Last year, I made the switch from Hex Logic to Venzo. I've noticed that Venzo pads tend to last much longer, maintain their shape better, and are easier to clean for some reason. Additionally, I really appreciate the cone-shaped design, especially on the 5 and 6-inch pads. This design feature provides a safety margin when working on tight areas, preventing the backing plate from causing any damage. The slight increase in diameter of the pad edge compared to the backing plate offers a buffer zone, which is particularly useful on front bumpers with steep angles. When it comes to polishing, I've found that using the white Venzo pad is effective on soft to moderate surfaces, while the yellow one works better on harder clear coats. Great video, Jon!

Last year, I switched from the Hex Logic to Rupes. I find the Rupes pads last much longer, hold their shape and clean up much easier for some reason. I also really like to cone shaped design, especially on the 3 inch pads. When you’re working on tight areas, there is safety margin keeping the backing plate away from doing damage. That small amount of the pad edge being larger diameter than the backing plate provides a margin of error, especially on front bumpers with steep angles. For polishing, I find using the white Rupes pad works on soft to moderate, and the yellow for harder clear coats. Great video Jon!

Great overview as always. It also depends a lot on the vehicles you most often work on. On Asian soft clear coat you can almost do a full correction and finish with Rupes yellow and go with the white for showcar finish. But if you need a bit more cut you will ruin the car with the Rupes Green. Scholl cutting works better, then followed up with Rupes and it's perfect. So, sometimes you need to combine a couple of brands. It just requires testing.

its the technology of spiderpads that help with softer paints, flushes the residue inside and keeps surface cleaner for sensitive paints, test rupes yellow vs orange spider neo and you will see.

It’s Flex all the way for me. I’ve been using the PXE for the last couple of months and the Flex pads are incredibly durable. I tried the Rupes equivalents and they tend to crumble fairly quickly. I’ve just bought the XFE as well so I’ll be using nothing but Flex pads with that too. Having just those two polishers pretty much has me covered. The charger accommodates both batteries. It’s just a shame the PXE batteries can’t be used on the XFE but I can live with that as the two polishers are fantastic bits of kit. Jon, thanks for the recommendation. I can’t see me needing anything else now (but I do want the new Flex light now!).

Having had many years of car cleaning when the 'standard' was a shampoo-and-sponge, T-Cut and a paste wax, by hand with any old cloth, I've moved to 'machine polishing', which in itself is a misnomer. I went a bit mad with purchasing, and have a Kestrel DA and a Rotary and storage tubs of unused pads and backing plates from 25-180mm. What bugs me is the lack of colour-code consistency. I have Chinese pads, multi-pad Amazon buys with 20-30 of mixed sizes and surfaces, eBay bargains, no-names, big-names and it's a headache. Early on, I bought some thick, 150mm Flexi-pads, but printed on the back is 'Not suitable for DA Machines'. I have no idea why not. I'm almost yearning for the simpler days of a bucket, sponge, shampoo and a 'chammy'.

I would love for you to take a look at the Americana Global pads. They seem to be really recommended by a lot of pros, and one key element in their design are the holes they run for cooling so that the pads stay cooler during longer work sessions. The holes are cut like the orbital sanding sheets, that line up with the holes on the backing pads. This allows for the Americana Global pads to breathe and cool themselves while spinning and in contact with the paint. Check them out, and let us know what you think, I’m very curious of your opinion.

Hey, no problem, if they’re not in ur market then don’t worry about it. I do have a follow up, I’m just starting with my foray into more serious DIY detail work (especially since I bought some Avalon King Armor IX Ceramic Coating). To get both my cars prepped for the coating I want to do a proper job, now and going forward. I have two vehicles, a 2017 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring, in Gunmetal Grey, and a 2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe in a kind of Pearl White (with a lot of metallic flake in it). I plan on going through the usual steps of washing, claying, iron removal, and then paint correction. For the paint correction I’m going with the Meguires M110 compound, followed by either M205 or M210. What pads would you recommend for these cars? Are they considered to have soft or hard clear coat? Should I try to remove the orange peel effect, or just go for swirl scratch removal, and not worry about the orange peel? Please let me know, if u have a moment, thanks! Just to follow up a bit with more detail. The Mazda used to be garage kept, but has been parked outside since the start of the Wuhan Flu, and the Civic has always been parked outdoors (both in Northeastern PA, which gets deep into each of the 4 seasons - meaning rain, very hot and humid, to snow and very cold and dry). This is also a heavily salted road area in the winter. Neither car has harsh defects through the paint like deep key scratches or accidents. The Mazda has a bit more general wear and tear,. Since the Civic is newer it looks like less paint damage, but under a light I see tons of swirls and scratches from car washes and general rubbing up against the car of clothes, boxes, etc.

