Having used all three, leds are the brightest, hid very good but igniters gave some problems. Halogen easiest on the eyes on a long drive and bulb upgrades cheap. I have old eyes and don't blast down the road so Halogen do for me.

I think one thing to note here is that Halogen lights, due to their heat output, it helps with keeping snow and ice clear of the lens as the heat output melts the snow and ice off. I had a pair of Jetco 100w Halogen 6x8 square driving lights and a pair of Rigid Dually D2 flood lights and the Jetco lights very rarely had ice or snow build up where as the Rigid's usually did which lessened their light output.

HIDs in theory sound great but the bright white is terrible for visibility especially in dust clouds. Would adding an amber cover to the lens change the color enough to increase visibility?

It's a shame they don't offer the daylighter in HID any more and they don't stock the replacement driving beam pattern lens that they show. I loved the two sets of HID daylighters I have but one lens was damaged so now I have to go look for a whole different pair of lights. It's a shame KC doesn't continue support for an iconic product that was $$ to buy into.

Had some OG daylighter halogens on my buggy years ago, and while it did the job, only barely so. If you really wanted to see where you were going, you needed 2 close, 2 mid, and 4 far aiming lights. For that, you also needed a high output alternator. Even then, halogens could only push far enough for me to feel comfortable up to 60-70 mph. I like LEDs for side, and close range illumination, and HIDs to push out past the effective range of LEDs. I need to be able to see where im going. I will sat that like the halogens also. But only give to my broke friends that cant afford real lighting. I'm old, man... don't judge.

I've seen quite a few offroad racing type setups where they'll have a row HID's mounted where the middle lights are aimed straight out, the lights on the outer left and right are angle inward and cross beams in front of the car . That way there's a hot spot in close where the beams cross, lighting is off to the sides where those beams continue out, and down range illumination from the lights aimed straight out.

I replaced my LED 6” aux lights for halogen 6” lights for winter driving. My LED headlights, fogs and previous aux lights would ice up in snow/wet driving causing extremely dangerous drive ability. Since switching to a sae/dot halogen aux in amber/yellow much improved visibility and safety. If you dont get snow then LED all the way!

Gr8 vid! First time since the debute of leds ive heard anyone in the selling businesses confirm what most hidusers already know about hids throwing length! big shoulderclap for that! but don't forget the fact that halogens melts ice off of the glass better than any of the 3 due to the energy conversion losses and you need a solid 75w+ hid to do the same as a 55w Halo does, leds naturally falls short for us up in the north due to this very reason even tho they're excellent lights 😁✌️
@littlegoobie
@littlegoobie 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that surprised me too. In the past 5 years, pretty much every comparison video raved about LED's and how they're smashing the competition. I never thought so either. HID will be the king of lighting for long range illumination, and durability for a while. The biggest shortcomings for LED at the moment i think are quality of product offerings and how they function (color spectrum, poor long range, power consumption). They can say LED elements last a million hours if they want. The fact is that everyone who's bought an LED light bar or whatever has had them fail LONG before its time. If it's not the LED/electronics failing, water leaks and your light rots from the inside out, or there's condensation on the inside that corrodes the reflector, or LED's dying off one at a time. This next one is the big one for me. Pretty much all LED lights are narrow spectrum lighting..very narrow compared to halogen and HID. Anyone who knows how our eyes and color vision works knows this is a bad bad thing if you're adding the extra lighting to be able to see things in front of you especially out in the distance. Every LED video out there mentions lower power consumption...yeah, lower power use in the crappy little led lights. I have some pretty high output LED flashlights that'll kill 4 18650 batteries in very short time. For offroad car lighting, if you're building an LED setup to compete with 2 or 3 55w HID offroad lights, you'll need to a giant LED light bar that sucks up 300-400watts. Where LED absolutely wins though is for up close, flood/spill lighting. If you want to light up everything directly in front (in close), in all directions, a small LED setup will beat HID and halogen.

While led’s are great because of their low power consumption...the optics they require (high quality reflectors & lenses) to throw light any distance make them cost prohibitive. At this point I prefer retro fitting my old 6” halogen daylighters to hid. Much less expensive and they perform just as good as the led bars my buddies spent thousands on.

this would be interesting. and it's gotta be the actual lights in use, not the drawing. Maybe setting them up on a rack and shining down a road with some things on the sides, some things in the distance, some things way down long range. If you still have them, it would be cool to see the original Daylighters with the 150w Par46 sealed beam spots in there too.

Hi. I just wanna add. HID: needs few seconds to peak light. Only few. LED: needs few minutes to reduce brightness to protect overheating. The most cons of HID is the wiring and other components needed for it to work.

The reason leds are so white is because as you bring the color down it produces less light. You lose half the light bringing it down to yellow. I don't know the physics behind it but I find they still hurt my eyes even at a lower color temperature. I had Amber diode dynamics stage 6 and they still hurt.

The state truck l drive, a 2019 Peterbilt, has an led spot light mounted on the right mirror with a cab control. A big issue with using the spotlight in the snow is, depending on how hard it’s snowing, that spotlight can be useless in five minutes because gets caked with ice. I’m looking to get auxiliary driving lights for my 95 Ford F-150, my main commuter vehicle in the winter and l don’t want that issue. A couple of times a month while on the night shift, l’ll come across wild horses on or near the highway and l barely see them with the stock headlights which lenses are yellowed and tarnished.
