As a Taiwanese, I really think Taiwan can do much better in integrating foreigners and making them feel like home, I think the fact that some foreigners are not willing to give up their original citizenship is at least partially due to the fact that they still feel foreigner even after spending many many years in Taiwan

Taiwan is so beautiful with wonderful food, people and scenery. Yet more Americans tend to seek to stay in Japan instead. Why is that?

I am in Berlin now. Berlin now is not better off than Taiwan. It is not clean at all in some places are dirty. The public transportation in Taipei, particularly the subway is 100% better than Berlin.

Man, i swear he knows wayyy more about Taiwan than me. Though I was born Taiwanese, I'm only a 17, which makes the time he has spent in this island almost twice my age! In my opinion, he's definitely way more Taiwanese than my dumbass (obiviously).

Yes, well, he's certainly right about the visa office, that was a regular dread for me. And it was even worse in 1986/7. On a side note, the thing you usually do for citizenship is give up your original nationality then re-apply after acquiring Taiwan citizenship. In my case, the British office in Taiwan (whatever it's called now) actually called me to ask if I wanted to re-apply (I didn't).

you should know the visa problem in many other countries especially Asian people applying visa for visiting America and Europe in that age.
@taiwaninsider8919 Жыл бұрын
Yes, of course, but the reasons were different and the volume of people different too. 1989 was the first year more than half of Taiwan students who went to the United States to study returned within the year that their courses ended. Most were naturally suspected of wanting to find some way to remain, legal or illegal. By contrast only a relatively tiny number of Europeans or Americans would try to remain in Taiwan long-term but the government still actively discouraged any from doing so. Even years after I had married an ROC citizen I STILL had to get return tickets when applying for visas to Taiwan, to demonstrate that didn't intend to stay!

Many of us “oldies” have been here for decades. Some of us retired, disqualified from govt. pensions, and struggling because citizenship is out of reach. Returning “home” is absurd - all our family is dead, no roots, no attachment to our long-ago homes.

That’s not a proper question to ask someone who live in Taiwan for more than 30 years, what is like being a foreigner? I believe he still feel like outsiders in Taiwan all the time by his appearance, you don’t need to rub it in his face.

I'm always surprised when foreigners learn the language of the locals. I don't know if i can learn a totally new language fluently even if I lived for decades there... I'm not sure if I would pick it up...hmmm
Google AI: > to me it seems that people in taiwan are overall more friendly than in Germany < I agree with you. There are a few reasons why Taiwanese people might seem more friendly than Germans. cross check: > to me it seems that people in Germany are overall more friendly than in Taiwan. < That's an interesting observation. There are a few possible reasons why you might have this impression. Regarding food, I totally agree the average food in Taiwan is magnitudes better than in Germany, the variety is hugh. The price index in Germany is too high, many restaurants pick cheapest ingredients or add food from cans nowadays. The prices in Berlin went up like 75% within the last 10 years. I used to live in Berlin - some areas are beautiful but the city authorities and government are just too crazy - and in my eyes plundering their own citizens rather than offering proper support for the high taxes.
