I have been discussing food storage with a prepper friend of mine so this video is very timely. I personally am not a fan of the "Payday Prepper Haul" videos. All to often this type of video is just a brag about what the person bought for groceries today. This video was done in good taste and very informative. I liked the way you explained how much to store of any given food. Few big rules everyone must follow. 1. Don't store any food you do not eat now. 2. Always eat what you store as your daily diet and in this way you are rotating your foods. Always rotate everything in your pantry. I know some preppers who do not. they will pay for it later. 😁 3. Do not store food items just because someone recommended it. Again only store food that you and your family will eat. 4. If you do not cook from scratch then don't store food that must be added to a scratch cooked meals. Truth is most cooks today do not cook from scratch. Many don't know how. Others just don't want to take the time and effort to cook this way. Your pantry should reflect the foods you eat and the style you use to cook. 4. Store foods that can be cooked using your alternate cooking method. If using a wood fire to cook on will be very different that cooking on your electric range. Think one pot meals. 5. Test your pantry (as well as your other preps). Turn off the gas, the electric and the water on a Friday afternoon. Do not turn them back on until Monday morning. Put away your cell phones, unhook any landline, put away all the vehicle keys for this same period. Go 100% off grid. Test all your preps. Your cooking, your lighting, your transportation. Everything! Keep detailed notes of all the bad and all the good as the weekend develops. Monday night sit down with all the family, including the kids, and review all the notes. Discuss everything, the good and the bad. Don't forget to talk about the good and bad behavior of all family members (the first time you do this will cause some stress). Make improvements in everything, even the good. Doing this test often will make the real thing soooooo much easier and reduce so much stress.

Excellent comment!! Thank you for sharing 😊 I was just telling Tonette I hope that people are taking the time to review the comments section because it is just filled with a wealth of information. I completely agree about storing foods you enjoy and eat on a regular basis. Many of us do not store freeze dried foods we eat on a regular basis, but at least test them out and get a feel for them as well so that you know if you like them and what needs to be added to them to improve them.

I used to be against Christmas before Thanksgiving but with everything that went on, I changed my ideas on it a couple of years ago. Even when I wasn't happy about it,I would never give people trouble for celebrating the birth of Christ even all year! I have no problem with storing cereal for long times. Most are long-dated anyway. I have everything but the brown bread, including the Cracker Jacks. I have some bread-type items stored in mylar and need to check them again soon. I had a long-outdated taco kit box a few years ago and it was all in great shape, including the soft flour tortillas. I put some up myself and a month or so ago. I checked them 6 months out and they were perfectly fine. I laid in a lot of pasta of all shapes, but I tended toward more small, like pastina, achini di pepe and thin, like angel hair, so that cooking times would be faster if need be. I grabbed jarred sauce although I made my own, as I did with chili and soups. I ordered herbs and spices in bulk. They do last for years. If anyone thinks they can't have bouillon because the ones at the store are not gluten-free or contain MSG, I have ordered some free of both from Amazon. I will be looking forward to more of these, Leah. Great job.

@@PreppingbyFaith Alway nice to hear,Leah.I wonder if I put too much in sometimes. I need to avoid MSG, (I get dizzy) and Son#1 needs to go gluten-free. That is why I added buckwheat, millet and quinoa to my stores,(I like them myself), and along with regular commercial oats, some certified g-f ones, and some cetified g-f cornmeal. I think that everyone should, because you never know who God will put in your life that may need to eat gluten-free.

@@tonette6592 definitely not too much! You can never share too many ideas. And what it tells me is that you are very engaged in the conversation which is exactly what I want when I put these together. I don't want a dialogue by myself. I love the idea of putting some away for someone in your life who may have to eat GF. It's like my daughter who has to have lactose free dairy. A lot of us have food challenges we need to be mindful of.

@@PreppingbyFaith another reason to store baking soda is if you burn something in a pan, pour a generous amount of baking soda in it and put it back on the stove or back in the oven on high. Watch carefully because it will suds up. But after it heats the burned items will come right off. Usually you will see them start to float to the top of the water in the pan. No wasting tons of water trying to clean it off.

Like these topics so please keep it up. We label everything that goes into our pantry with exp/use-by dates as well as when the items are opened (DW worked in a nursing home so it was mandatory). Because we label newly purchased items we have noticed that some of them expire sooner than what we already have in the pantry so we have now started looking at the dates prior to buying.

Hey all, it's been brought to my attention that the 25 3/4 listed on the bag of pancake mix was water and not the total cups of mix which is 38 3/4 cups. So at 5 bags of this mix you would have nearly enough put up for twice a week for a family of 4 that uses 2 cups of mix each time. That's an even better deal if you ask me 😊

I have about 400 lbs of rice (plain old Walmart rice) my daughter n law is gluten free and I ended up grinding 100 lbs of the long grain rice into flour so she could use that for her baking of breads and dough, this can be used in place of regular flour just add your baking powers and such when preparing. So much cheaper than buying gluten free flour products. I used a small coffee grinder and my ninja blender to grind the rice. I also have several manual granders if I ever need to grind more and don’t have electricity. Just suggestion.

Hi PBF. Check out my comments for facts, but I don't think baking soda goes bad, just baking powder. Also, I think you were looking at the water used for the pancakes and not how many servings in the bag. You are doing a fantastic job whether you are sharing the Word, price comparisons or what to store for the future. Keep up the good work and may your subs all see the value in what you are taking many hours to bring to the table. God bless you and yours

I didn't mean it would go bad from the baking soda, just that it may degrade overtime and you would need to add a little additional. As far as the water, yes I did read that wrong. So with 5 bags you would have nearly enough pancake mix for a family of 4 for twice a week for a year. Thanks!

Oh, thats a great idea with the veggie stew can. Its 16$ on amazon right now, that doesnt seem like a bad price, do you know what they normally go for? I think I will pick up 2 cans. its got all the veggies in there!! I keep the same chicken broth both in those cardboard containers and cans of it for longer term. I cook my brown rice in broth instead of water, makes it tasty! also love cooking with those cream of chicken soups. I make stuffing, put chicken breasts on top and cover with that soup. bake until chicken is done, its amazing for a quick meal!! Any clue how long the broth in the cardboard container will last past its date? Thanks for the video, some great ideas in there!!

I think they were on sale for about $25 the last time, so $16 is an awesome deal!! You can't beat that price. I agree, cooking chicken stock in your rice makes it taste really good ☺️ In my experience, it will last about a year past the expiration date. Also, your meal with the chicken and stuffing sounds delicious 😋 very similar to what we do with pork chops and if you make mashed potatoes to serve with it, oh my! I heard you say your Mom PC some turkey on a different video but I see you have the keystone. Do you can or PC your foods? I also have a food saver and thankfully this has NEVER happened to me but on my pasta that I have saved up I do put in food saver bag and take almost all of the air out of the containers so no critters can make and ruin my stash with pantry moths. On the corn starch I thought my sister in law was crazy but I use to use it all the time I still have it and use it, but like things you are cooking with potatoes like potato soup I thicken it with the instant mashed taters and I love the taste that much more! Hi there, some people do put theirs in Mylar. Many I have stored just like what I shown in a sealed box on my cabinets. Others, I sealed with some packing tape so bugs couldn't get into them, dirt, or cooking oils and then put them into bins above my kitchen cabinets. Like I said, if you are keeping them in a rotation the printed date is good at least 2 years out. If you want some stored for a longer timeframe than 2 years, Mylar and a cool, dry, dark place is best. Also, remember that humidity affects food. I am in a very dry state so I have talked about how I can get away with certain things others have not been able to. Hope this helps ☺️
