as an old timer who has been working with computer-controlled vehicles since they were introduced in 1980 i have some words of wisdom from experience... the obd1 years were really difficult because the auto manufacturers really didn't want to share any information about their systems but legally they had to, to a certain point, so there were a few tool companies that pursued in the search for information and began producing diagnostic tools that independent techs could use since the tools available at the dealership level were not available to the public. otc was one of the first and came out with the monitor 85 in 1985 that could connect to 80-85 gm vehicles only, but the next year gm changed their software so the monitor 85 was no longer usable so they had a buy-back program to upgrade to a monitor 86... this game went on for a few more years until otc and other companies came out with scan tools that used removable software cartridges so you wouldn't have to replace your scan tool every year, just update the software cartridge. in the early days gm had the best obd system because you could not just read trouble codes, you could also see live running data with the scan tool connected. this was a very valuable feature that ford overlooked until 1990, before then all you could do on a ford was read codes and put the system into a wiggle test that would allow you to find loose electrical connections. chrysler's system was almost as good as gm's but didn't give as much live data. import vehicles were a major pain in the butt because they never did standardize on a specific diagnostic connector, different years of vehicle used a different connector as well as different manufacturers.. it was a major investment to be a tech in those days, my scan tool set with all of the upgrades cost me $6000 dollars in 1995..... today, all you need if you're working on anything 1998 or newer is an obd-ii scan tool which can be as little as $30 or maybe a few hundred bucks now. times have certainly changed....

My F150 that I bought recently is 1995 and when I remembered that 1996 was the year of OBD2 I felt a distinct sense of being lost and alone. That’s like going for a Sunday drive through country roads and realizing your smartphone is dead when it’s time to go home. A lot of man skills have been automated.

Not sure if it was my 87 Reliant of my 89 but it failed inspection for emissions. I went to a Chrysler dealer where I had two friends one was the parts manager and the other was a mechanic there. I was getting plugs, rotor, cap, and wires to address the problem. John the mechanic saw me and asked what's up? So I tell him I'm replacing some stuff to pass emissions. Did ya pull the codes he says. Nope I say. Well get out there and pull the codes. I go back to him with the code and he looks it up and tells me the O2 sensor was called out. I tell my parts guy to put the parts he pulled back and get me an O2 sensor. It was roughly the same price as the other parts together and it extinguished the check engine light and we started getting 2 and 3 miles to the gallon better gas mileage. great vid love the bfate.

Hey Brian, I have an 89 Bronco II. Funny seeing you standing in front of a 2.9l haha. Just wanted to point out that the Ford EEC-IV (pronounced EEC FOUR, the IV are roman numerals) does flash the CEL for codes as well, so you don't need a scanner tool. You can jump the self-test pin (single-pin connector) with the signal return pin (looking at the connector with the two pins on top and four on bottom, it's the second pin in the top row) using a paper clip. This will flash the CEL just fine, but if you don't have a bulb or it isn't working for some reason, you can connect a test light or analog voltmeter to the self-test output (second pin in the bottom row of the multi-pin connector) then run the other cable to the positive battery terminal. For the test light it will flash and for the analog voltmeter it will show spikes in voltage to represent a "blink" of a light (the ECU just sends voltage to the pin on the connector to flash the light, so that change in voltage will show up on the voltmeter). Anyways, just wanted to point that out for anyone else passing by.

Great video, next one might cover why none of the codes really point to a specific part but to the system parts in that area. Like a P0301 might not be a spark plug like the parts store person told you it was.... Some of the OEM tools for OBD-I did quite a bit, far more than just reading the cores, there was live data and the ability to do bi-directional tests. Most makes still had a lot of manufacturer specific codes as well just like they do with OBD-II. Then when the change happened some were really ready while GM gave us OBD 1.5 !!!! For one year only! Thanks GM.... OBD-II makes it easier but even then it takes the human using it to find what is really wrong.

