Haywire Mite seems like a really good choice for removing Ripples of Undeath. I've played it in my Loam Pox decks plenty of times, since it's such a good card in general, and can be tutored with Saga or returned with Takenuma. The incidental lifegain/chump is hardly negligible with seat-of-the-pants pox gaming, and I actually really like that it lets you Smallpox after a Saga goes to fruition without having to sacrifice one of your constructs.

It wasn't quite 12 outs on the last flip, because smallpox would have killed him as well from paying life to ripples + the one damage smallpox deals. But it was still unbelievably unlucky.

Haven't seen pox work out so well since a while, between this league and ThrabenU recent video on land destruction lands I feel like this kind of decks are oddly wekl positioned. So R&D has said they’re moving away from upkeep triggers and to beginning of Main Phase triggers (saga step). Gavin was just on Good Luck High Five and said that at one point they were considering eliminating the upkeep entirely and eratta-ing all of those triggers to be saga-esque triggers

It creates a bunch of interactions that aren’t intuitive, and is pretty hard to explain to less experienced players (like a bunch of “you’re making that up” moments), and having to make decisions without information is fundamentally less fun. The juice isn’t worth the sneeze Gavin said that if they were starting magic from scratch, there wouldn’t be an upkeep, but they aren’t going to eliminate the upkeep, because it both fundamentally changes a _lot_ of cards, and because people like taking extra upkeeps (a lot of Johnnys and Jennys out there with weird decks)

My first ever stream, mind you this was before Kenji was a known name, and having a webcam was unheard of. My first deck was Mono-B Pox. It played the general list but also relied mostly on Leyline of the Void and Helm.

Haywire Mite is tutorable with Saga and can exile Ripples if necessary. Takenuma could in theory also get back the mite if desperately needed. It also hates on the one ring. And the 2 life accidental lifegain on Mite might come in clutch in such close matches like the ones today. Awesome Deck as usual. Thank you.

For emergency getting rid of your own Ripples you could run a 'Haywire Mite' mainboard... Sure you run the chance of milling it out but that feels like the best answer that doesn't get in the way of what the deck's doing... Otherwise you're left with 'Braids, Arisen Nightmare' (maybe not the best addition, but it'd be fun!) or 'Souls of the Lost's additional cost also fits the bill...

Elixir of Immortality & Campfire are both good options for Ripples. I like them over Thran Foundry because they both mitigate the life problems that Ripples runs into if you want to get lots of cards back. They are both relevant against a bit of on board pressure buying you more time to stabilize, or help close the chance they could piece together the damage to finish you off. Campfire in Pauper is a brutal shutdown of aggro decks. Elixir has the benefit of being usable multiple times. Haywire Might isn't a terrible consideration for the Saga package. I imagine you crumble pretty hard against active artifact/enchantment engines. It also is a creature that can attack in empty boards. The Rack is always a thought for how to win when ahead. Bandit's Talent is a new Rack effect. It discards a card, and for 1 mana more it starts draining life, then 4 mana and it starts drawing you cards to close out games. Cling to Dust could be a card worth running. It's card advantage or an answer to recurring creatures. Anything with escape/flashback/etc gets better with Ripples since it's such an effective way at getting it there. I want to see a BUG selfmill list with things like Uro and Endurances in the main.

i feel like one or two copies of souls of the lost would be something to consider mid/late game once ripples has done enough card selection. there'd be tons of lands in the yard so it'd be a good beater to close out the game, and since you have to sacrifice a permanent for souls, you can sac the ripples so you don't deck yourself.

This feels like a deck that might enjoy barrowgoyf. Plays bad with smallpox itself, but it loads your yard pretty good and the lifelink gets you stable where ripples can really chew up your life total. That said, then you'd be looking to play more creatures so it would end up being a fairly different deck, so maybe not.

On ripples decking yourself, Id personally do a package of like witches cottage and endurance. Might need more bayous to cast it but that package has the least awful fail state I think. One card is very legacy playable and the other is a swamp.

Pausing in round 3 to say those map tokens could have been relevant against Dress Down, since it could put a +1/+1 counter on the construct to keep it alive through the enchantment. Yes, you would lose some overall power, but having 1-2 of the constructs survive the effect would be huge

According to a comment LSV made in a recent video, he thinks that if you were designing Magic from scratch again you wouldn't have an upkeep step. In recent sets, design has trended away from using it--only 2 cards with the word "upkeep" in OTJ, 2 in ACR, 3 in MH3 (1 reprint), 4 in BLB, and many are homages to older cards like Darkstar Augur. Not sure what the reasoning is, but I like knowing what I draw before making big decisions so I'm not complaining--plus, less time spent with a die on my library to remind me of a trigger.

Potentially better except that I think bitter triumph is probably easier to use from behind. Both aren’t great, but feed the cycle requires that you’ve executed your plan somewhat, triumph just requires stability with either hand size or life total

Ripples of Undeath seems a very interesting choice that may solve my "problem" in my pox version (i am having problems "drawing" cards). I stopped playing bg loam to start playing mono black, because loam is very slow, and many opponents also playing wasteland that 1st game many times hurt, and Surgical that kills our 2nd game. So i switched to a mono black version, and using a new couple cards that are being great, but something is missing, and Riples may solve it. Thanks for the great content and bringing new ideas/solutions to try to adapt. If you're serious about being successful in tournaments, you should spend some time piloting the decks you want to beat. If you play for fun, it doesn't matter and just do what makes you happy.

Ripples happening in the Main Phase is due to what my friends and I determined as to make it not an instant Dredge engine in the upkeep. If it was Upkeep, it would allow those cards flipped to be Dredged out instantly. It's also to prevent abuses from some other interactions. This is speculation, of course, but it's nearest what we can think, because it would blow Dredge wide the hell open.
