I actually just purchased 2 of the Schmincke Horadam luxury wooden box set of their complete color range of 140 tubes, about 8 months ago. I kept one set in the tubes, and poured the other into full pans. I also have their entire 45 color range of the super granulating colors. As a professional artist and Bookbinder, they get used up rather quickly though... well, atleast the lighfast colors do. Schmincke is an amazing art supply company, and are a staple in my art studio and bindery. Along with all of their different mediums.... from their Airbrush acrylic ink line, soft pastels, acrylics, and the only other artists Gouache I'll used besides M graham, is Schmincke. Schmincke gouache is my absolute favorite, and must have. I cant say enough good things about schmincke, they are extremely reliable and consistent. You did an excellent job with this review mate. Have a great one

Thank you DJ for sharing your experience and thoughts. Schmincke is really reliable and I love the fact that they have a range of products for every artist. It makes their brand even more dependable. I also am looking at their gouche rigtht now especially the white. As I use white gouache for highlights. I currently use Holbein White gouache but i still would want to try Schmincke's. You have thoughts about it's opacity and quality?

Although I do believe schmincke to be a great all around performance paint it just isn't one of my favorites. Unless I'm in the mood to spend months layering a peice. I think that's where schmincke paints really shine, In layering. There just isn't any "personality" in the paints. Which is great when your goal is to replicate the classic masters. However, with so many modern makers whom add so much life and personality to their pigment grind is hard for me to pick schmincke over daniel smith. Because not only can I get vibrancy from less with less effort and no layering, but the way the pigments are milled gives each one a type of personality in and of themselves. Which makes me pick daniel smith almost every time over any other paint manufacturer. Followed by QOR when I'm feeling a little more modern / childish / abstract. White nights when wanting vibrancy without personality. Schmincke when I want flatness or that old world feeling or when I want to layer, layer, layer.

Even though I'd prefer a palette of colours, some from Talens Van Gogh others from their Rembrandt series, I'd still choose Schmincke just because they are not so intense and vibrandt when they dry out, like the Talens cours. It's all about personal preference. I'm a vintage/retro guy, I don't like flashy paintings, I like muted down coulrs,closer vintage look! Happy New Year!!

I like their watercolors and gouache the most. Some of these I don't like as much like the French Ultramarine. They dry down quite perfectly and most of them are easy to rewet. Turner's Yellow is also a yellow that I want to try it looks like a lovely soft warm yellow that is not on the orange end of the yellow spectrum. I have discovered Perylene Violet quite late in 2022 and I know a lot of people were talking about it how great it is but I would use it as a shadow color or for a moody color palette. I know that Lee Angold uses PV29 paired with PBk31 to create greys. Delft Blue is my favorite dark blue from Schmincke and I like to mix it with English Red or any other warm transparent PR101. They also have an Indigo but it's not that lightfast and I think that this mixture is a good replacement.

I love Schmincke and I'm glad that they're expanding their already huge range. The deep and moody colors you mentioned are few of my favorites. Perylene Green PBk31 and PB60 are both in 20color set. Mixing them is exciting as they're transparent and strong. Perylene Violet is really great on it's own but I've not tried mixing it yet with other colors. I might just try one of these days. Thanks for sharing. 🎨

Hello, Allan)) Love your videos, they are very thorough, thank you for the work you`re doing. I think you have a small typo there: Schmincke uses PY216 for their Turner`s yellow. I have the same pigment also from the White Nights range, they use it for their Naples yellow light and Naples orange. I think A Gallo also has that pigment somewhere in their range. I am in Europe and I love Schmincke))

Maybe your humidity levels and such are different in the Phillipines, Allan 🤔? The granulating colours I got dried down on my palette aren't gooey at all. If any they dry a bit harder than the non-granulating ones 😁 But then again our German temps are - I'm pretty sure a lot lower than yours usually wound be and the humidity is usually not so high and if it gets higher than usual, we have thunderstorms in the evening and the air is much less humid and colder afterwards. That said, what a wonderful test painting again. I hope you enjoyef the paints, I know they're kinda pricey overseas, so I'd probably go for other professional colours instead. They're pretty local hence cheaper than DS or Da Vinci to me and make a lot of my palette, but I'd probably chose one of the other heritage brands were I somewhere else than Germany or Central Europe ^^'

The humidity is always a factor.haha. but most are only goey coming out from tube. But all of them dried perfectly in pans. Personally these are my favourite, however I like Windsor and newton also and for a cheaper option I love the pure pigment set from mission. Personally I don't like Daniel Smith and won't buy them after learning they lied about their ingredients, particularly with the primatek range where they were caught using unlisted pigments to boost the mineral colours. I find this to be untrustworthy and deceptive of Daniel Smith and will never use them as a result. All they had to do was to be honest and list all the ingredients so at least we'd have a better understanding of their projected performance especially where lightfastness is a concern.
@AllanJayQuesada

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I understand and respect your side on the DS issue. While I agree that they should've just listed the real ingredients of their materials, I'm still using them now for the reason that I've really been used to their paints. I hope DS learned from this and that they'd still do something about it to regain the trust of many. I love many other paints brands and I love exploring more as well.

