I recently acquired a '97 c200 Avantgarde which I'm looking forward to lavishing some attention on, and your own efforts are very encouraging. Sadly I don't have a garage so most things will have to wait until the Spring and Summer. Keep up the good work!

The car is looking great Simon. I have a DA polisher myself as they are said to be more forgiving than a rotary although you still need to be very careful around edges and trim. The details make the difference and the replacement stickers are the icing on the cake. Having driven the car I can say it now has looks to match how well it drives. I think I need to save up for a trip to see Gary for some body work improvements on my car.

Looking good Simon! My 19Oe (as featured in Project Nigel) is currently in the garage for a few bits and bobs. I’m hoping it will look as nice as yours soon. The painwork is a bit rough but it’s completely rust-free and a lovely thing!

Many thanks, I think most of these at this age of have had some paint work as they seem to suffer from lacquer peel, but as long as they’re solid in the jacking points round the back window and front wings, you’re probably fine. Good luck on getting yours back on the road soon (Paul was quite taken by it I recall). I wonder if 190s will ever will be appreciated in the same way that BMW E30s are?

@@Lot76CARS the paintwork is just a bit pobbly. As I said it’s completely rust free - spent almost it’s entire life garaged in a posh bit of London - which is why I bought it. It’s in for a wheel bearing, shifter bushes and wiper linkage repair and we’re good to go. I’ll try to get it to some shows this year - so you never know - our Mercs might meet 😊

No, I’m pretty attached but I’ve seen a pre facelift manual 2.6 that caught my eye.. but I know this car so well now could I be so lucky next time?

@@Lot76CARS . Phew !. . Manual pre facelift 2.6 is a rare beast. I couldn't find one when I was looking and had to settle for an auto 2.6. I didn't appreciate until I owned mine that the E & S on the auto box was " slow" or "exra slow" in terms of gear selection !. I don't want to put you off but people don't exactly rave about the manual either but I can't speak personally on the matter. Try before you buy is the answer. Look forward to seeing yours at some point this year. It's probably in the best shape its been in for years.

Thanks for watching Rupert. The colour was the stand out reason I bought it without really knowing all the history. It was the first owners number one choice.. I have the brochure where it’s marked! The colour appears to have been discontinued after 1990 and be replaced by a lighter grey ‘carrara grey’

Yes get rid of that tow bar, they are quite heavy, every little helps for fuel consumption.

Hi Simon, I note you mention filling up with E5. I've been wondering about whether I should be doing this with my '97 C200 (or use a fuel additive with the usual E10). I nipped down to my local Tesco tonight which usually stocks the super unleaded stuff, but all of the pumps had notices over the nozzels stating it was unavailable. Is this going to be a trend I wonder. Would appreciate your thoughts on this.

To be honest I’ve stuck with E5 since hearing about the issues other 190E owners had had with rough running and petrol leaks from fuel lines allegedly damaged by E10. After checking, Esso E5 Synergy Supreme (in most parts of the UK) is free of any ethanol but labelled as E5 for legal reasons.. www.esso.co.uk/en-gb/fuels Also, some evidence to suggest worst mpg on E10 which makes sense because of the lower calorific value. I saw the lack of E5 at Tesco when filling another car so I think it’s Tesco specific. To be honest here Shell and Esso at at the same price as Tesco anyway.

Looks great. I have a smoke silver (gold) 190e as my daily. What kind of issues was the fuel tank filter giving you?

On steep inclines it was kicking down fine but losing power… on the flat no issues. I did some online research and thought it was worth a try, the gunge that came out of the tank I couldn’t show but it was considerable… for £24 the filter had to be worth a bash and seems to have worked!

Why are you using E5 petrol?

Older Mercedes >25 years are (generally) are not suitable for E10. The higher ethanol content can damage fuels lines and (for carburettor equipped cars) some of the fitting in the carb.

@@Lot76CARS OK, thanks for your reply. I was told (without having asked) that E10 was absolutely fine for my 1993 W124 300E, and that using E5 was simply a waste of money. This was from the classic MB specialist dealer who sold me the car, and who (AFAICT) has a stellar reputation in the UK.
