📚 Description: Fender has always been rather forward-thinking and constantly adopts up-and-coming and current-day artists. Recently, they just welcomed 3 additional Female members to the line up - Tash Sultana, H.E.R. and Billie Eilish. Out of the 3, I decided to get the HER strat since I thought it featured the most unique finish and spec options.
I didn't really like this guitar. The finish was cool, but the pickups aren't really for me, but are great for R&B + mellow grooves. I'm sure after a good set up this would be a nice playing guitar though!

Dark/mellow tones could be due to the 250K pots as my American Deluxe Strat w/Noiseless Pickups came with 1M Ohm Pots. I've noticed that entail pick guards can act as a soundboard causing the 5-Way Switch to sound louder when changing pickup selection.

Fender's own video on how to adjust vintage heel-based truss rod shows them loosening the bolts but not removing them, and then "breaking" the neck at the join, which tilts the screw up just enough to be accessible. So it's not as bad as having to take the strings off or remove the neck entirely. I have a Robert Cray strat which has the vintage neck -- haven't needed to adjust yet, but I'm less intimidated after watching the video.

Thank you for sharing that info! It still could be much, much easier, though! 🙂 And Robert Cray! I heard his name mentioned only the other day, when John Farnham (hit song 'Yoo Da Voice') was recommending him in a video from '87, and I hadn't heard his name in a very long time before that! Always loved his song 'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark' 🙂

The first thing I would do is take my Dremel Tool and cut access for that truss rod adjustment. I don't care how it affects the price or look. That's the most important item on a guitar. My Suhr has the truss rod in same place, but they carved out a nice trench to be able to stick a screwdriver into while it's still on the body.

@nascargas
@nascargas 3 жыл бұрын
Yeeep Howdy! That is a stunner! Have to admit the tones are way unique for a Strat. Your demo indeed makes it sound perfect for HER music. I have to say I really like the Non Strat sound that is still uniquely Strat-ish...ringing on a different spectrum. Your distortion tone seemed miles apart from Gabriella's tone on the Kimmel guitar battle. It seemed lush and perfectly rock ready for what she was laying down. She nearly matched Brian Mays tone for her Queen solo. So it occurs to me that she also relies on some other configurations after the guitar for further sound molding. That just opens up this unit for a lot more tones than it comes with out of the box obviously that being pigeon holed into her particular genre. Having any of that at her command makes this guitar at its price point a super value to me. That finish combined with those awesome abalone inlay? Holy Moly! The small issues you found to me are negligible if as you say they don't interfere with playability. Great review! Knew nothing about HER and wasnt aware this was out there. A kinda cool to see you bounce away from Gibson for a brief moment... Love your show!

That’s a great-looking Strat! I have to disagree with you about the sound, though-based on this demo, I think it sounds really good. I like the Vintage Noiseless pickups-I’ve got a set of them in my ‘98 American Deluxe Telecaster. You’re right-they’re not as bright as regular Strat or Tele pickups, but that’s what treble controls and bright switches are for, right? I bet this thing would sound killer through a Twin Reverb! H.E.R. is a really good guitar player-good singer too. It’s great to see a new young R&B artist focusing on the guitar-it seems like guitar has taken a back seat in pop music for a while. I would certainly rock one of H.E.R. Strats. I’d probably put locking tuners and regular strap buttons on it, though.

Annoying but I notice people get one that is setup out of the box, and then they modify it anyway lol. I am interested in the difference between HER sound, which is awesome, and all the guys who hate the pups. Indeed, I own a 50's Musicmaster and MIJ Stratocaster with an anodized pickguard. They tend to have a relatively mellower tone. When I said the tone would change with the pickguard material, someone laughed who had no ears to hear.
@kirkwilson6229
@kirkwilson6229 3 жыл бұрын
The tone shouldn't change with the pickguard material. It isn't close enough to the pups to introduce eddy currents or capacitance, which are the two things that would affect your tone in that situation, scientifically speaking. That is why gold pickup covers lose high end: capacitance. It is something else, likely the pickups that caused the tonal darkness in your other guitars. Either that, or the difference was in your head, which is extremely common, and no musician will admit to it.
@134SASAKI
@134SASAKI 3 жыл бұрын
@@kirkwilson6229 Originally, I'm talking about "lose high end: capacitance" by anodized pickguard, which is no different from your opinion isn't it? That's why I participated in Matthew's shielding topic.

