That "playing to submission" is an idea I learned from your channel, and my blue winrate has soared since I started using it. So Thank you!
@alabasterleech5 ай бұрын
22:45 They didn't actually give it a blue border, it just has very ocean blue art and is borderless so it looks like it has a blue border. I personally prefer the old-border printing for exactly this reason.
@Kicklance5 ай бұрын
Old? There has never been a non-artifact nonland colorless card before the 2003 "Modern" frame. And even then it looked the exact same as Nulldrifter does. I agree with your sentiment that the ocean backdrop wasn't best however.
@drpibisback76805 ай бұрын
@@Kicklance I presume they meant the "retro frame" treatment of Nulldrifter from the set, which invented a silver with blue speckles border for colorless cards precisely because there was never a colorless non-artifact before the modern frame.

0:58 this is correct. Phyrexian Dreadnought received the same errata as Mox Diamond when 6th Edition rules came around and so it wouldn’t even come into play until you first sacrificed a number of creatures with power equal to 12 or greater. This errata was removed in 2007 along with a bunch of other power level errata (Remember Flash? Same thing). Before the 2007 errata the main way to cheat in Dreadnought was Illusionary Mask which was a strong deck in Vintage in the early 2000s.

Sweeeet I have been playing this on MTGO for a bit, glad to see it here. This deck plays like a true tempo and control deck, with surprise huge finishers. Very satisfying to play. Couple differences from what I've been playing - minus 1 Basic Island plus 1 Mystic Sanctuary, minus 1 stifle plus 1 Murktide
@jacklatorre41675 ай бұрын
Plays control vs combo and aggro but can also speed up when needed. Unfortunately, pretty bad to control lists unless you get under them with stifle. A Narset in the board isn't a bad idea, Coval has 2 Hullbreachers in the board which I'm keeping my eye on for this vid. Doesn't play great with Dress Down but hey, neither does Murktide.

Regarding the round 1 discussion comparing to martial arts, and specifically. "losing is the worst thing" - It is important to remember the old "who's the beat down?" article. As control against some combo decks it can be right to tap out for a threat in the early turns because of you don't kill them you will die and sometimes you just need them to not have it that turn because if they do you are dead anyway.
@Fyrefrye5 ай бұрын
It's worth mentioning that the time when the control player should tap out for a threat is the game when they don't think their control options will be sufficient. It can still be correct to hold back as control and dismantle your opponent, but specific draws or specific matchups where your typical control effects don't line up correctly with their combo can lead to you having to switch roles.
@NatePrawdzik5 ай бұрын
Leveling up in Magic goes something like this: lvl 1) Understand tempo, learn how to play for the submission. Think about how good you are at turning things sideways and winning fast. lvl 2) Understand permission, learn how to play for inevitability. Think about how smart you are. Scoff at those players who only know how to tap out opponents. lvl 3) Understand both strategies. Shift tactics based on the situation. Winning proves your skill, losing proves your luck. lvl 4) Focused only on optimizing, ego no longer matters. "Good" vs " bad" morph into "optimal" vs "suboptimal" while "winning" and "losing" become data points in your feedback loop.

At 10:02 you begin talking about how "good players play to submission" and etc. I think this is a great way to phrase it. The other way, which I've heard before, is: When you are ahead, get MORE ahead. If you have 7 answers in hand for their one card per turn, and already have inevitability, what is the rush? Sculpt more! This is how I approach playing Lands, embracing the "control" side of the "combo-control" archetype.

At the end of Round 1, I'm guessing the opponent had too many Red Elemental Blasts? Since unlike Pyroblast you can't just dump those on any target, and they likely brought in all they had in the board seeing you were naturally at least partially blue. That and maybe some Phyrexian Devourers as they are running Soul Cauldron so a one of Devourer for a sneaky extra combo kill makes sense to me? Only cards I can think of that make sense for that situation that Painter would run as they never had 6 mana to run out the Devourer. The only play that makes me unsure of this is them not fighting over the Force of Will, although that could have just been a 'lazy' play where they assumed the Welder could always get it from their graveyard at any time anyway, so spending the blast there wasn't worth it, but then you never play another blue spell and they die.

@twhite96155 ай бұрын
I've been playing mtg for decades and I'm still confused about interactions like this. Evoking the creature is somehow stopped by a Dress Down or DK Thrull? Wouldn't the entire ability resolve before it checks for other static abilities? But you are saying that paying for evoke is an ability from the card being in hand but when it hits the battlefield the second sentence of the ability doesn't trigger... I thought abilities couldn't be broken up like that. You have to trigger it in full right?

@chadoftoons5 ай бұрын
my silly opinion: permanents costing upwards of 6 mana should always have abillities be on cast as long as the card is "Cast from hand without alternative costs". Would let control decks win faster and also encourage them to do so, (else they might get screwed by a random abillity) avoid the 1 trillion ways you can cheese out things being the way a creature is played make sure that no matter what reaching a long game plan has a reward for any deck unless that is accounted for with abillity based counterplay and also let a gruul deck do something in the older formats without shoe-horning in what feels like half a stacks deck. I feel like its either on cast triggers or a future of ever increasing cards with the text "Cannot be countered"
