As a Roma fan, the 2018 transfer window's effects are still felt till this day. We somehow went from Champions League regulars and occasional title pretenders to struggling to get to the Europa League in the span of two seasons and in perpetual rebuilding. Monchi's mistakes were quite shocking and a lot of questions remain to be answered. Like why he preferred Pastore to Ziyech, who got extremely close to Roma thanks to Totti's efforts. Totti also ended up resigning after feeling like he wasn't listened to.

Selling your best players? Handicapping yourself by buying older ones with no resell value? Signing famous players who are way past their prime on free transfers, but paying them enormously inflated wages? Struggling to score goals and flirting with relegation? If it wasn't for all the success and the titles that Sevilla have had in the past twenty or so years, I would think that you are talking about my beloved misery - Everton Football Club.

"Ultimately when clubs are hyper dependant on developing players, selling them for substancial fees and then replacing them there is very little margin for error. Put simply if you keep selling all your best players it is very difficult not to eventually become a worse team." Idk if I'm alone on that, but Sevilla in La Liga kinda reminds me of Braga in Portugal, they are trying to break the big 3 clubs' dominance (Porto, Benfica and Sporting), but haven't won a league title yet. When it matters most, Braga loses it all in the final third of the season, when it's always so promising from them when they actually achieve great results against the Big Three. This season in Portugal might bring a surprise champion, let's see.

Exactly, real sociedad got quite a lot of money selling players, specially with the 70 millions with Isaac, but they still had to buy really cheap Villareal bought cheap was well, despite of reach the semifinals of the Champions Betis struggled a ton to be able to fit all of their Squad at the beggining of the season Barça selled a lot of pasive incoming for get money at short time, but with a choice that Will be bad at long terms Real Madrid have barely speended money this last 3-4 years even if they won several trophies Sevilla: sold a ton of players, including kounde for around 60 millions euros, but barely bought any player ( and that's why they are soo fucked Up ) And i could go on, the rest of the teams are way, worse than Barça and Madrid, only rayo vallecano and Osasuna are making kind of a underdoogs, Osasuna because they have a decent team without the necesity of hire more players and rayo vallecano becuase they play football really Well, look how they won agains Madrid, playing better than 80% of the teams

I've been a Sevilla fan for a while now. This year has been chaotic and just plain bad. Januzaj is just baffling, doesn't care if he plays or not. His hands may been tied this summer but Monchi did a bad job, that's just a fact. The fanbase would agree. The transfers were just made like 5 days before the start of the league. Even free transfers as Isco, Januzaj or loans like Dolberg. It was just weird, so weird. The money they have is nothing compared to premier league clubs (wich is a big big problem in my opinion). Like you said at the end. Relegation teams in Premier League can pay way more. The Isco transfer get's a lot of laughs now, but almost all fans would agree that he and Bounou were by far the best players in the squad. Ocampos was so bad last season that everyone was happy to get him out. It's sad to see that a club like this with an amazing stadium and amazing fans is doing this bad. For my the midfield is by far the biggest problem, energy is what they lack the most. That's as clear as day. the aging midfield is sad to watch.

Exactly nailed the point that clubs like sevilla that operate on developing youth/buying cheap players to then sell for profit in top leagues really suffers in the modern game. It works for clubs in leagues they dominate I.E Benfica,Porto, Ajax & PSV. But is becoming very hard for clubs in leagues like the Serie A, La liga, Ligue 1, bundesliga. Ajax & Benfica are able to sell there best players and still regularly win the league because they are so much ahead of the rest of the competition financially, but try doing that in a league where you have the top dogs and they are the people you're selling to and you are in for a hard time.