I found this interesting because I was just entering into auto mechanics in the mid 70's. (Carbs, points and intake manifolds were cast iron) Then I joined the Army and didn't return to auto mechanics until the early 2000's. I totally missed the OBD I stuff.

Great stuff. I recalled a 78 F100 I had, after watching this, and had the dangness choke. I bet I replaced it 3 times and finally went without it. See if you can find a Model A and I believe they had no hydraulic brake systems. I got to drive one and it sure made me appreciate hydraulics. Good stuff as always.

@@briansmobile1 Work van used to be a Nissan pick up, basically the same engine in it from 1970 till they stopped making it. Points and plugs, I did the odd service on it as it aged, till it was traded in. I really wanted to buy it though, they are a tough vehicle drivetrain wise, pretty much all those built that were not totalled are still running, though your body might be more air than panel, and be more a collection of bondo and rust moving in close formation, held together by paint, wire and by holding on to the top.

Holy crap! Yes I do! Had a shop owner that I worked for that didn't want to sell it because of the investment, but no one wanted to take the time to learn it. He didn't either. Everyone just wanted to flag hours and make money. We all had to walk around it to get to the specialty tool rack. This was during the time my oldest daughter was having hard core seizures and I had hard core medical expenses to try to catch up with. I was also going to college full time and working 2 jobs or I totally would have trained on it. Good on you man!

I had a 1967 Dodge van. Wish I never sold it. I would have kept it but for two reasons. No power steering & no A/C. I didn't mind the drum brakes and one vacuum line! Easy to work on but became difficult to obtain carburetors for.... it.

Here in Europe, we copied OBDII to EOBD. But it only started in 2001. This made for some wierd situations. I owned 2 cars that had an OBDII plug, but were not OBD compatible. Basically, the same car was sold in the US , but not with the same engine type. The plug was there, and the manufacturers system worked on it with their own protocol, but no OBD.

I wish there was a scan tool that could "reliably" get live data from any obd1 vehicle that wasn't 1000's of dollars . With cheap tech nowadays I would think there would be more available.

Obdii is so good. I used a bluedriver Scan tool yesterday to find out why the wife's work car won't start. Purchase it on your recommendation. The code was for a missfire for cylinder one. So I checked cylinder one. When I went to pull the coil on plug out it was drenched in motor oil, the whole spark plug whole was filled. Cleaned it out and checked all the others. They were dry. Being that cylinder one is right next to the oil fill my guess is that when the oil was changed they spilled and it ran down in to the plug whole. Put it all back together started right up, a lot of blue smoke for the oil but cleared right up.

It is interesting and amusing to see people incorrectly throw around terms like OBD1. People seem to like to call all computer controls prior to 1996 OBD1. That is absolutely incorrect. OBD1 was a C.A.R.B. (California emissions) only mandated datastream standard that started in 1990 and ended with the rollout of the US federal OBD2 standards. None of the computer diagnostics on any vehicle prior to 1990 are OBD1 and the 49 state emissions vehicles manufactured between 1990 & 1995 were not OBD1 either. Prior to the Federally mandated OBD2 specifications there were no 50 state computer diagnostics standards. It was literally the Tower of Babel. Ford had proprietary EEC I to IV IIRC, GM had proprietary CLCC & ALDL, and other manufacturers had their own proprietary computer diagnostics. CLCC and ALDL used the same 12 position Metripak 280 connector across all GM nameplates in the US but the serial datastream wasn't even the same amongst the same brand and nameplate. GM 2.8L ECU in a Pontiac Fiero & 2.5L ECU in a Pontiac Fiero of the same model year could, and did, have different serial datastreams. Prior to 1988 or so GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, ad-infinitum were equally obnoxious in the blatant and fairly successful attempt at keeping the unwashed masses away from the minuscule amount of data these embryonic engine and transmission control systems provided to an initiated technician. It wasn't til the CARB only OBD1 edict that the government made their voices heard. International industrial standards organizations in Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, and several other European countries likely had things to say about the OBD2 standard with government backing. They certainly have input into the latest CAN protocols that were mandated by a major chunk of world governments in the last decade or a little more. The stated goal of OBD2 was to allow non dealership technicians access to repair data to reduce emissions. Governments don't do things for altruistic reasons. If you believe that I have a bridge to sell you. They create laws and regulations to accrue power and authority they would not otherwise be allowed. Automotive and heavy equipment communications standards are no exception but I'll take the bad with the good since it seems to be at least mildly in our favor... so far.

