The beach area for Rome is called Ostia, just a short train ride from Rome. A real bonus to see there is Ostia Antica, the ancient port. It’s ruins are 2nd only to Pompeii with mosaics, whole buildings still intact!! And no crowds!

I was in Civitavecchia almost exactly one year ago(at the time your recording) to board a ship for a transatlantic repositioning cruise back home to the U.S. After the hustle, bustle, and crowds of Rome (I'm very glad late October/early November is considered off peak season in Rome and the Mediterranean. It's the only time I would visit, it's absolutely fantastic). I also liked the more laid back vibe of the city. Thanks for bringing back some nice memories, Steve and Alicja.

That looks lovely and so quiet. I traveled on Interrail from Finland to Italy via Germany and Austria many years ago. I could not speak a lot of Italian but by the time I arrived in Rome, I was pretty fluent in hand gestures as well as shouting. 😂

Thanks Steve and Alicja, another place that don't have to visit but feel like I ve been there. Steve travels alone around the world, often a bit lost, like in Iceland looking for the bus stop, but he manages fine alone. In this video there are several moments when he is SO glad that Alicja is there to sort him out. What a lovely couple.

Was nice to wake up today to this video. Minus 1 C here so really enjoyed looking at palm trees and sunshine. Lovely little port town, once away from the tourist traps. When in Rome a few years back we hopped on a train and ended up in Anzio, also on the Med and it was a lovely escape for a day, away from the craziness but loveliness of Rome. Looking forward to Saturday’s episode.

Great video. A fascinating easy day trip from Civitavechia is to Tarquinia. You can see the Etruscan (pre Roman civilization ) tombs
@duncanbrough1455Күн бұрын
We stayed in an Airbnb above the entrance to the railway station in Civitavecchia a few years back, very handy for the train into Rome the next day. Remember you need to always have your Italian train tickets validated or you risk a fine if your tickets do get checked on the train. The wee machines are usually just inside the gates onto the platforms. Been several times to the city whilst cruising the Med (our last time was just in September so you weren't too far behind us) but never seen it in all its splendour so thanks for another great video!

If you find yourself with another day in Civitavecchia, take the public bus north up the coast to the Etruscan town of Tarquinia. It's a marvelous little nugget of a town with its own necropolis and museum.

One thing I noticed in the second watch of the video: the crossing in Civitavecchia, where you were a little bit scared that the cars came so quickly near to the crossing. In Italy and in France you have to WALK straight. Don't hesitate, don't look inside the coming cars and try to connect. The drivers have a look at you and drive over the crossing in front of you or behind you. They don't stop if not neccessary. If you hesitate or reduce or increase your speed, you become unpredictable for the drivers and this is dangerous. Be brave, walk. :D
