He was hooked in the first 5 minutes, played it all the way through in a single sitting and even cried when the baby drowned. While playing this game, I really got attached to edith. I know I shouldn't have as the game itself was essentially telling me that I shouldn't get attached but after hearing each story in my mind I thought the developers would have edith survive, but as I drew closer to the end, in the back of my mind I had a sense of dread. Sadness and some anger. Many games don't do this to me, those rare few being telltales walking dead ep5 and the final season of the walking dead game. I hadn't been emotionally attached to a character for a long time after clem's story ended. But after hearing all the loss edith had in her life and even though in the back of my mind I knew she'd die I thought she we would meet her child. But unfortunately she didn't, and that hurt me just the shock and realisation what remains of edith finch is her child and journal. Emotionally drained me and the fact I'm a similar age to her now playing it for myself (rather than watching a video) made me sad and the fact nothing is mentioned about how her child is doing (home life etc) made me sad too but I think they left it off with her child to leave it ambiguous and let the players think how he is doing. I'm glad I found a video that I can put my thoughts on

spoilers!................ I love this game and its detail. After passing it I did come to some conclusions and maybe yours are similar. 1. I think the family is cursed with a sort of "final destination" thing. Some of the family were hurt/injured .. like Calvin had a broken leg before his death. In one flashback i think walter had a major injury happen to his hand/arm and Edith's son at the beginning when hes on the boat, has a cast on his left arm. I these things indicate death coming for them but not succeeding at that point. Meaning her son is already being targeted by the curse. 2. what remains of edith is her book but also her son. 3. I think the little girl who was hungry and said that she would be "delicious"... was locked in her room so she could starve to death because the mom wanted to kill her before the curse did. The snake may have been her hunger. Or maybe it was a real snake put in there by her mom? .... anyway... i got alot more stuff from the game but those are just a few of my takes from it.
@antead46494 жыл бұрын
You said that Molly died by a snake or hunger but I don't think that's it. If you remember she ate the poisonous plant and I think she died from that. She dreamed about being an owl, shark, cat and a monster, and that's because she had books and things in her room about those animals.

I think it pretty obvious that all members of the family have strong inborn magical powers, which they mostly are in denial about. Plus they are more or less addicted to fear, and their subconscious mind uses these fears combined with their magical powers in order to kill them. To engage in fear is to ask the universe for loss, suffering and death, fear is negative desire for escape from perceived threats, and in order that we may fulfill the desire for escaping, the threats must first manifest for us in our physical lives, and this manifestation is what our fearful desires bring about. For real! Desires and thoughts are objectively real and have power over our physical reality (and thoughts have power over our desires and the desires of others). This is true of the positive ones as well as of the negative ones, on a lighter note. In our mundane reality, outside all games and fictions. To deny this doesn't help, reality is what it is and works the eay it does regardless of our beliefs, although those beliefs are thoughts that shape our reality, even our external physical circumstances. I think one message of the game is the severe harm and utter futility of engaging in fear too much. In which case it does a pretty good job.
@jacobcash89424 жыл бұрын
@@henrikljungstrand2036 I just played it and I had a completely different interpretation. There is a curse...but the curse is "Creativity"; or more specifically the genetics of creative ambition. Remember that the entire family had some sort of creative expression throughout their personal lives: Wood Carving, Comic Artist, Photography, Painter, Actor, Video Game Designer etc. And yet the harsh reality of being lost in creativity can make one aloof to certain safety measures as evidenced by several family members wearing a cask. Furthermore, it makes further sense that the curse is not "death" as one would think; but rather the inconsolable difference of one's dreams with reality at ANY STAGE of life: The baby member shows signs of wild imagination, which led to his death, as well as the old hermit who built toy trains in seclusion. Creativity is both a Blessing and a Curse, as evident by the family's penchant for dangerous risks; it can create immensely rewarding results: (e.g: Barbara's Acting Fame and Lewis' Productivity in the workplace) or complete tragedy (Molly's creativity made her think she was a monster/animal eating everything which includes poison/toothpaste chemicals/dirty hamster food) If you remember how the house is structured...the house is basically the family tree that Christopher (Player Character) reads in his mother's journal, proving that the boy has the "curse" of imagination, so most likely we as the audience is seeing how the house looks through Chris's imagination of his mother learning about the "family tree". He is the last "Remains"of Edith Finch and her family and must live with the knowledge that he has this "gift".

Lewis’s story was so devastating and deep. Gregory also hit home just because he is a baby. Walters hurts because it was so sudden. Edith’s death was confusing, I had a lot of questions at the end. I think Molly had pics and her story was hallucinations due to her injecting poison.
@aditification14 жыл бұрын
The way I interpreted the game was that I the player is in fact the curse on the finches. If you think about it the player of the game is who eventually kills everyone including edith. The player becomes the snake who eats Molly. And then the frog that kills Gregory and the monster that cheers for barbara to scream. So in some weird way the outcome that results in death of the finches is the outcome you the player is striving for. It's a paradox because you the player wants to know what happened to the finches but you the player also drive all them to their death. Atleast that is how I saw it.

