What Really Causes a Migraine?

Migraines are more than just headaches. They’re pre-headaches, post-headaches, sensitivities, nausea, fatigue, and can even bring on food cravings. But most of all they are painful and frustrating for those who suffer from them. For years they were misunderstood, but now we know it comes down to two main things, your genes and your brain.
Migraines are a result of brain dysfunction. It is a problem that originates in the brain itself and is an abnormality with pain processing. There are four stages to the migraine, and only one is the headache itself.
A person starts out experiencing prodrome, this stage can last an entire day and can include yawning, trouble concentrating, increased urination, and cravings for things like chocolate. Then comes the aura, which means the migraine sufferer will see light spots, jagged lines, things like that in their vision or people might have a sensory aura like a pins and needles tingling sensation up one limb. This can last 5 to 60 minutes and is followed almost immediately by a headache.
People then can experience a headache hangover of sorts, or a postdrome, which is somewhat of a recovery phase.
Genes play a role in migraines. There are migraine causing genes and you can be genetically predisposed to having painful migraine headaches. Research has found that a reduction in a protein called CGRP, or calcitonin gene-related peptide, has been shown to correlate with migraine improvement and this research has led to more effective treatment for those who experience migraines.

@@MichaelSHartman There's chems that can do that !! But I'd add in kidney stones as well, drop the sucker into a world of pain they'd never forget and want to die from immediately, and then play some loud music for them and supper bright lights and a few fighter planes breaking the sound barrier, just for fun, they'd beg for death. When we finally give them silence and darkness in a large open room, explain to them that they're 'practice for some kunoichi (female ninja) who get bad headaches, having dated girls like this, the sucker wouldn't survive. I bought Crews brand tint level 5 wrap around sunglasses, actually for welding, and they help me, Amazon carries em, and multi color w dimming LED light bulbs that have an IR remote, red dimmed all the way is great during even med headaches, I'm in Fl, the sunburn state so sun is always an issue.

It's on par with being ill and nauseated without a migraine and vomiting. As a kid, you're pretty much "no! I don't wanna throw up!" As you get older, you associate vomiting with relief and feel so much better afterwards xD .The most annoying bit for me is when you're doing your best just to maintain and the vomit precursor feeling of liquid pooling up at the back of your mouth sets off the "run to the chamber of porcelain!" alert. You regulate your speed in vain hoping it will help on your way. But the closer you get to your target destination the more the urge increases because of your expectation of how bad it might be when you get there. Human brains are masochists. Prove me wrong lol

That's the first moment I know it's coming, and I have a hour at most to get home. Usually the Auora last 45-60 mins, then slowly it builds, by this point I sometimes find myself in tears at the thought of what lies ahead 😢. One thing that helps slightly is your Wife/Husband giving you sexual relief, I know it sounds weird...but it releases painkillers and other feel good drugs into your system. I know most partners don't have the time to do that all day, but if it helps you fall asleep after then great! I hate even talking about migraine...it makes me queasy thinking about it. I hope you all find some relief or better still a cure, as since I've had this from 10 years old I doubt we'll find a cure in my lifetime, but hopefully the younger people out their can cure this disease. Best of luck everyone, I hope every day we get a cure. 👍🏻

I've had a migraine triggered by someone's bad breath. Usually though it's food, particularly potassium in food like potatoes and bananas. But sometimes it's the preservative potassium benzoate. Chocolate is the usual suspect but not all chocolate. Hershey's chocolate is an instant migraine but Nestlé's is fine. I've learned the hard way what to avoid but just the other day I got a migraine from a pomegranate spritzer.

