Looks like the prop bushing is pretty well gone but it may still be possible to drill a hole or two through the hub and insert a short screw into the rubber to keep it from spinning. At least for a spare.

So sad about St Vincent, but a very wise decision not to stop. Why risk it? Nice idea with holding/jamming the flywheel on the motor, although sometimes ‘shocking’ the nut can help. Basically, put you spanner on the nut and strike it. Yes it will turn, but the shock of each strike on the spanner can often loosen the nut over successive blows. Then you ‘may’ be able to get it lose 🙂

Whoa. The cracked pin is a split pin. Also called a drift pin. Save your sail anchors to fix them as you go.

I had exactly the same outboard motor. My thoughts would be to drill a hole through the prop body down to the bush. Thread the hole and put in a bolt in to stop the spinning. Not ideal but it would do as a get out of jail fix.

I would suggest getting stainless steel roll pins to repair your batten cars, tighter fit than clevis pins. I would also advice replacing that R clip on outboard prop for a split pin as R clips have no place in a fast rotating application. It is also possible to insert a smaller roll pin inside a bigger one for added strength.

Sell your outboard to some local speed demons. I bought a 52 CC four stroke Hangkai air cooled outboard. It's smooth, light, and insanely easy to start. It's all you need.

A very interesting look into how you plan and shop. So good that you can get to a port with cheaper supplies and parts. I had heard you need to remove paper labels from all the cans to avoid bugs that eat them. Did you need to o that?

We used to remove the labels but don't any more, we only remove them if storing in the bilge so the label can't come off and clog the bilge pump.

In short we can't easily, we have to move the genoa car and re-thread the sheet to the winch when we change from Genoa to the hank on Staysail on the inner stay. One of the jobs for the re-fit is to add a second car to the track and a double cheek block with clutches before the winch so we can easily swap between the two.