There's something so very creepy about that music box that Sven made "for Barbara." It really has nothing to do with Barbara as a person, it just immortalizes a scene from this movie she was in as a toddler, something she took part in before she could remember or make decisions for herself. Imagine having that define you, an identity your parents put on you before you even had a say. Imagine your dad giving you a "gift" that reinforces that pretend identity, that tells you who you really are is an itty bitty little helpless waif alone in the woods with the shadow of a monster encroaching behind you. It's interesting how throughout most of her story in the game, Barbara doesn't play along. She doesn't seem really invested in perfecting her scream, in proving how good of a damsel in distress she can be for the entertainment of others. She whacks her bf upside the head with his own crutch when he tries to freak her out, and later takes out the hookman pounding on Walter's door. Knocks him clean over the upstairs railing, what a bamf. Yet despite the fact that she fought back hard, in the end she was murdered anyway. The comic paints it as some final moment of triumph, like she was happy to die in such a sensational way and be remembered for it, but she must have been ACTUALLY scared in the end, when she finally screamed like that. She died in terror, and her mom just revels in the spectacle of it and the attention it brings the family, setting up a shrine with this tacky comic glorifying her daughter's death. Sick.

There is no curse. Shit just happens, and a century is plenty of time for shit to happen. The curse was a coping mechanism the fam created to try and make sense of their shit luck, and Edith implies that once that narrative was created, the later generations of the family might have subconsciously and accidently made it "real". Edith came home looking for a way to make sense of her family's history, and she came away with the conclusion that there was no sense to be found. Solving the mystery would have been counter productive to thematic point of the game, that there actually was never a mystery to solve.

SPOILER ALERT trying to prevent loneliness and being scared of that loneliness is another thing that i got out of the game. this is because for one, (1) everyone lives in the same house. with traditional families, people don’t do this. sure it may be a couple people, but many as this family had. (2) at the ending when Edith Finch dies, it talks about how she is finally alone and about how she is the last one left, despite her mother’s best efforts. these two things in my opinion put a particular emphasis on that loneliness.

If you haven't played the game or watched a lets play I highly recommend you do so before watching this video. I just beat it and it's an amazing game and I'm so glad I got it on the Switch sale. Such an impactful story and really shows how the video game format compliments the story and just works so well together. I think this kind of walking sim/story/movie format of game will become increasingly popular in the future as it already has been with games like Firewatch (which I loved). What Remains of Edith Finch and Firewatch are my favorite games in this style that have both evoked deep emotional reactions and made me laugh and also gave me a feeling of mystery with nostalgia. They opened my mind to wonder what would happen next and what it was all about in the end. The stories are so well told and both games have beautiful environment. In Edith Finch each room and the house itself is like a character. If you spend some time in each room it gives you an idea, combined with the game portion of their individual stories, that really gives you a sense of who that character is and what they were like. The house really feels like it was lived in and also abandoned and frozen in time. It just works so well. I think my favorite story was in the underground fallout shelter without getting into details. I also liked the Cat, Hawk, Snake, story and so many of them. There was some dark humor as well as some more serious stories and the narration as well as the way the text is delivered leading you on like a good book is like a fantastic "page-turner" of a book. Actually turning pages of old journals, letters, and notes adds to this book like feeling on top of the narration and text on screen. Each character's story felt so unique in terms of the gameplay and how they met their demise. Recently a game called Spiritfarer launched for the Nintendo Switch that is described as "a cozy game about dying" or something along those lines. While Spiritfarer is a title all of it's own with much different gameplay, graphics, etc. that description seems to fit squarely with Edith Finch. There is a small dark undertone to the story though it seems more like fond memories and a sort of celebration of what made each character who they were even though you watched their demise. Watching and playing this was cathartic in a sense and made me think of what it must be like to be alive watching one's own funeral and reflecting back and the game emphasizes this sort of flashback throughout the paths of the game and through Edith's room as well as the credits. It all works together so well and this is one of my favorite games I've played in 2020. Definitely recommend picking this up if you are a fan of story games or are looking for a new experience. I would love to play this again in VR.

Aric Hudson what’s the difference between “What remains of Edith Finch?” and “What remains of Edith Finch.”?
@devil-dawg055 жыл бұрын
In your first sentence you’re asking a question about asking what remains of Edith Finch while in your second sentence you’re making a statement about what remains Edith Finch as like saying this is what’s left of Edith Finch and her story.

I’m confused about when molly becomes different animals
@PRguayama4 жыл бұрын
molly ate the mistletoe in the bathroom. i think this is was a subtle way the creators implied she died of poison. molly obviously didnt die of hunger because she wouldve died weeks if not months after. when molly was transforming into the different animals she states multiple times how hungry she was and how she always wanted something bigger to eat. so my guess is she either fell asleep and was dreaming, woke up before her death paranoid of a 'monster under her bed' and wrote about her dream/ paranoia, or she saw the bird outside the window and actually tried grabbing it and hallucinated the rest and had some type of high from the mistletoe, had a bad reaction and that would explain the paranoia of the monster under her bed. its also very clear that not all of the stories are 100% accurate nor are some of them true. this game can easily be compared to dark humor, making light of tragic situations to make it not as sad or heartbreaking. mollys story is a perfect example of this. so to answer your question, from what i can tell molly died of poison and and hallucinations and paranoia along the face of her death.

Thanks for the video, I wanted a nice recap to figure out if it's really worth my time finishing it, but this was enough for me. I just couldn't get into it. No sprint button yet everything is slooooooow, and the autosave system is terrible. I lost a ton of progress because I had to take a break, it never saved even though I had progressed quite far, so I just gave up.