The Elche situation further east is pretty much of similar magnitude of points loss pace, but is probably even more baffling as the roster's not that old, most of La Liga's been selling talent and not buying (getting worse) while Elche's been standing still which should have lifted the team which finished 13th upwards. Instead, Elche's got 4 points in 20th, 12 points behind safety which is Sevilla in 17th. The problem might be how Elche's owner is an Argentinian who is really fond of signing Argentinian players for only a bit more than River Plate or Boca Juniors selling "We're in La Liga" as the recruitment point in a league where you can't rapidly recruit young non-naturalized Argentinians of any quality whether on free transfer or a fee which have the highest potential for improving the squad and squad finances. Naturalized dual nationals, he can easily sign and there's no shortage of them in Spain whether they grew up in Spain or moved then naturalized as footballers. Edit: Had to explain some stuff about the Argentinians.

Hi. Sevilla fan here. Gladly (or sadly) surprised how well informed many of the comments are. I'm 28 and I've never seen my team doing this. Here in Sevilla nobody understand how this is happening. There is no anger on the air, just a feeling of depression cos we all feel this is going to end with us going down to league2. EVERYONE knew there was no point on starting the season with Lopetegui, the team plays no football at all, we've been signing 30 olds players with no physic whatsoever, just short guys with a lot of skills but zero speed. Now we bring back Sampaoli (I really thought this was a joke) who is the last guy you can hire for this job. He wants to play with the ball always, passing from GK to CB NEVER kicking the ball out. This cost us 1 point yesterday, and Sampaoli is NEVER going to change his orders wherever we are in the table. This is a problem, and since yesterday people has lost all the faith in him. But its not his fault. We've been thinking we had the best sport director (i dont know if you guys call it that way) but this summer signings have been the worse in our history. That is the most frustrsting thing of all, we've been winning all this trophies and reached Champions three years in a row (first time ever) and we have NO MONEY AT ALL and we always sign loan players 2 days prior market close. Meanwhile, seeing this fckn circus, former president Jose Maria Del Nido is trying to come back. And he will, is just a matter of months, but because of this there is a war inside the club. This man was in jail not so many years ago for taking money that didnt belong to him, and he has a very difficult kind of character. Some fans wants him back because they think he will put order into things, but some others (me included) things he just wants power, hes anxious about it, and you can see it everytime he speaks. Like I said, there is no stop to the change and he will be president, we'll see where this lead us to.... Thanks for the video and the comments, nice to see some people caring about us a little bit.

Monchi put the investment in the youth team and was ahead of the game in bringing in Brazilian talent and flogging them on, but soon enough bigger teams copy the strategy and you lose that niche. He hasn't evolved in 10 years and thus Sevilla have fallen away. Their youth identity is non-existent and the South American market is barren without serious cash now. 15 years ago Sevilla would have snuck Enzo Fernandez, Julian Alvarez and/or Endrick for £5-10m, now that costs you £100m+.

Hmm i like the video a lot, I’d say that Valencia is also up there in terms of importance being that they have won the super cup as well as la liga since 2000. They are comparable to Sevilla

Great video Alfie, I think in this series we’ve seen a lot of malicious and fraudulent owners and board members, yet in this instance I can’t help but think they were good faith in their transfers but just royally screwed it up and weren’t aligned with the club.

Man I don't wanna think where Sampaoli is even gonna after they sack him. They don't want him in Chile, they don't want him in his home Argentina, they don't want him in France after screwing up the Champions League for Marseilles, and now the won't want him in Spain. He truly is out of allies or people that care for him at this point.

Apparently Sevilla are turning into a monster in the Europa League ,because they are still a disaster in La Liga, even if they are in 12th place in La Liga, they are 2 points away from the relegation zone and they do not seem able (in October 2023) to qualify in European competitions.

Well done, Alfie. Now do the impossible - a "what the hell is going on" on a team that looks like (according to league position) they are doing well, and have knocked out a Premier League side from the Fa Cup, but frankly, we are playing like inconsistent bollocks, and have been all season. It is through more good luck than management (what's that? - Darren Moore) that we're in 4th. Yes, I would love a "what the hell is going on at Sheffield Wednesday", please.

Karma. After the disgrace of the 2013/2014 Europa league final and how much they were helped, the referee keeping them alive throughout the match and letting the gk save all penaltis 1 meter away from the line at the end, they're probably cursed forever. As they should.