In my neck of the woods we would call that preOBD or obd zero. Obd1 92-95. Then again we don't have emissions in my county, just visual inspection.

For pulling codes they're great. Some newer ones even give you freeze frame data and the VIN #. FF data is stats on what the cars status was when the error happened. Things like engine temp, vehicle speed, RPM's, etc.

They don't give you a lot of meaning- just basic description on what the universal codes mean- not the vehicle manufacturer specific stuff.

Bronco, what is bad, either plug wires, rotor or distributor cap is breaking down, or is there tracking inside because it is full of oil deposits. Or the injectors are knackered and spraying a stream instead of a mist, leading to mix imbalance, or your fuel pressure is wrong.

I had a 1995 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight that was assembled in January of that year. The port underneath the dashboard was an OBD II port, but the car itself was OBD I certified. I did some research and apparently this was common practice for the 1995 model year. Pretty lame, in my opinion. Trying to find another car right now-the Olds broke down-and OBD II is now one of my requirements.

Not a whole lot of info on OBD1. With OBDll if you disconnect the battery you need to put your car through a drive cycle, is that the same with an OBDl since it doesn’t store codes. Does it store any information? If I disconnect the battery could I get a smog check right away in California. And pass. Thanks

I have a 1988 Subaru xt6 and when I'm driving new alternator new battery but when I'm driving it just gets like 25-30 miles an hour and then it won't it just won't go and then if you push the gas hard it bogs out and let it go and then it's just whatever Adobe do you want I believe what should I pay to have it scanned what would be a good price

Hey Brain. I dont know if this is the right place to ask this question. But i have a 06 forester with a small evap leak. I see smoke back by canister. I have changed canister and valve above it. I cant tell were smoke i coming from. do you have any input for me? it acts like its coming from fill tube were it hooks to the rubber. but cant tell. thanks Randy.

I went to remap a DAF truck recently i went to plug in my obd2 cable and realised that the daf truck obd2 connector was different. Still 16 pin but the plastic strip in the middle of the pins was spilt into 2 in middle. Do you know why there are 2 different types?

Well ya I'd really like to see more of this type of content OBD1 Ford trucks and by the way I had a 77 F150 with the straight 6 in it and then I had a 91 F150 with the straight 6 in it also and now I just got a 92 F150 flair side with the 5.0L in it and I'm having all kinds of stuff to do on it So please anything at all that you could do on content for 92 5.0L EFI with manual trans. Would be very helpful I'm sure bc it idles fine and runs fine but stop at a stop or put it in reverse and then it like it goes on a 3 day drunk binge falling on its face .....LOL

It kind of has. It's less complicated than you would expect though. Just some growing pains like when we transitioned to fuel injection. Many manufactures don't want it to be easy or accessible, but information finds a way. Tesla is an example of this so is the Prius.

All the obd does is save time for an experienced mechanic and actually make mechanics possible with no experience. You can tell which cylinders are lean or rich, running hot, too cold and everything else by looking at them and the sparkplugs, you just got to know what you are looking at, all these fancy gizmos still doesn't sound as trustworthy as cooters garage

In my opinion, first thing first: show where the ODB port is located, in most cars including SUV; second tell in simple and short sentences, what is it for; and thirdly, start talking on your blah, blah, blah. Period!
