I just love when Becky replies to the mother "I haven't always been like this" like it's the most natural thing in the world. So much compassion and genuine human kindness.

There’s a scene that makes some people turn on Gilbert, but he should’ve never been given that near total responsibility for his *sibling* . I feel for the mom but the fault is mostly on her. You can really empathize for every character. It’s a great movie.

33:56 - "I haven't always been like this." "Well...I haven't always been like THIS." One of my favorite lines...so simple but really pretty profound. I also like when Becky tells Gilbert to tell her what he wants as fast as he can, and he says nothing for several seconds and she says "faster".

Leo DiCaprio was nominated for his first Oscar for his role in the movie. The actress, Darlene Cates, playing the mother was morbidly obese. In 2012, she lost 240 lbs and wanted to resume her acting career. He passed away in her sleep in 2017 at age 69.

As sometime what grew up in a family with a lot of unspoken trauma and grief and abuse... This movie hit a little too close to home. My mom was also obese and struggled with emotional eating. When others would say mean things it went straight to my heart. As much as our relationship was strained, she was my mother. If it wasn't clear in the movie, their father commit suicide in the basement... So when the mother said "please don't disappear" to Gilbert, it carries a lot of emotional weight.

One of my very favourite movies, I can watch it over and over. Every member of the cast is perfect, every character is flawed and they all have their reasons, just like real life. I still cry, every time. Thank you for your reaction Kemi and thanks to Steve also. ❤

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this film. It's focus on hidden struggles in everyday life is eye opening and is a beautiful reminder that no one is perfect and that you never truly understand where someone else comes from or what they have to experience daily. 💜🖤💜

36:49 I know everyone says that Leo was an really good actor at 18 years old and portraying someone who's mentally challenged (he got some of his first major award nominations because of this movie), and that Johnny's amazing as lead actor, and even how awesome Juliette Lewis was as the lead actress. But for me, the real star was Bonnie, Gilbert's mom, who was played by a first-time ever actress named Darlene Cates. This movie's director and EP discovered her by chance. She was on an episode of the Sally Jesse Raphael Show back in 1992 talking about her life of being homestuck and bedridden at 480 pounds, and told her story in a way that made a lot of people in the audience tear up. She was offered the role of the Mama in this movie (the director wanted a moridly obese woman for this role to match the book it was based off of) and she took it and played it perfectly. The director actually arranged a few flights of a small part of the film crew and the actors and actresses from Romania all the way to Texas near where she lives so they could film her parts of the movie. Some people ask me "Is it really acting though if she's just playing an extension of herself?" But I can tell you that it's one thing to be a mother of three who's felt that she's become a burden to her family, and another to go out there while the cameras roll and be exposed and vulnerable and pulling out this side of you that you'd never show. The scenes of her going to get Arnie and going back home, and of her talking with Gilbert for the last time, and of her walking up the stairs, you can feel how painfully real those are, which is what this movie was really going for. Sadly, Darlene isn't with us now. She passed away in her sleep in 2017 at the age of 69.

There is a lack of empathy with people who turn to emotional eating, like they're greedy and lazy so don't deserve compassion. Gilbert's mother suffered from a mental illness. Some comments say she should have stopped eating, but that's like telling a clinically depressed person to stop feeling depressed - it's not possible without help and therapy. It's very sad in situations like this where the parent isn't able to be a proper parent and the children have to grow up and be the adults, but we also can't put all the responsibility of blame on Gilbert's mother. She suffered trauma after her husband committed suicide and she became unwell. I think Becky in the movie is a great character to aspire to be like - full of compassion and understanding and care. Thank you for reacting to this movie which was a favourite of my teenage years.

I love this movie. I saw it in the theater when it came out and about 100 times since then. Wasn’t a dry eye when the mom died. I hate the dad killed himself in that house and left bad juju on it. They were reminded of it everyday and I think that subconsciously it weighed them all down except Arnie. They all had a lot of life’s weights on them. And what a cast. Outstanding.

@@user-bg7nm4ez3i the problem with what you’re saying is you’re blaming a sibling for leaving and not the parent. Gilbert’s older sibling is not the parent, Gilbert is not the parent, the sisters are not parents. The mother is to blame for the situation. Not that she isn’t without her own issues. But the problem is people are quick to give someone a pass because they have problems. Not realizing how also manipulative and toxic they are. Gilbert’s mother manipulated him, to force him to stay. Because with him there taking care of everything she didn’t have to address anything or change. And I’m speaking as the Gilbert of my family who had an older sibling leave me with all the baggage.

@@mellysomething6296 I hear what you're saying and agree that it is the parents sole responsibility for their children and nobody else but as a sibling if you see your family struggle right in front of you and your main response is to think about yourself then there has to be something wrong. I get that it's not his fault for the circumstances but it's his fault for not making a difference there no matter how big or small.