Yes sun light! The worst thing in the world is when you have to get up in the morning, while your head is absolutely pounding, and someone else in the house has gone around and opened every curtain and blind as far a possible so the light is literally drilling holes straight into the back of your skull through both eyeballs!!!! My family are always complaining that it is too dark in my house and they think I am a vampire too. Truely, I try to avoid driving during the day as much as possible because the glare is excruciating, but love driving at night especially long distances. I can get numbing headaches for days from being overtired from insomnia at night due to pain, but lying down with a migraine can make it worse half the time. Suffering from Migraines from about 5 years old, I've learned over the last 40 years that Headaches and Migraines are mostly my body's response to any kind of imbalance and other pain. Mid way through high school changing teenage hormones gave me Migraines daily, or it never really went away, just subsided for a while with strong pain killers. Various recommended meds only work for a limited time then wear off to create an increased pain, so a Neurologist suggested a blood thinning medication that at least reduced the pounding pressure. I have now taken that small dose of this every day for the last 30 years, with a fair amount of success as it reduces frequency. I still get headaches, neck pain, numbness, aura, extreme light & sound sensitivity, ringing in my ears, etc everyday but as other here have said - I have just had to get used to it and get on with living with the pain. Other people who do not suffer as we do, will never understand!! I will also take combinations of asprin and paracetemol (as stronger pain killers always make the migraines much worse after the initial dose wears off). My best suggestion is coffee! Coffee works the same way as the neurologist's suggested medication, whenever I need a little more blood pressure reduction in my temples. I have low blood pressure and no heart problems. My father also suffered sever bouts or Migraine headaches, sometimes caused by acids in tomatoes, orange peels in juice, and chocolate. I have inherited his same genetic disposition, although I don't like chocolate very much, I never drink fruit juices, hate dried fruits and peels added to any kind of cooking, but I do like tomatoes. I don't think my triggers are the same as my Dad's? The only time I ever remember not suffering from any kind of headaches or migraines was for 9 months while I was pregnant and for the first 2 months after child birth. For this whole time I did not take any medications or coffee, just smelt lavender, rosemary, menthol and peppermint whenever I felt weakness or slightly off. I know this time with lack of pain was purely due to the pregnancy hormonal stability, because after the baby was born and I was trying to feed her naturally my hormones stated changing back and so the headaches returned. After 3 months I could no longer live with out the daily medication again, so returned to it. Hormonal fluctuation is definitely a major trigger, plus lots of other mysterious things! The best news I can try to pass on to any other sufferers is that while we are waiting for real solid medical cures, the migraines tend to occur less often as we get older (as with my Dad's experience too). Hopefully this Dr Rashmi Halker Singh's - Headache research program will extend to us all across the globe so we can combine ALL our experiences, triggers and symptoms to actually solve this puzzle to find much quicker solutions for relief and a cure!!! Count me in if you are looking for more patients to contribute to this study!?

I used to have migraines growing up as a kid until at some point they just went full on attack mode. For the last 15 years or so the pain is unbearable. I've been reading comments here saying "for people who don't know how it feels, it's like a bad hangover" and so on. From my experience, I would trade any bad hangover for the migraines attack I get. It starts as fatigue but it evolves pretty fast in like an hour or two to a massive headache on the front, top, right side of my skull. The pain is severe at this point but it only gets worse. The pain starts getting sharper, feels like millions shards of glass are broken inside my head and as if a massive hammer hits me right on that same spot. During such attacks I've thrown up on several occasions. Twice or thrice I've fell unconscious. I've smashed my head against walls, car windows while heading to a hospital, anything really to see if I can feel pain over the migraine. There is no magic pill that works on those attacks for me at least, only morphine and sedative injections at the hospital. I've done my share of CT scans, EEGs, MRIs etc only not to find anything that can help. Around 2010 I started having epileptic seizures. Really long ones. When I had my first one, I was at the hospital having a status epilepticus seizure for almost 2 straight hours. Seizures do not stop unless I am given a midazolam solution. Needless to say I've suffered (thankfully) minor brain damage in those long 9 years. Again, after tests like fMRI, EEGs, 48h EEGs etc there is no epilepsy diagnosed but only seizures from unknown cause. The doctor I've been seeing since 2010 has reached at the same conclusion as this video. There is some brain dysfunctioning going on for sure, there is a certain part of my brain that goes nuts during the seizures and it is indeed in the right, top, front side of my brain. He said there is nothing to be done in my country, only option is to go to UK or USA for extensive tests to figure out what causes the seizures, which we partially know is sound related. TLDR; faulty brain is faulty brain.

Migraine is triggered by muscle contractions, mucle construction s is triggered by some foods and mainly bright lights like led even smartphone finger print sensor bright light can be trigger some people have hyper sensitivity for light they more prone to migraine triggers frequently migraine headache is process to increase blood supply which is reduced by muscle and vascular contraction it process to save brain damage as per my experience avoid direct sun rays in eyes avoid any bright light try using umber uv glasses when you feel pre triggering symptoms for next at least 24 hours

