I am not a musician but love music. I have recently read something about the blue note and have only been able to find what seems to be very technical guitar tutorials which although very good are almost like I've walked into a rocket science class in a university for geniuses. Can someone point the way to a well known tune that uses blue notes. Are blue notes a kind of feeling you get from a piece of music? Are blue notes to do with the Blues? I have a set of cd's from the Blue Note record label.

In non-technical terms, a blue note is basically a note that was slightly changed from what you would "usually" play, to give it a slightly "bluesy" feeling.

Thanks for the video. Blue notes were sung first before they were ever played on an instrument by African slaves in America. It would later carry on to music in black churches and spawned what we know as gospel.

Blue notes was not first sung by African slaves. Blue notes have been sung by humans since (if not before) humans existed. Thousands and thousands of years before the west African Atlantic slave trade. But they wasnt first described and explained until the 18th century in Europe. And Russian composers was writing about this long before anyone else. It wasnt like people was unaware of the idea before then, of course it has been known for ever. It just took awhile for western music to use it as a tool rather than something to avoid. Also blue notes certainly did not "spawn gospel". I have no idea why you would think that. Sure blue notes have been used in gospel. But they're also used a BUNCH in traditional Oriental music - but no one would claim it's what spawned all Asian music... Many Asian instruments are designed to take advantage of intervals which western music often intentionally excludes. Blue notes is a huge part of that Asian traditional/folk music sound - we are basically talking about notes which are a smaller interval than the semi tones used in western music. Modern Western music uses a 12 tone equal temperament to describe it's sound. A blue note is just a note between two semitones. Like between a C# and D. That's the simplest way to describe it. But sometimes people confuse blue notes with "the devil's tone" which is a tritone. Many churches in early Europe banned those intervals and it is famously used a great deal in blues music. It's what gives blues music that unique sound. That interval alone can completely change the feeling of whatever you're playing SO much. But that is very different than a blue note. It can be mistaken easily because it's sometimes called "the blues notes" - opposed to a blue note. I've heard people call it that because like I said it's used so much in blues music. That interval had been banned by churches. Its 6 half steps from your root. Augmented 4th or just a sharp 4th note. So if you're playing blues in the key of C minor, you throw in a F# and you will get a bluesy feel.

Interesting ST, I'd like to know how long just intonation and blue notes were used in Africa pre-contact.

@@mellejobs7412 I certainly can't retort the reply offered by Bilb Ono, as being incorrect. However what i can offer is a simple link whose accuracy I cannot state as factual en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origins_of_the_blues Contained within the link is the discussion of the origins of the blue note. What I can offer is limited and based on my one semester of music appreciation class from my professor music.osu.edu/people/mcdaniel.2 The use of the blue note is not found in any other form of popular music to the extent and in the manner it has been in the Black gospel, jazz and R&B genres. My understanding is that the connection to slavery and the blue note is a direct result of the unimaginable hard life slaves endured and their suffering created a wail-like sound that carried over into music and referred to as a blue note.
