I've been PREACHING THIS FOR YEARS. A pull thru is not "sharpening " a knife. Literally all its doing is stripping off metal to a shape leaving nothing more then a wire edge that fails as soon as you cut anything. There is no micro serrations in the edge because as you said the scratches are running the wrong way.

They get a knife more than sharp enough for 99% of people. If they didn't work, they wouldn't be used. Anyone that uses stones, plates or systems is in the 1% and they're just sharpening for fun, not function. That edge they spend 40 minutes working won't look like that after a few uses. Most people that own knife collections and sharpen them to hair whittling don't use the vast majority of their knives, it's a hobby.

@@ThaitopYT He's not asking you to trust HIM, dummy, he's pointing out that they're so popular and have been in use for so long, that you're trusting hundreds of thousands of people, or you can go by what one KZbinr says. They're perfectly fine for old kitchen knives and blades you actually use for hard work. I wouldn't use the carbide unless it's a hopeless case anyway, but the ceramic rods are little different from what millions of people use to touch up or hone their blades every day, from chefs to serious knife enthusiasts. People even use ceramic mugs for this purpose, the ceramic sides on pull-throughs are perfectly fine.

Used these decades ago before I learned how to sharpen properly. Which is the problem, most people don't know how to properly sharpen a knife free hand on a stone. So for those people, a pull through is better than nothing.

My left ear really enjoyed that intro 😆 No worries at all, can still hear everything fine. Is the RØDE Wireless Go microphone set to Split or Merged? I would just set the microphone to Merged as long as you are inside where there isn't a lot of noise so it records in stereo. That way you don't have to mess around that much to Balance the Split mode in editing from the left and right channels or do the recovery in worst case scenario.

@@NeevesKnives No worries at all. It can sometimes be a little pain to set up any new audio equipment. Even the "plug and go" USB microphones (if one is an audio snob) take some tweaking by running them through audio software like Audacity, Adobe Audition, or any DAW (digital audio workstation) before importing the audio into the Video workstation/editing software. My biggest advice will be to just do some quick 10-30 second tests to make sure the microphone/s are set up the way you want them, save the profiles and they "should" be ready to go. If there is anything you need DM or Email me. And I'll jump on Discord or Zoom or whatever. I bet you have everything figured out in no time, could have just been that they unsynced for some reason when the mic & receiver/transmitter turned on. Audio issues happen to everyone. Take care Kara, and Jerad. Keep up the amazing content

So, I have a kitchen pull through sharpener from Ikea that has ceramic rollers of varying grit. I examined the pattern, and it is a lot more vertical than what you have shown here. I still prefer to hand sharpen, but in a pinch I use the pull through. Edit: I use it for kitchen knives, not my nice knives!

