The Mission: To save a stripped out and forgotten D-Day Airplane from the Scrapyard and get her flying for the 75th anniversary of D-Day (June 6th, 2019).
The Timeframe: We have only 6 months to get the DC-3 flying.
The Reason: This airplane is only a handful left in the world that actually flew on D-Day. We are getting her flying in the memory of people who lost their lives that day, June 6th, 1944.
The Cost: Everything we have.
I hope you AvGeeks enjoy the episode!

Just to let the folks at home know, I was the lucky bidder of Mikey's artwork at the CHAA banquet, and it is currently hanging in our maintenance hangar where all of our volunteer 'plane savers' who work on our Harvards can see it :-) In a twist of fate, the image that Mikey used as a basis for his artwork was actually done by me nine years ago as some concept artwork just after we started the Harvard 20304 project. Thanks again Mikey! See you at Oshkosh!

Episode 133! I have not missed a single episode! It has only improved since then. It is amazing to see the progress, the hurdles over come and the organizational skills to put everyone together! A massive undertaking. Kudos and thanks to the team! The volunteers have been phenomenal, and their willingness to be on camera offering a vicarious opportunity for those of us who are unable to be there. Having been in radio, and a part of putting daily (week day) 1/2 hr programs together I am also impressed at your commitment, creativity and passion to see this project presented in a daily format. Mikey, that is a huge accomplishment!! To everyone who is behind the scenes, don't think we have forgotten about you either. Congratulations for getting this far, and may the energy, the drive, the passion and the enjoyment for you and your entire team carry you through to a successful end of this chapter of DTD's life. May each new page of her logs be filled with safe, reliable flights. Thanks again!!!

D-Day stripes ! what a great idea,that is going to look spectacular,this sure is one unique paint job and all done by hand with basic materials,Stella looks good with or without a window frame and always brightens up our day with her lovely smile. Thanks for showing us that lovely shiny Harvard too and what a great museum that is. Your artwork is getting famous Mikey and what a kind gesture that was to help raise funds for the Harvard Association. We look forward to seeing the second engine runs soon.

Invasion stripes! Minor suggestion that I noticed from my drawings when putting them on, a thin black stripe on the outer white bands to have them stand out, similar to the demo picture, otherwise the white will blend in with the Department of Transport livery. Unless there's an off-white paint that will be used for the bands to have the contrast. Definitely curious if the Type C roundel will also be added!

Jobey Butt I can answer that. We would be cold, wet and miserable while struggling with cold hands on tools to get it finished on time. Thanks to ENA and their students and staff we are flying (no pun intended) thru all the difficult tasks while working in a brightly lit, clean comfortable space. Today was miserable outside but we were all comfy inside. Oh man, what a difference that makes.

@@Hildrix, Yes, he was killed with a concussion bomb in his flat, another terrible loss of the war. I have quite a few of the records, most with Noble, they were some of my Dad's favorites. I have two 78 copies of this tune, one with a chunk out of it, the other cracked., darn, this record can cost up to $1000.00 on Ebay! It's one of the absolute best classics of the era. If you listen carefully, I think the understated piano in the instrumental part is Noble himself, the more lead piano part is Jacobson, their usual player.

@jimdickinson3686
@jimdickinson3686 5 жыл бұрын
OK, Here's an OFFER for you. DTD's livery cannot be called "conventional or usual" in any sense, since you are already modifying the colors let's take it a bit farther. I suggest you substitute Blue, probably a Dark Blue, for the black in the invasion stripes, something maybe similar to or darker than the Dark Blue used on US Navy late war fighter planes like the Hellcat. I WILL buy you the blue paint. I will pay for it at our local Cloverdale Paint Store, here in Bellingham, WA, USA. It will be their wonderful Marine Enamel, will arrange for it to be picked up in one of their Montreal Stores, as long as it's blue, you can select the shade. Two gallons will likely do the job. The Blue will be for more attractive than the black, and will mitigate the color clash between the Teal Rudder and the Transport Canada colors, in my colorful opinion. Let me know. Jim

Another great episode Mikey. Looking forward to tomorrows episode. We just had a sad day here. My wifes Grandma Winifred Priestley passed away today. She was one of the last surviving land army girls who worked on the farms driving the tractors, doing the harvests and all the other jobs the farm labourers did before they went to war. Winifred was 96 years old. She also survived the Sheffield blitz. Today the world lost an angel.

For the stripe. I used a laser on a tripod in the locked head position to mark a line on the fuel strakes on my Velocity XL doors at the correct angle for cutting. Works great on anything that you need a straight line at any angle, just adjust the tripod with head locked or floating. My 3 cents. Great work everyone has done and will be doing. Keep it up, it will fly for sure. !_!

Nice to see the tail surfaces all rigged and ready. I really enjoyed Danny's Harvard tour, but was surprised to see the mag switch in the Harvard set to "Both" instead of "Off". I would think that is bad practice even if there is no fuel in the plane.

Hi Mikey and all PlaneSavers fans! Mike from the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association here... we just want to say thanks once again to Mikey for what you're doing for DTD and for how you've elevated the profile of warbird and vintage airplane restoration and made fashionable again, working to preserve these historic, iconic aircraft. Remember it was kids likely the same age as ENA's own students who trained on and earned their wings on Harvards like ours to be able to fly not only the Spitfires and Mustangs, but also the Dakotas and the Lancasters (among many, many other types) that eventually helped to win the war. So, so many of them never returned. We at CHAA try to commemorate and pay tribute to those airmen and women by FLYING our Harvards at shows, displays and flyins just as you will be flying DTD and displaying her at Oshkosh. Thanks for what you're doing with DTD and have done for us with your kind and generous donation to our own restoration effort. Mikey, you're the best!

Lots of people than everyone disappeared? sounds like a Winnipeg city operation. Don't forget, when you paint the white over the red, it'll bleed through and turn pink. You have to seal it with something. On my red plastic models I use a gloss clear (for the sealer), then light grey(for a primer) and finish with white.Or just strip the red and black portions off, might be quicker.

I taught parascending on, what used to be, RAF West Malling, near Maidstone, Kent, England, Where Guy Gibson, of Dambusters, 617 Squadron, when he was on night fighters, bought a black Labrador puppy from a local farmer, for 15 years and watched a Harvard being restored in one of the hangars. Another iconic and beautiful aircraft. On its last day, when it left for its permanent home, the pilot barrel rolled it down the length of the runway !! Amazing.....

Mikey, any idea if the guy who recreated DTD's D-Day scheme on a FlightSim DC-3 model plans to make that repaint available to others in the FlightSim community?? I'd Love to Fly it in FSX (2:44)

Mikey- Out of curiosity do any of the Mcbryan's except Joe have a pilots license? How many more years does Joe have left flying commercially?

Have you considered stripping the paint off a small section of the plane? maybe her old WW2 camo is still under there somewhere.

Hi Mikey instead of black strips should use Buffalo green. Great show I like the rudder that colour as it shows the link to Buffalo
