I Worked with Eustace for a year in Norfolk Va. back in 1977-78 Stocking groceries at night in a local Giant open air market. He was living with his Grandmother helping her out until she passed away. After she passed Eustice moved to North Carolina with his saved money to buy land of his own which was his dream.

I knew Eustace as a child. We lived in the same neighborhood, just around the corner from each other. Went to the same schools. I remember him as different, a bit iconoclastic, but always a nice guy. He was heavily interested in Indigenous American culture and skills...and sustainable living, even then. Most of the other kids, I think, considered him a bit weird - but probably because they didn't understand him. He always did his own thing - and I admired him for it, even then.

Man, I'm 60 years old, and still work outside nearly every day... My father taught me that a man should try to learn everything he can, every opportunity that came his way. If someone takes the time to teach you something, have enough respect for them to learn it! I would love to spend the est of my days on Turtle Island, learning from him.. (I'm a retired welder btw).

Read a book about Eustace probably 20 years ago, think it was called "Last American Man" maybe, dunno, got it somewhere, fantastic story, couldn't put it down and read it in a day. Amazing man and his love and connection to the horse was incredible, road coast to coast on a horse and in the book he loses his #1 horse I believe clearing land at his now Turtle Island, it was gut wretching to hear his despair, great book, a highly recommended read.

Eustace lives around 20 miles east of me. Most people don't know that he has a college degree, has hiked the AT,parts of Australia and Europe. He doesn't ride horses to Boone, he drives a new red Ford F250 and Turtle Island is most definitely not the most dangerous mountain in the Blue Ridge. That distinction goes to Grandfather Mountain. Not only is Grandfather the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Chain, it's also the most dangerous. The view from the highest peak is worth the danger though. I'm not physically able to make the hike anymore, but I'll never forget the majestic view from the top. While Eustace is a good guy, don't believe anything you see on "reality" TV shows. The only genuine reality show that was non scripted, one man with 3-5 cameras and no crew was Survivorman. Les Stroud started it all and the networks just stole his ideas and started making fully scripted and crewed garbage. Bear Grylls is the worst of the bunch. If you want to learn the fastest way to die in a survival situation, watch Bear. In reality he couldn't survive in a empty Walmart parking lot. Everything he does is scripted and staged, just like all of the rest of the so called "reality" shows. Face it, there's nothing real on TV or social media. That's why I don't watch TV and only use social media to watch anime and play games. I also follow a few KZbin channels that do gun and ammo reviews and the power of nature videos.

I don't know if this is the same Eustace but back in the summer of 1972, i worked at a camp in the North Carolina mounrains and we had a 10yo by the same name and looks remarkably like the person on Mountain Men (years later). He was a great kid and enthusiastic about everything we did including hiking, backpacking, wood crafts. If this is the same person, I'm not at all surprised. In a interview, admits Eustace Conway that he is not as big a savage as he would like to appear. " I am aware that a large part of it is acting. I know I'm a "showman". I know that I show people a picture of how I want to live. But what can I do? I do it so that people can benefit from it, he says and explains that he wants to inspire as many people as possible" The same reportage also reveals that they profit well from being involved in the series.

I live in and around the community where Eustis lives. He has many rental homes, and despite his nature, loving nature personality on TV he is a private investor for many developments that are actually tearing up land and building apartments for college kids in Boone and developments in and around the Blue Ridge Mountains to tear down the forest and build neighborhoods. His tools are not handed down nor made on his property. They are purchased at an antique mall on Highway 321 in between Boone and blowing rock. He may have been a survivalist at one point but now he’s just a rich old man that plays the part.

What investments are you referring to? I’m not familiar with him investing in developments around Boone. I’ve worked with him for the past 3 years on the rental houses you’re talking about. Every one of them was falling apart when he got it, and we went in and brought it back to life with his ingenuity. I could show you every nook and cranny on each of these homes, and they all bear a unique signature of the same Eustace that founded Turtle Island. @@lukecurnutte2000 not on a tree base, 1st cut Apparently you haven't have much experience. either. with a tree trunk, you get right up on it. bottom of blade doing the cutting, i could see an upswing in branches for convenience, but it is still a photo op..

@@lukecurnutte2000 did you watch the 2 linked videos? in each case. BOTH were bottom blade to trunk, BOTH. it is NOT advised to use the top of the blade in the "safety" aspect. for the blade will "hop" potentially causing injury. Granted.. It can be used in that way. but it is careless and not safe. And i also have used the top of the blade in small branch clearing. But He was felling a tree. and the most efficient way, is BLADE IN not on

Sad that the local community Politicians were out to crush this man's lifestyle and way of life. This is a clear example that there is no such thing as freedom in the USA. You should be able to do as you wish on your own Land and share your Land with others as you choose. But that is the furthest from the truth. You would think that the community would embrace his lifestyle as it did bring in others from all around the Country and the local township would benefit from money that wouldn't have come to the local economy. But the Politicians want to persecute those last few true Humans

Do you have proof of this ? It just galls me that anytime 2 people of same sex show genuine affection for each other, the gossip starts. But I never saw anything to point to a relationship, other than longtime devoted friends. Preston was married & devoted to Kathleen since 1975. After him caring for & nursing her back to health from cancer, she and other family nursed him during the 3 weeks he lived after his diagnosis.

This has to be a joke. Making a fire, cutting some brush, sawing a log, truck engine blowing up haha, these are everyday occurrences for a good part of the rural population. These shows are meant for city folk. The best is when he shoots a deer for meat. There are over 4000 000 deer a year harvested in Wisconsin every fall haha. Silly.
