Put a dump bed. But switch from leaf spring axles to air bag suspension you can deflate for loading. To lessen the load angle.
@BuilderofRat
@BuilderofRat 10 ай бұрын
That is a good idea. I can see that working, plus, you can adjust the air for more weight or less weight. I have a 1923 T Bucket with air bag suspension on each end. I have a front receiver, and it is a hoot for moving trailers around. Just let the front air bags down drive under the hitch, then air up the bags. The bed lowering would do the same thing.

Create a bed like a roll off dumpster. You can put the flatbed on the ground and drive anything on it from your crawler to that mini cooper in the onX challenge then hook and lift it up on. And it will still function like a dump bed/rollback. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. You can even create different beds for it.

wheelbase needs to be longer surely?! its going to pick the front wheels off the ground when you use the rollback function. it will handle terribly with so much weight behind the rear axle on such a short wheelbase too.

It'll likely have some kind of frame work on the under side to keep it from doing that. Plus that truck/frame with the cummins engine is pretty heavy in the front. Might float the tires if you load something heavy but the fj and side by sides or the sand rails won't ever phase it.
@tetedur377
@tetedur377 10 ай бұрын
Instead of using the horizontal rails of the pivot, what's wrong with using the frame rails of the truck itself for that function? Drill the frame, insert your bushings, and stick the bar through the bed rails. You can modify the rear of the truck bed to look like the rear of that pivot, including the ramp angle. I mean, the frame is boxed, so it should be strong enough.

Paul, think about this before you continue, your wheelbase is way to short to put that long of bed on it. You are going to have way too much weight on the back past the rear axle, and have steering issues because the front tires will not have enough weight on then. lengthen your frame and move the axle back.

any thought of doing a roll on/roll off style? basically a hooked arm at the front that rolls back and the rear is essentially on rollers. look at roll off dumpsters for example, they even make tow trucks with this system as you can basically set the deck on the ground for every type of vehicle without worrying about approach/departure angles.

You can put a 1/4" diamond plate steel trap door hinged all the way across supported by some 2"x4" tubing on each side and in the center to allow access to the batteries and other equipment near the cab. The plate trapdoor only needs to be about 2' wide across the width of the truck bed. ??

Few Ideas: Would it be possible to use a/the stinger to operate the roll back bed? or Have the bed operate like a tilt trailer? That would move all stuff down lower. Hard to tell on the camera but it looks like that should give you 4-6 inches less in height. You could even have the dovetail operated by the stinger so in drive position the bed would be flat (Like a split tilt trailer.) You don't need two tanks. You can make a sidebox to place the battery and all your rigging into on the other side. You could even cut a door in the side if you insist on it being round.

No matter the direction the bed goes, it's still the coolest hauler on the road!

@Fab Rats Hey Paul, here's an idea. What about an old-school race hauler? You know the kind with the slant bed that used to haul race/stock cars to the track. With that kind of slant, you should easily be able to drive the FJ or the tow truck right up onto it.

How about making a hydraulic dove tail. You have the length in the bed and the rams to move the tail. Cut the bed in two, put a backing/pivot plate on each section and use your pipe that you used for the bushings for your pivot points.

Just a thought.. If you switch to airbag suspension, you could have that pivot point even further forward to allow the back of the ramp to get lower, also, you could deflate the bags during loading to get it even lower still.

Paul your hitting all around what they call a Roll-Off aka what we used call a Drop-Box as waste disposal companies use. My 2 uncles build the first one ever back in 1960. Go Google roll-off truck and you'll see what I'm talking about! Easy to build, you have the still and knowledge to build one, you'll be surprised how well they work and you can use your roll-back bed to boot!!! We use to haul our race cars to our local dirt track.

Do a tilt bed roll off. Use the same concept as a roll off dumpster. Bed tilts and then can roll off flat onto the ground like a dumpster then use a winch to pull back up onto the bed and a hydraulic ram to lay it flat.

You have hydraulics. U could do a tilt bed that also has a tilting tail to lessen load angle.. hinge..and a cylinder or two at back. Look at some the tilt tail flat bed deck over trailers for ideas. Make whole deck tilt and a tilting whale tail on it as well.. be handy dandy.

If you want a rollback use the frame from the original rollback truck. Also, if you’re going the tilt bed, you might want 2 rams to tilt the bed because you’ll loose the bed. Just look at accidents of dump truck when they lift the bed high. One ram makes the front of the bed twist and tip.

The odds of getting it right when you start out with a “hybrid” chassis, engine and cabine, were quite slim from the get go. Love the way your team is pushing the project - and you show it all, failure and fun - that’s why The FabRats rocks.

I can see that axle needing to be moved back as far as possible, probably even further then what's left of the chassis. There's going to be a heap of weight hanging over the back as it sits atm. How much weight can those tyres and axle handle, the counterweight effect will move some of the front weight to the rear. I really want this to work for you guy, I just think this is going to be an issue in the future. Drive ability and safety

I'm typing this before finishing the video, but I just had a great idea for the bed. How about installing one of those crane wenches on the bed. Put it at the front of the bed exactly in the center. It would surely pick up a sxs. Just make a harness for it. I've seen crane trucks in the oilfield. At your skill lvl, it's a piece of cake. Love the vids guys.