scrub it out with a brush (rupes claw is nice) after each set on the machine... After 10-15 sets roughly change... dunno. its just a finger in the wind, because its more down to the abrasive and the clearcoat your cuting how the pad behaves... You also dont want to overheat the pad because it can crumble up or rip away from backing plate... you can after 10-15 sets take pad off and flush it out with cold water to cool it. I have done a video on this subject I think called how many pads do you need to polish a car where I discuss all this. watch this video Sam kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKSykoSfYs2WrZY

Koch M3 is designed to de-hollogram (to remove buffer trails its very hard to install buffer trails with it)

Hi Jon, so much information to take in. I have just purchased a Das8 with 5 and 3 inch backing plates. Trying to buy Flex pads in both sizes is seeming to be very hard. Am I OK changing the size of the backing plates to either 5.5 or 6 inch plates for better pad choice? Also.... What compounds best suit the flex pads? It will mainly be used on a silver metallic Jaguar XF. Many thanks in advance, Garry. P. S. Just signed up to the IOA Course 👍

Garry so Koch H9 F6 M3 (high cut, med cut, finishing) are what I tend to recomend combos up with flex purples and oranges. stick with a 5 inch plate and 3 inc plate for your DAS8 mate. use with 5 inch and 3 inch flex pads. on the main channel look at my DA15 and DA12 review (1 video reviewnig both tools) I show the pads. If in2detailing are out of stock try slims. Polishing Pads tinyurl.com/y8j8nhsp Polishes tinyurl.com/y9yd5zzx

John - question... does the battery from the flex blower on the rack, work with the PXE Nano polisher..? I’m told it doesn’t, which is a bore. Would love to know. Great insight to pads and it’s something I should try. I’ve generally stuck with Rupes and Lake Country, so again, in need to check the Flex pads out.

Pretty sure it does not.. so they have 18v range and 10.8v range. PXE uses 10.8v XFE uses 18v blower 18v... ironically the flex workshop LED light supports 18v and 10.8

Hi Jon, I have spent literally hours trying to work out which machine pads /polish to buy. I need help!! I like the look of either Flex pads or Koch Chemie products. If you had the choice of any of their pads or compounds which would you choose for a one stage process? (I'll be using the in2detailing DA8 on a car with medium to soft paint). Cheers!

Yo Chris. theres no set piece that would be correct for any sceanrio.. in other words you might need to change it up etc.. but Flex purple pads with Koch F6 for heard to medium paints where you want to work cut a bit more.. of F6 with flex Orange pads on soft paints or to gloss up more.

Hi John. Mate I love your videos never stop! May I ask a quick question. I've seen all your videos and obviously not learnt a thing! I've polished my motor bike, with a Rupes yellow pad on a DA, and Cartech 9000 finishing polish. The paint only has light swirls and very few scratches, so I thought a one step would work. I have had to do nearly 3 sets to show (very good) results, but when looking with my light pen after it shows those haze lines coming off the light (sorry don't know the technical term).... is that me putting them in with my fluffy microfiber clothes?? I wipe off polish well, then use a little IPA, and then buff with another microfiber. What you think? Regards and thank you Jerry.
@forensicunplugged4295
@forensicunplugged4295 2 жыл бұрын
very very hard to say. it could be your not degreasing properly. so its little oil trails that look like hazey buffer trails. impossible to say whats going on. but rupes yellow pads should finish out well with a good finishing polish. and cartech should be good but Ive not used it.

Declan Flaherty mate, what you say makes financial sense but not mechanical sense. When it comes to polishing with a DA, the “pattern” counts. You’ll find smaller machines with smaller backing plates for this reason. The 12/15/21mm offset isn’t conducive to effective polishing with pad sizes smaller than about 5” (125mm). To put a 35mm pad on a 15mm throw machine will create a horrendous polishing pattern which will be ineffective and create more work for yourself. Ergo different size machines exist for a reason. Different kettle of fish for rotary, only speed and ergonomics play a part. Smaller pads require higher speed and typically a smaller machine to make it easier to handle.
