it was 1971. I was 23. Civil Rights raging.. As for music, Marvin Gaye was absolutely bringing it with "What's Going On".....Well in fact, he is still bringing it in this extraordinary rendition of his song and message that simply could not be more powerful, important or relevant today. This is just gorgeous!!

I grew up with R&B and especially Marvin Gaye. Growing up in the inner city of DC protesting, marching, police violence...but there was the music of Marvin..and others that helped us to persevere. To watch the video of Marvin singing this song you can see and feel the pain. As a Global Citizen, I thank you Playing For Change (PFC) for including the Global vocalist and musicians and showing their communities. This version is joyous!! I have also ordered my PFC T-shirt and love it. Thanks to all involved and I'm sending much love!!!

I can’t count the number of times I’ve watched and listened to this video and it never fails to move me. The artistry and musicianship is wonderful. As an avid fan of Marvin Gaye I never thought I’d hear another version of this song he recorded that I’d get so much from. Ironically it was inspired by co-writer Renaldo Benson, one of the Four Tops, who witnessed an act of police brutality in the 70’s, a very relevant subject today, proving some things haven’t change much for black people in the USA in over half a century. Despite the seriousness of what led the composer to write it, it will remain one of my all time favourite pieces of music.

Absolutely Beautiful! As good of a cover as I've ever heard and Titi and Clarence's vocals are so in tune with each other that their harmonies are just divine! If I could sing like Clarence, I'd never shut my mouth! There are only a dozen or so male singers I'd say that about these days! Being an old fart, I remember when this song came out in 1971 when I turned 18 and the Viet Nam war was still going on and we were all worried sick about being drafted to fight in a war that was so wrong, in so many ways. To this day I can't hear "What's Going On" without getting teary-eyed at the thought of how many friends I lost because of that war.
@DirectionlessStudent Жыл бұрын
I was 10 when this came out, so I did not really understand it at the time, but I now hear it and recalling everything that was going on during my childhood -- the Vietnam War protests, the construction workers attacking the protesters, the riots in most major cities, the nightly news reports of American servicemen killed, etc., etc. and feel just as you do. Marvin's heartfelt plea for unity and understanding will forever stand the test of time as a lyrical masterpiece. Almost as relevant today as it was then. "You know we've got to find a way to bring some understanding here today."

I stumbled upon this quite by chance, and since I like Sarah, decided to watch the entire video. It’s honestly not my favorite rendition or version of the Marvin Gaye hit, but it still hit home for me. Watching the wide variety of people from all parts of the world, playing various instruments and singing, brought back so many memories and hopes for our world and future generations. I was blessed and extremely fortunate to have been able to travel to every country represented in the video, in addition to many other rather unknown, smaller countries (i.e. Devil’s Island, Reunion Island, towns along the Amazon River, to mention just a few). Seeing in person how the residents live, and what they have to go through in order to get food and survive, etc., is hard to imagine, as are the hardships they’ve faced for years. Listening to the lyrics to this song, while written some time ago, are probably more relevant today than they were back when Marvin G. first played it!