@@kirkwilson6229 In addition, although many fake scientists don't admit, vintage-type pickups are mostly microphonic, then guitar components affect the tone of your electric guitar. But don't get me wrong, I also hate snake oil things. For example I don't think the tone will change with the type of capacitor (except for the difference in capacitance). I'm not just listening to the sounds in my head. I record guitars and basses at work every day and produce music.

I love a lot about the look. I’d steal from this for a custom. Keeping the abalone fret markers, adding abalone pickup covers and aluminum knobs with abalone tips. Same for the selector switch. Every good guitar deserves Grovers imo.

I really liked the song in the fender video, and the solo, and one other snippet of music HER was playing but I haven’t had the chance to hear more. I have a Clapton CS strat and the noiseless pups are nice, I just notice if you make the common mistake of playing it through a tube amp that’s barely on 1 then, no, it doesn’t sound like a strat on your favorite record. But it’s a mistake a lot of people make, through the Princeton reverb turned up anywhere after 2.5-3 they sound great. If I were to add a 3rd strat (I have a american pro from 2018) I would really consider this for a different look. 1100 is just not bad....

Wish they would’ve had a rosewood fret board... hmm... might take this on as a project guitar one day! Throw a black painted tele headstock, HH config pickguard 💪🏽

I think I am going to get one but to basically mod, My thoughts personally, Graphtech Black nut. Black hardware - possibly Gotoh or Hipshot tuners, Gotoh/Wilkinson Bridge, screw kit Black, with Black pickup covers and switch/Knobs, Change the neck plate(just to make sure it doesn't scratch off during play) Electronics - Obsidian Gilmour PCB drop in, Update all the ground wiring to Pushback Get the Fender 57'62' pickups This would be an extremely nice vintage workhorse.

So basically pay 1.3k just for the body and neck?
@nocturnal101ravenous6

@@jmdyt3626 Right now on Stratosphere you can buy a loaded body for $580 Hardware only $390 and the neck $320 for no tuners and with Tuners for $380. Also i bought mine from Fender for $1k before the price increases. Honestly the gig bag isn't worth a damn and the tuners are okayish, the pickups are meh, Honestly all you really want with this guitar is the Neck body and pickguard and backplate everything else is overpriced Meh. its passible for use but not the best for the price when you can get an American made Performer, you have to actually want the paint job and Configuration of the neck TBFH. I buy guitars as tools and tools get modified to what I like and need for their purpose I choose to use them for. Price isn't really relevant and collectors or prospectors expecting to get rich can kiss my ass, its why all the guitarists sound the same these days, afraid to touch something out of stupidity.

I have a strat with the exact same noiseless pickups, but i found them overly bright, and had to tune my amp for a warmer tone to compensate. Could just be your amp tones you chose for it.

Me too. Was more of a Jazz pitchy sound. Was what the Jazz guy who bought them from me said too. Lack depth personality. They all basically sound just this way IMO.

Its a lot like my 60th Anniversary Strat. Made in Mexico- Desert sand with an anodized gold pickguard. Vintage 60s spec - neck had a twist and needed to be replaced. cheap electronics especially the switch.

What amplifier did you use? The recording sounded rather lifeless.

It's not the amp, it's just his playing that is lifeless.

That truss rod style needs the little routed channel between the neck pocket and neck pickup cavity so you don’t have to loosen the neck to make adjustments... the fact that it’s not there is just wrong.

Maybe the noiseless pickups need to set closer to the strings. I've got Kinman's and they sound better that way - small adjustments can make big differences. Thanks

This is one of my 10 overall Strats, making it two MIMs and 8 MIAs. I have no complaints with this Strat plugged into my Blues Deluxe for the past month. It's actually going to be one of my favorites.

I hope you did not lose the tremolo arm spring when you removed the yellow sticker. Many people not familiar with a Stratocaster know there's a spring in there and lose it.

the nut might be cut to low, gives a buzz and as you noted the string hits the base of the head stock, you need a new nut

That's the most beautiful Stratocaster that I've ever seen, and it doesn't cost 2 grands, just a bit over 1k bucks which is unusual for a Fender.

Back when those Vintage Noiseless pickups came out Fender included three 1 Meg pots in the box. I have one of those Blizzard Pearl Strats. Blizzard Pearl is a Toyota color for all you Scotty Kilmer fans.

Your rainbow glow disappeared because those lights were the standard fluorescent lights. Those radiate a much more limited spectrum band, and you lose the visible frequencies that reflect those colors. I had noticed this issue, last year, that when I glittered my guitars, most of the heavy sparkle was evident under a regular incandescent bulb, but the finish was dull and lifeless, under fluorescent lights.
