So in college, my buddies and I would ride around in my truck toward the end of the year when everyone was moving out and collect furniture people were throwing out. Lots of couches from rented houses, lots of bags of designer clothes from the foriegn student's apartment buildings, and a truly absurd number of mini fridges. We'd collect all of it, store it in our apartment while we went out separate ways for the summer (usually I stayed for the local construction jobs), and would resell it all to students and freshman when fall rolled around. We'd end up spending about 200 bucks in gas in the spring and walk away with 10,000 each (40k total) in the fall. Usually about 40% was from the fridges and 55% from the designer crap that got thrown away. Anything we couldn't sell after a month got donated to GoodWill, turned into Christmas Gifts, or turned into spare parts for our person projects. While the money was definitely a huge plus, we mostly did it because it was fun to find cool stuff, was a fun way to hang out, test our repairing skills (mechanical and sewing), and some of us even saw it as providing a valuable service to other students who couldn't afford perfect good stuff for full price.