Got migraines since I was a teen and am 37 years old now. Doctors (in my opinion) are intentionally lying to us. I'm not an expert or a qualified medical person. But this is my thoughts on the issue after years of having migraines. First and foremost the main culprit is sugar. Doctors always warn us about salt but not so much sugar. As our bodies actually needs salt and we must get proper salt in our bodies. It's essential. Sugar on the other hand is not. I find that when I completely cut out sugar and all carbs out of my diet for 2 weeks. All my symptoms vanished. Especially the inflammation in my body. My bones and joints felt like they were twisting. Deforming. It was very severe. I went to the doctor and as usual, he didn't know what was causing it. I, not a doctor, I figured it out. How is that possible when he studied for years and got paid almost R1000 for his consultation and I had to pay for xrays and pills. So it cost me a good penny to be told that he has no clue what it is and all he can offer me is monthly injections. 2 weeks of no carbs did the trick. Just red meat, greens, salt (lots of it) and water. That's how I found salt to be essential because without it I actually got headaches. When I had more salt it went away. I have hypertension, so salt is a no, no yet it helped. I was never tired and felt physically stronger and more alert. My whole life I've been chronically tired. Like dead tired. No hypertension. I was the calmest I've ever been in my whole life. Sorry for the long story. So that is number 1. Sugar, carbs causes inflammation. Migraines in my unqualified opinion. Is inflammation on the brain. Try taking a deep breath when you have a migraine and see if you feel a little less pressure when you do so. That is because your brain needs oxygen. Why is there a lack of oxygen? Because your blood isn't carrying enough to your brain. How so? Because the heart isn't pumping blood properly. Why not? Because the muscle cannot stretch and expand fully to take in and send out blood properly to your lungs and body. Why not? Because your muscles is being killed off. Your cells are dying. Sugar causes calcification. Rigor mortis basically but while alive. In my arteries as a hypertensive and in my muscles. My back muscles collapsed alot and my heart muscles, well, It's literally dying from the sugar. If your heart isn't working 100 % your blood can't get enough oxygen to your brain and muscles. Without oxygen your brain and muscles start dying. They are trying to survive. Hold your breath and feel how your whole being starts reacting to not getting oxygen. Notice your chest and head. Well, in my opinion only and of what I've observed and figured out with my own experience so far. Migraines are caused by lack of oxygen. What I feel helps so far. Drink plenty of clean water. No chlorine. Chlorine builds up. In our arteries as well. Causes calcification too. Try to get a filter. Cheap ones work fine too. Bathroom and kitchen. Cut out as much refined sugar and carbs. Opt for a little honey if you need some sweetness now and then. Eat more meat and veg. Not too much fruit and no root vegetables. It's not easy but when you feel bad cut back alot on these things. And finally, I'm trying an additional solution that seems to be helping so far. CAYENNE PEPPER. It's the only natural thing so far that beside adcodol pills actually took my migraine away. It took longer but it works. A really high dose. Hope this all helps. All the best.

After visiting doctors they just gave me medicines saying that it is genetics no cure for this! After research in this disease by a doctor named allen mandell (he is in youtube) he found out that migraines were caused by forward head posture along with a weak spinal cord. After months of training for correcting my posture migraine got reduced day by day and my visual snow was enormously reduced after the elimination of migraines. all of you migraine sufferers especially aura have visual snow just search it up. I think my first migraine was at 10 or 11, my last was at 14. Something about the onset of puberty? I don't know. They always followed the same pattern: pain increasing over time until all I could do was lay in the dark, listening to the constant tone in my ears and wondering if the next heartbeat would be the one that would make my head explode. Eventually, finally, the pain would make me vomit, and would then subside enough to allow the fatigue of dealing with it for hours to put me to sleep. When I woke up, it would be over. Having had them, I know how lucky I am they stopped. I've had headaches, terrible hangovers, and head injuries, but nothing comes close.