Hi there :) . The napkin test doesn't indicate if the paints are chalky but if the paints have enough gum Arabic in their mix in order to stick the pigment on the surface of the paper. If you do the same test on high quality gouache paints that are full of chalk you are going to see that the napkin will come out clear. It has nothing to do with chalk that is after all a pigment by itself. It has to do with the binder.
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 2 жыл бұрын
I agree and definitely get your point. That is why i also mentioned in the video that "it means, the paints adhere well on paper". This is the case for Kremer paints. They're richly pigmented, but many colors dont contain enough binders. They dont contain chalk, but they seem to be "chalky". Napkin gets dusts. By saying chalky, I meant, it seemed like chalk or it resembles chalk. It may appear confusing, but yes, i checked the dictionary 😄 it has 2 meanings, either rich in chalk or resembles chalk. And since many cheap paints contain lots of extenders (not limited to chalk) have been circulating, chalkiness had been associated to having that powdery and dusty finish. Again, chalkiness being only used to describe the paints to be like chalk, which is dusty, powdery and doesn't stick permanently on surface. If Id like to say that the paints contain chalk, i would just say "it's like gouache", but no, that was not what i wanted to prove. I wanted to just really show if the paints adhere well on paper or not, cause if they dont, theyre just like chalk which dont really stick permanently on surface. Im not very good on explaining but i also hope you get what I mean. 😊
@creativecolours2022
@creativecolours2022 2 жыл бұрын
@@AllanJayQuesada Ok I see now what you meant when you've said chalky. We've lost it in the translation. lol No offense meant. You can fix the chalky paints by mixing a bit of Gum Arabic into them. Even those that are in solid form, pans etc. Wet them in order to dissolve and then add the Gum Arabic. As for the Kremer ones. You are right ... some of them are not that well made. I prefer to buy raw pigment and make my own watercolors. It is easy and so much more affordable because with let's say 50 grams of raw pigment you can make loads of watercolour paint. I buy in raw pigment form the colours that I use most, Ultramarine, B. Sienna and such things and then I mixed them with Gum Arabic into watercolours. You should give it a try yourself to see how satisfying is to make your own watercolours. You can even make your own pigment by using different colours of soil because all the earth colours are actually soils. Processed but soils.
@justacatwhocantype
@justacatwhocantype 2 жыл бұрын
"Chalky" has, for whatever reason this may be, come to have several meanings in the art community here on youtube and probably elsewhere as well. Some people use "chalky" in the literal sense of the word, like you did, meaning that there is a notable chalk content in the paint, some peope use it to describe that a paint is very matt and kind of cakes onto the paper (like gouaches and many inexpensive watercolors do), and some people use it like Allan does, describing a paint that can be rubbed off the page after it has dried. I think this first started with the very cheap kind of watercolors that can indeed contain a bit of chalk (things like watercolor cakes) and then people just ended up using the term for other watercolors as well, regardless of actual chalk content, as long as they behave similarily in any way.

@@creativecolours2022 thank you. Yes, i get that advice too. Some also tip to add drops of honey or glycerine on the gum arabic for them to get moisture and minimize being powder like. But still thr gum arabic is the main thing to bind the pigments and let then stick on paper. Wow! You're making your own paints! I have also been collecting jars of pigments from Jackson's and Sennelier. I currently have 24. But i havent got the time and courage to start actually making the paints.haha. i have doubts if the preservative we have here are the right ones (clove oil) cause rhere are alot of types. There are food grades and there are scents and non food grade. Got no idea which one to choose. Do you have recommendations? The Philippines is so humid and pan paints easily get molds so I'm very particular to anti fungals and the likes. With regards to making my own pigments, that's a whole new level of skill for me to discover. Hahaha. Arent soils and stones filled with organic matters that might soon affect the paint behavior? How do you handle along the process? Plus the mulling and grinding is laborious. 😆
@creativecolours2022
@creativecolours2022 2 жыл бұрын
@@AllanJayQuesada A few drops of clove oil will prevent your paints to mold. But in the mix except Gum Arabic you have to add bee honey too that has anti fungal properties. And in case you make your own Gum Arabic solution then you'll have to add honey in the Gum Arabic too. But lets say that you start with a ready made one. The ratio between the pigment and the Gum Arabic is 1:1 for regular colour and 1 part of pigment and 2 of Gum Arabic for Earth pigments that have the tendency to absorb the gum arabic. Earth colours need more honey too and perhaps some drops of glycerin ( that you can buy from the pharmacies ) because they tend to dry rock hard. Mulling them is very easy. Use any hard and flat surface like a bath tile, or a thick glass, or a marble tile. You can mull them either with a muller that you should buy or with anything else that has a flat surface. The flat bottom of a bottle for instance. Or the underside of a spoon. I used to use the underside of a glass candlestick. Because it is flat, round and has a "handle" . Your paints are ready when you don't feel the pigment scratching under the muller or whatever you use when you mix them. Larger pigment particles give more granulating paints. If you grind them for longer the particles of the pigment become smaller and the paint gets more staining rather than granulating. The rest you are going to see them in practice if you make some paint a couple of times. But it is very easy. And it doesn't really worth to buy some colours. If you want any help contact me on my website's mail. Search for Marialena Sarris and you will find me.