Great vid showing how these pull through sharpeners actually damage your knives. They do make a great ferro rod scraper (the carbide ones) but that's about it. A micro serrated edge is the best at getting the most out of any type of knife steel and making it last as long as possible. Ok, like learning to sharpen on a stone which by the way I am no good at, I have a good friend that's insane at it, it's a learned technique, for one thing you have to use the right angle I mean no DISRESPECT because I love your videos but you're not. When you have a dull edge you run it through the carbide a few times and depending on how bad it is is how much pressure you put on the blade, more pressure at first then getting lighter and lighter and like a flat stone has to be consistently straight and down, don't over do it get it to where you can feel the edge grab the skin on your fingers then do the same process through the ceramic. If you're laying the sharpener on the table like in the video you don't ever point the knife tip up and dragging down but tip down dragging up and even then it still has to be the right angle not just any angle. I don't lay mine on the table but just in the hand, I use the little Lanski poket sharpener with the diamond rod, the one you're using is trash, I have several different kinds and the Lanski is the best I've found and have had MANY of them. When I'm sharpening I'll start by dragging the kinfe through and getting lighter then on final passes I drag the sharpener under the blade barely touching it. Now don't get me wrong I understand your point completely with the scratch pattern BUT I don't have to have mine whitleing hair sharp but I can get a single pass hair shaving with the Lanski, also you can test it on a styrofoam cup, yeah sounds strange but take a simi Sharp knife and see if it'll filette the the styrofoam thin enough to see through with ease, that tells me it's sharp enough, if you want it sharper then strop it, I use mother's cheap aluminum polish which works VERY WELL. The Lanski will get CPM 154, 14c28n, S35vn, 440c, D2, but especially 154 and 14c CRASY SHARP for me at least and I have a few Benchmades, ZT's that I use it on, I've had the Spyderco Sharp Maker, watched the videos of a guy dulling a Spyderco with it then getting it hair whiteling sharp, I tried and tried and tried to no avail, I'm just no good with it, but I am pretty good with the Lanski, gave it to my friend, wish I was good with it but nope and I spent countless hrs trying. One thing though it doesn't do Spyderco S30v very well, sometimes I can get it but that steel is VERY TOUCHY with a pull through. Some steels are different, some will do better with just the carbide which by the way I try not to use much because it does take away the steel much faster and try to only use the carbide to get any nicks in the blade out and maintain my blades with the ceramic, yes I use it one my Benchmades, Bedlam which by the way it was used to skin three HOGS after sharpening it with the Lanski with ZERO PROBLEMS, yes I was hesitant but pored some alcohol on it afterwards and it was fine, by the way I actually use my knives unlike some that just store them away till they want to PET THEM LoL and I 80-90 percent of the time get my higher end knives no not art knives because I will not spend that kind of money, I get them at pawn shops flea markets like where I got the Bedlam and a Spyderco Matriarch which I've lost in a package deal for are you ready for this,,,,$175, NEVER used. Use the Lanski on my ZT's 0452, 0462, all with ZERO problems, MAYBE some of you want to cringe and cry and whine about it, sorry but it does work and like I said I understand the scratch pattern part of it, I wish that I had the feel for it on a stone but I don't, you have countless years of experience with the flat stone and are a master at it, I'm not but I feal like you've given the pull through a bad rap, for one thing you're doing it completely wrong and im positive if you saw me sharpen on a flat stone you'd tell me the same thing, I'm 55 years old and don't really have the time ir the will to spend that kind of time learning, I'm a do what works and not spend a lot of money doing it kind of guy, now I can get a scraper blade or a utility blade sharper than out of the package with a pocket dual grit flat diamond pocket sharpener because I can feel the wider edge one the it as I carry both every day, I've been doing flooring for 32 years so I know my way around a blade just a little, I have to sharpen on the run so to speak. Hey I really respect your master sharpening skills and your awesome videos, wish I had your skills but I just wanted to comment, they're not as bad as you make them sound, some are better than others like I said the one you're using might be good to just get so so edge but like any other stones or sharpening systems THERE'S A DIFFERENCE, probably due to the angle. For a on the go pull through sharpener so far the Lanski is the best I've found and NO I don't work for them but when I find an awesome product I'll put it out there. Sorry this is so long but it needed explaining, stay safe and God bless.

Hello, Jerad & Kara; Yeah, these things have limited utility at best. One thing they are good for is sharpening an axe or hatchet but not as a regular thing. Only when you are in a pinch & need to very quickly "tough up" the edge. Even then it is not a 'proper' edge for a chopping tool. They work fair on cheap chinese stainless pairing knives & such. Some 'knives' have very poor steel & those are the ones to use on pull-through sharpeners. I bought a couple, the ceramic rods are 'ok' for touching up properly sharpened edges. I use a few Scandi ground knives for wood work & carving. Usually a Scandi grind will be *not* be properly 'sharpened' w/ a 'pull-through'. The angle is all wrong for Scandis & many other knives. BTW, I think you should check out 'sword sharpening' techniques. You may be surprised by the ancient sword sharpening. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

I stopped using pull throughs about 2 years ago, I bought a full set of shapton ceramic stones expensive but I definitely don't regret it, really isn't that hard to learn how to do took me a week or so till I was able to get a mirror edge on kitchen knifes and it's infinitly sharper than a pull through. Definitely a skill worth learning it saves money in the long run. Highly recommend learning how do it its a satisfying to take something as dull as a butter knife an turn it into a razror sharp edge you could shave with, but I'd stay away from aluminium oxide whetstone / soak stones they are very very soft they are cheap which may be appealing for a beginner, but it's the opposite they are very hard to use with them being soft use to much pressure you will round the edge also need to constantly keep leveling them out after every few uses, spend extra and get ceramic like shaptons or diamond DMT are good.

To be fair, if your knife bevel was at the same angle the carbide was setup for it wouldn’t create microbevels if you could pull it through without tilting to either side, which is easier if the bevels 📐are flat against the carbide edge in the case of matching angles. When the angles match the cutting of the microbevel turns into scraping of the main bevel and properly sharpening It. Now idk how toothy the edge would be if at all but the ceramic side should be able to create that since it’s an actual grit.

I got this sharpening honing rod that has so far kept me happy, but ultimately I need to learn the free hand much better.

When you "sliced" the paper after pulling the Sebenza through, the only reason it started was you caught the sharpened party you couldn't get to with that pull through thing😂

@@NeevesKnives I have ceramic V rods I use before stropping. I destroyed a small SOG Keychain knife years ago with a pull through. I cringed when you pulled the Sebenza out!

I’m so glad to have found your channel and to have seen this video!! I had watched a video by a professional chef who used a warthog pull-through to hone his expensive Japanese knives. My first thought was that has to be doing more harm than good and you have confirmed that thought. I received more knowledge on what creates a sharp knife edge in this short video than I did in the other several hundred knife sharpening videos I have watched combined!