When I first started getting migraines I was about twelve or thirteen. It was either the smell of gasoline that sparked it or it just enhanced how bad it was somehow. Aura, sensitivity to light, horrible pain just turning my head. When it'd hit peak my hand would tense up and hurt like hell. My index and thumb would feel like it was being crushed together in a vice. After the migraines started, insomnia and constant vivid lucid dreams pretty much every time I sleep began and continues to this day. Was prescribed meds for migraines that were insanely expensive, like $100 for six pills I think it was, so nope to that. Whenever I feel the initial pain coming on (area around my eye twitching a lot seems to be my main sign otherwise) I take some tylenol /acetaminophen/store bought migraine meds, down a cup of coffee or something with a lot of caffeine, and immediately try to force myself into a nap for at least 20min overall factoring in constantly waking up. If I can get around 20 minutes within an hour or so, the main pain is gone and I'm left with the hangover fog pain and exhaustion. My lucid dreams are always a bit more vivid during those naps. And I crave sweet things whenever I sleep and wake up, regardless of migraines and I'm not a candy person. Anything really sweet (really sweet to me anyway) makes the roof of my mouth tingle uncomfortably. Sometimes I'm dead exhausted for days just conking out while doing everything. Just had a run of that within the last few days. Playing a game/watching a video/reading an article, and it's like time instantly disappears and I'm throwing my head up in a panic before I fall forward or slam my head on a desk. I play elite dangerous and I'm out in the middle of nowhere atm a few thousand light-years from the civ bubble. The amount of times I've narrowly avoided plowing into stellar bodies, it would suck so bad if that's what takes me out after all this time xD Always wondered if my migraines played a part with my always having lucid dreams since they both started around the same time. Maybe they could look into that and see if people who suffer from migraines have a higher chance of lucid dreams being common for them. Maybe a connection? *shrug* Much love. Have a good one, people who read all this =) *long time later editting* Apologies for the jumbled grammar. It was difficult to think straight at the time.

My migraines started at a similar age, but I think I was around 10 years old and thought it was triggered by dust. I get the aura, which starts as a little speck in my vision (like I'd looked at the sun) the speck then gets larger and larger until it fills my vision almost entirely, leaving only tunnel vision. Then the aura vanishes and the pain kicks in. I dont get tingles, but I am sensitive to light and sometimes get nausea, occasionally a very angry feeling which makes me not good to be around. I have to do the same as you mention, taking ibuprofen as soon as I notice the aura appear. I wonder if my migraines were linked to hormones, as the majority of my attacks were in my mid to late teens through to my mid twenties. I'm 45 now and my attacks are far less common than they used to be.

@@lawngnome777 meh, don't most energy drinks and they don't do much for me. Insomnia is consistent and most of the time I'm have to be ready to go if needed. Occasional naps are the main reason I get any type of "rest" heh. I don't get any proper rest since it's like closing my eyes to be elsewhere for a while in how my lucid dreams are. They have their own level of exhaustion to throw in. Just got up from a nap actually xD Mental status and current situation keeping a proper sleep schedule is damn near impossible. Rarely drink and I get really bad headaches from any downer type drugs. I have to take headache meds with them. Most herbal teas bring about really bad headaches too. So I drink mainly regular black tea only.. unless I'm willing to suffer for a double chai spice or earl grey. Herbal masochism? And to be clear, I do use a lot of caffeine to stay coherent for the most part. I've tried cutting it out completely for a few weeks to test if caffeine levels were a factor. No difference. It wasn't the case for the headaches, migraines, or insomnia. Which isnt surprising since caffeine has always mellowed me and helped me be more coherent than energetic. A lot of coffee is more likely to knock me out at this point ha. Best I can do is just keep busy and nap when I can. I'm learning Japanese and Spanish to kill time. こんにちは (kon'nichiwa) a todos xD

@@demonsorrows cannabis does nothing to relieve the symptoms, in fact I always found cannabis to be useless for pain (if anything it can often make the mind dwell on pain) I used to smoke a lot in my early twenties, so I have plenty of experience on that front. Plus you have to deal with the lengthy half life of over a day (or up to 2 weeks if you smoke regularly) of feeling dopey, slow and forgetful. Cannabis is far from a wonder/miracle drug. If you want to go that route you should just try CBD oil, for the good effects minus the personality change.

Since we’re here , has anyone else noticed performance (any kind) improvement during a migrane attack? It seems a bit weird when you have a really bad migrane , you know , every movement hurts , light hurts , sounds hurt , and all of a sudden you perform a task better than when you’re free of pain. A few days ago I noticed that I played ping pong a with a bit better accuracy than the previous day that I had played without a migrane. I have noticed this also with other tasks too. It is not a drastic change , but an interesting thing , when my performance will improve a bit when having a crippling migrane (of course this will last until the moment i get so sick I want to vomit).

Unfortunately, frequent or not, there is no medication I've ever encountered that helped. I did, however, find relief in meditation. I don't know if I was training myself to ignore the pain, or actually calming whatever was fucked up in there, but I got them less frequently and at lower intensities. It's been nearly 15 years since I've had a proper migraine, but I do occasionally have "visual migraines." Those are scary, but I'm thankful to not have real migraines anymore.
